Review for the Ayaneo Pocket Air by Retro Game Corps

If you don't care about the AMOLED Screen and LTE, then IMO the AYN Odin 2 is a better purchase.

    • LTE…can I use this as a phone or is it like the Vita where it has a SIM slot but can't be used for anything but data?

bc tbh it's nowhere near replacing my beloved Xperia Play, but something like this, but able to make calls, is pretty sweet.

Given RRP in the US is $329 USD, which comes to about $550aud after GST, whilst this is a good deal comparative to other local sellers, I just can't see this being a compelling purchase at this price unless you must have a handheld with local warranty.

You have the Odin 2 which has far better performance from its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 but a worse screen (6" IPS that has a rep for being very average) that can be bought direct from Ayn for $321 USD, the Retroid 4 plus being $199USD (available from Aliexpress for around $400aud) with almost the same performance (Dimensity 1100 vs 1200), albeit a smaller, non-OLED screen (iPhone 6 spec IPS panel), or the RG556 being available for $300aud with admittedly worse performance but a similar spec OLED panel to the Aya Neo, all of which represent far more compelling value propositions than the Aya Neo.

It's a shame as if the Aya Neo Pocket Air was around $400-450 it'd be extremely compelling for those who want decent PS2/GC performance alongside a 5.5" (which in my opinion is ideal size) Oled.

Wow - is this really ~$540 more console than the Miyoos?

    • +2

Whilst I think this is expensive, not really comparable. If the games you want to play are only on consoles that this supports that the Miyoo Mini doesn't, such as PS2 or Gamecube, then it wouldn't really matter if it was 100x more expensive as you would never be cross-shopping them because the Miyoo Mini wouldn't play what you wanted to emulate.

can this play genshin impact at 4K 60 FPS?

    • -2

Pretty sure this is just an Android based emulator. Genshin only has controller support for ios and pc. So this would be a dud for genshin.

      • +1

err.. Android based emulator? This device runs Android natively, out of the box.

        • I think thats what he means, an emulator that runs on android.

          • +1

@Spendmore: To run Genshin Impact, which is native on Android on the device? That's what the original question was about.

        • A lot of people now refer to emulation devices as emulators, used to confuse me too but then I got used to it.

next gen is due April 2024

    • The Aya Neo next is a very different class of device, being an X86 handheld and also considerably larger.

  • Consider a look at the Anbernic RG556. ~A$300

You lose some luxuries and performance but it's half the price.
