the vast majority of games back then are shit

          Not this one…

  • Pretty decent machine, they have some good updates. Whload and .adf support. They keep teasing new releases so will be interesting if they do a maxi version.
I must admit I only tried for 10 minutes. Lol. But have a 1200 with 060 so. Real thing always wins. But did get the vic 20 maxi and it’s good. I like the tank mouse on the mini.

  • I have one of these A500's. Playing Amiga games in conjunction with a genuine "The Joystick" compatible with "The A500" makes it my favourite mini retro console. The Amiga games generally do not suit using the included gamepad.

If you plan on retro gaming with a gamepad, I'd recommend the SNES mini.

Note: My A500 mini joystick looks identical to this, not sure why this box says C64 and Vic20 only:

The mighty Amiga is finally back to set the computing world ablaze once more. Soldier on!

    • +1

Yeah look at the creativity in the games back then relative to nowadays. I think some people have had enough churns of “Unreal Engine with some fancy surface pack“ games.

      • I agree but the indie scene has been strong for well over a decade, well since 2004's Cave Story. You can avoid the AAAs and get originality at the expense of high end graphics and polish. Though with the latest AAA games even polish isn't available for many of them.

If only they made a full-size version with a working keyboard like the c64 maxi…

Awesome kit… by using Aminimiga or Amiga Game Selector/AGS 1.5 or 1.6 google is your friend. it is an awesome way to experience the world of the Amiga at the lower end of the emulation costs. Yes you can use other solutions on other hardware Winuae or Mister or Pi (Pimiga by Chris Edwards is another awesome solution). these can vary in costs too.. or you can go real hardware for those with cash, add a pistorm or Vampire to it A500mini, yes there is no keyboard. I use a Pi keyboard and plug the controller and mouse into the additional ports of the Pi keyboard. yes it is not a real amiga but for those who that is not an option or dont want to use the expensive equipment to smash out some games this is a cheaper solution. I got mine from Retrokit who are great but are out of stock.

  • What would a 500 be worth now?

    • A 500 would be worth 500 :)
About $500 seems to be the going rate.

    • I’ll take it off your hands for $100 😄

Family had our own C64, had many games. The system had a few odd quirks (eg: the Joker side tape of Batman: The Caped Crusader would onmy load when the C64 was first turned and cool…. if I tried to play it after a few hours of gaming it just refused to load). Ghostbusters 2 was the worst game I had played (spent $25 of birthday money too).

Family inherited 2 Amiga 500s, first on our own. Second was donated by a family friend who moved on to pc games and all of his games, was a lot of fun!!

    • +1

What games did you like back then? I had the Amstrad, I really liked the original Ghostbusters, Green Beret, Turrican, Arkanoid, Head Over Heels, Turtles, Golden Axe, and Football Manager 2.

      • +1

        Lets not forget Robocop :)

        • +1

I didn't get to play it back then. I just quickly watched a YouTube clip and I reckon I would have liked that one. :(

I remember that I also liked Bomb Jack, Colony, Rockstar Ate My Hamster, and How to be a Complete Bastard.

          • +1

@FabMan: Who Dares Wins 2 was pretty ace

        • +1

          Lets not forget

          RoboCod :)

      • +2

Cannon Fodder 1 & 2, Batman 89, Test Drive 1 & 2, world Championship Boxing Manager, Panza Dragon Kickboxing, Leisure Suit Larry (parents didn't think I'd get through the trivia questions… but I'm a trivia nut, soooo lol). My dad had a rude game that was basically a porn version of Bomberman lol. Robocop was great, perfected it wayyyyy before I finished the arcade version.

        • Nice.

    Turrican II
    Speedball II
    Ghouls and Ghosts
    Lemmings II
    Supercars 2
    Super Offroad
    Test Drive II

    F I'm old! 🤣🤣🤣

    • +2

Speedball 2 was awesome. Omg Super Offroad too!

Check my comment above for Super Cars 2 java link :)

  • Zool = worst game ever. (Well maybe for a flagship mascot attempt in the Amiga days).

    • +2

Zool was alright. Giana Sisters was better though.

      • +1

Giana Sisters was probably the best clone of all time. Or one of them.

    • No way was it the worst game ever. It's just not good and overhyped at the time.

The fact it was given a remaster recently means some people thought the original was worth the effort and would make some money. The remaster made some improvements to the original, but I don't think I'll bother getting it, I'm not keen on the European style of collect a billion things that the French Ubisoft never got rid of in their modern AAA games.

      • +1

It was absolutely shocking. Kids in the playground who had Mario and Sonic as their gaming heros…..then we get Zool….
You're right - it was overhyped. But my disappointment continues to this day

        • +1

Hahaha, I can get that 30 year disappointment. I got the Mega Drive for the first Christmas it was released in the UK, so I got to be the Sonic kid taunting Zool kids. A mate kept banging on about Gods, how did that compare to Streets of Rage or Shinobi? Poorly, it sucked.

          • @FabMan: I've gone through dozens and dozens of consoles and gaming kit. Amstrad to XBOX series X and everything inbetween.
I had the A500 + A1200. At the time its rivals were mostly Megadrive and SNES.
At the risk of saying something unpopular, lets face it - the Amiga lagged behind. It was poor in comparison. Gods Vs Streets of Rage? Wow. Superfrog was another i disliked alot.
Dont get me wrong - i love the Amiga! I had them for years and years. I had hundreds of games. I played them for ages with my mates. But Vs the consoles it didnt cut the mustard. I knew it then and still know it now. (Yet i've made a purchase today….) :)

Just my personal views - hope not to offend anyone.

Some unsung heros - Nitro, Football Masters, Lotus, Pang, Paradroid 90, Premier Manager, USM - I may think of more.

            • @6000SUX: I played Lotus and I liked that, but I'm unfamiliar with the others. That same Amiga loving mate showed me Speedball 2, I thought that was absolutely fantastic. Glad it came to the Mega Drive.

              • +1

@FabMan: Speedball 2 felt very 'samey' for me. Each match felt like a clone. I didnt get that feeling with other footie games. I did dig the team names and the player pics though…

I promise i'll write something positive soon!

  • One of the few platforms to support 2-player Lemmings

    • +4

      … there's 2 player lemmings? lol

2 player marble madness with mouse controls as fun on the Amiga

    • Oh no!

      • Let's go!

  • Bring on SWOS, goal-scoring superstar heroes…

  • +4

Despite still having my original Amiga stashed away because I can't bear to part with it, I somehow completely missed the existence of the A500 Mini. I've now spent the last 24 hours falling deeper into an A500 Mini rabbit hole on YouTube and I'm $164.25 poorer. Thanks Ozbargain!

Do you want to sell your old Amiga?

  • While on fave games from back in the Amiga days…
    Wings

    I love Wings!

  • My favourites were F1GP and BattleChess. I remember being amazed by the graphics and playability of F1GP!!!

Unfortunately my A500 got thrown out in 1 of our moves, but I still have the original AmigaOS and aRexx books.

I wouldn't buy a replica unless it is full size.

I learnt to program on a C64, so might look into that or the Vic20 to regain some nostalgia.
