  • Is there a way to get cheaper expansion pack membership (other than splitting costs on a family plan)?

  • +1

    Available on xbox now too.

  • I don't have a switch yet, so please excuse my noob question.

Is this how one would play golden eye on the switch? Like does Nintendo have a N64 pack that you can purchase online to then play N64 classics, including golden eye?

Or is the game a standalone/ will be a standalone.

    Cheers

It's part of the game app that you can download and play when you subscribe to Switch Online. The standard subscription gives you the NES and SNES apps, the expansion version gives you those and the N64 app. The app is basically like any other retro collection where you can jump in and out of retro games with save states.

    • +3

You'll need to buy a Switch and sign up to a Nintendo Switch Online subscription - This will give you access to NES and SNES games.

For N64 games, you need to purchase an additional subscription called the Expansion Pack membership

      • I’m new to Switch as well.

Is there such a thing as a free trial for the Expansion Pack?
I can see you can get a free trial of Switch Online but looks like you can only sign up to the Expansion Pack for 12 months?

        • +1

no free trials from what i have seen you pretty much get it or you don't you can just pay for a month if you like and if you like it then pay for a year. I did this at the start and paid yearly after.

Oh gods, the controls….. the controls. cries

I just tried to do the first level again, and it was not easy or intuitive to play with the default N64 mapping.

    • +2

      Use a N64 controller 😁

    • you most likely don't have a N64 controller the game was designed for a N64 controller if you don't have one then your simply not going to be able to play it.

      • True, but with minimal effort the button mapping on the Switch controller could be made customisable, so that you could actually do something with it rather than just going with whatever the default layout is.

Personally I'd use the LHS stick as the c-buttons, ZR & ZL both as the Z trigger, and the d-pad for movement with the RHS stick controlling the look function - but that's not possible.

I might have to try playing around with my 8-bit Do controller and creating a custom profile, but that seems like a lot of hassle.

I'm certainly not spending another $60 on a controller that I will use for a couple of games for novelty purposes only and then forget about.

        • for one I have played an hour of this game so far on the switch and I don't know what Nintendo did but it was 1 for 1 perfect to that of the original n64 version controller wise rumble and overall, no glitches like on emulators tested this on a real N64 and i think the switch implementation is better than original combined with an improved controller and the way the game runs. it's like playing on a N64 for real. N64 controller 2.0 that nintendo made is in perfect sync with goldeneye not noticing any lag in controls its very responsive as it was native. For the first time, I can say you can play goldeneye as well on the switch as you could on the N64. Also to your point 60 dollar controller is nothing compared to buying a real N64 console with the original controller to get the real experience of the game. People spend 100s on getting the full N64 experience and you're complaining about 60 bucks? lol people spend more than that on beer

Found this button mapping guide in comments on Nintendo’s instagram page. It actually makes the game playable now:
In game change your control style to 1.2 Solitare, then on the Home menu go to System Settings Controller and Sensors - Change Button Mapping, remap ZL to R and ZR to ZL, and on control stick settings switch the sticks. It makes it control like modern shooters. (You can remap B and A to L and R if you feel like it.) press B then click on Save as Preset Mapping and name it Whatever. Make sure it's loaded after.
In-game/app menus may be a little weird but you get used to them in a few minutes.
Before starting a multiplayer match, go to Control Style at the bottom of Multiplayer Options and make sure it's set to 1.2
Solitaire for you. It seems to default to 1.1.
Remember to click Reset in the change button mapping menu when you're done playing.

    o yes!!! :D

Shame no online MP for xbox :(

  • +1

Could not come to grips with the controls on this. Not surprised though.

      Try this, much better:
In game change your control style to 1.2 Solitare, then on the Home menu go to System Settings Controller and Sensors - Change Button Mapping, remap ZL to R and ZR to ZL, and on control stick settings switch the sticks. It makes it control like modern shooters. (You can remap B and A to L and R if you feel like it.) press B then click on Save as Preset Mapping and name it Whatever. Make sure it's loaded after.

Remember to click Reset in the change button mapping menu when you're done playing.

  • Have nintendo online membership but somehow can never access the n64 games. Any idea how to fix this?

    • +3

Need the expansion pack membership, not just base

      • But I can access nintendo games, except if that's covered by the base membership?

        • +3

NES and SNES are covered by the base membership. You need to upgrade to get N64.

    • it means you don't have the FULL membership including N64 and megadrive.
you need to signed up for that.

omg Nintendo have done an amazing job of running golden eye i have run many emulations of this and also played it on the real n64 and none have ever run good as the native N64 version. but on the switch with a N64 control it was like playing it on the N64 its not emulation is a 1 for 1 simulation of the game to run perfect. even the rumble on the n64 controller is spot on and in sync with the game.

THis is better than the original N64 version I can't believe it and it's on the SWITCH!! of all consoles. If its the same on the Xbox I will be very surprised. but Nintendo did a great job very responsive not glitches its like it was made for the switch.

    • +1

      Don't let PainToad see this!

      How dare you complement Nintendo!!

    • +1

+1 have tried many time to get this to run on various emulators, just performed poorly. Super happy this is out officially and working well, finally!

  • How are the graphics of the N64 games? Did all games get a remaster

    • +1

goldeneye is defiantly cleaner than the original they did improve it definitely looks better.

    • -1

It's emulated. They might be a bit sharper, but none are remastered.

  • +1

Got 2 thanks! Been waiting since May!

    • +1

      Got 2 Goldeneyes? Nice!

  • I’m the best Goldeneye 64 player in the world. I really can’t see anyone beating me.

  • +4

There's a free open source remaster on PC for those who don't know.

    Makes a great LAN night.

My bet Goldeneye hasn't aged well at all 😂

  • How much does the game cost on the Nintendo Switch Store?

    • Can't buy it

      • Oh? So you can only get the game with a premium subscription?

        • +1

          Correct.

[SUBS, Switch] GoldenEye 007 added to Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online (Expansion Pack Membership Required)

        • +1
