$281 via Kogan eBay with code PLUSAVE

Official Australian stock per Kogan website
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/motorola-moto-g86-5g-128gb-spel…

    • That's not the 'Power' model
*edit - specs are the Power model, but not the title, so not sure…

      • +2

If you google G86, you can see most retailers have dropped their price to $297
Another way to compare is the RRP too

        • +2

$299 at JB Hi-Fi and that's on sale. The only advantage you get is over the counter stock and warranty. No having to ship an item back to a store some where. But i'm not sure if JB will price match against a coupon discounted price but unfortunately probably not. For what i can work out the current RRP is $499 for this smartphone.

          https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/moto-g86-power-5g-128gb-p…

          • @hollykryten: I thought regardlessly where you bought a phone it's shipped to authorized repairer for warranty claims

      • +1

I did a little research on that matter. What i found is that on the eBay page for Kogan it has the MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) as 840023297885 and that matches the MPN listed on the Mobileciti page. It's exactly the same model so there's no doubt about it. But personally i'd rather buy from Mobileciti but it's the buyers choice.

    • Thanks. eBay Plus required.

OCT12 gets it down to $273.68 for me

      • That wasn’t showing earlier in the morning. The code must have started at 10am today

      • +3

Real deal always in the comment section. LOL

      • That code isn't working for me

        • Try OCT10 for non eBay plus members

For those that do have this phone - what are the photos from this camera like?

Next year, I'll be heading to South America for about 3 months and am looking for an el cheapo phone to accompany me (along with my main phone, iPhone 15 pro). The idea is that I'll use the el cheapo when out and about to take photos etc (and that way not worry, if it does indeed get stolen).

    • +1

I have the older generation G85 and G75. The G75 is a much better phone compared to the G85. The G85 isn’t great for photos — not sure about the G86, though.

    • +1

Surprisingly good, holds up well to my partners S21 and definitely a huge improvement on my Nokia G52 I had before. Overall it's an excellent phone with a great screen and sd card is a huge plus.

      • hi mate,

Does it come with wall charger in the box?

        • +1

          No just a cable

    • +4

Buy a 2nd hand Sony RX100 camera either first or second gen should be decent price. Great travel camera.

Either that or if you want it to be a phone I would recommend getting an iPhone X, it shoots great photos despite the age of the device and I used one in aeroplane mode for 3yrs as my camera. I think it might even be better than my current phone as mine over processes the photos.

      • Fair call - I'll have to look more into it. I do have the Fuji x100vi but I'm also hesitant on bringing this due to being a bigger target (than I already would be - being a tourist).

If I can summon a second-hand Sony RX100 for not too expensive of a price, it may be the play as it'll be just as compact as a phone and take amazing photos. The downside is I wouldn't bring my iPhone to all outings and then have to rely on mates' phones for directions etc (or otherwise, just try to make it work).

However, as I write this, I think to myself it's maybe counter intuitive to buy a Sony RX100 if I already have a decent phone/camera (and if I'm not wanting to bring anything expensive, then it makes no sense to buy a RX100 unless it's cheap).

        Decisions, decisions

        • You want to be a consumerist. You want to spend money. You must help the economy.

        • +1

Sorry my advice for buying RX100 might not be so well placed, seems the first generations are hard to find now and people that are selling them are charging a fortune. I got my first gen brand new many years ago for $360 so I thought it would be around the $200-250 mark but people on eBay are asking like $500+ for the gen1 it's crazy.

I reckon hold off u til within 60 days of leaving, two reasons, potential for this phone to get cheaper over time, also can claim TRS and save yourself GST when claiming at the airport

      • +1

Expect a long queue for that TRS claim as they process slow these days, especially airports like SYD.. Last time, I gave up after waiting for 15-20mins as obviously I was getting late for my flight. even I started doubting if they are doing it on purpose so most people would walk away without claiming?!

        • +1

I'm leaving from Melbourne - so hopefully a smoother process, but yes I do agree with TRS and SYD. I travelled in August of this year - my flight was roughly at 11.30 - I rocked up to the airport at 8.30 (on the dot) and figured 3 hours is more than enough to get by security, TRS and chill in the lounge.

Instead, it took about 2.5 hours to get through security and customs - the line snaked from like the start of where you enter (for example next to Area C counters) to like Counter O or something. Absolute madness. In the end I did make it to the TRS and the lounge (only for like 7 mins lol, then had to leave) - but it was wild and inefficient. I reckon there were like 5-6 people who asked to move forward in the line because their plane was leaving and they had to claim TRS.

I assume it had to do with the works that was going on but I've only left from sydney a few times, so can't comment if that was the norm.

          • @eltito: Same and TRS cuts of 30min before departure so i had no chance. It is a Govt rort. Should be able to claim coming back in for these cases.

        • Hand in your OzB membership
          😅

In my case it was fine when I was flying out on an 11am flight. Lined up or 10mins

It all depends on the amount you are gonna get

      • Completely forgot about this, which is silly of me, because I'm holding out on getting the new AirPods Pro until I can claim the TRS - so thank you for the reminder!

      • The price already does not qualify for minimum amount for TRS.

        • Yeah I had to buy a usbc to aux adapter to get past the threshold. Doesn’t have to be $300 on one product, just from the store

    • +1

The Pixel 7 is cheaper than this at $249 and a former flagship so I person would go with that if camera is your priority in this price range. Just keep in mind it's an older model with only 2 years of updates left.

  • +1

Bugger, just paid more than that for the G56 and still setting it up :)

    • +4

Setting up to view this deal on your phone….ouch lol

    • Me too, waited a month and a half and decided to buy it 2 days ago to take on a holiday… knew it’d drop in price as soon as I purshased the g56

      • Just realised this is only 128gb and the G56 is 256gb, so satisfying myself that I'd rather have the space than care about the detriments.

  • +2

"Motorola G86 Power 5G: $499 Fantastic value and almost class-leading everything

The surprise for me – it’s the first MediaTek SoC phone with good phone reception. Until now, that has been a hallmark of Qualcomm-based phones."

    https://cybershack.com.au/phones/motorola-g86-power-5g-499-f…

Hmm, interesting. I only consider Snapdragons for that reason. Time for a rethink.

    • +3

mediatek are doing great things and great pricing on their SOCs, might be why more phones are using them, only downside is if you are look at custom roms then snapdragon seem to have better support, but for people that just want a phone to use mediatek are great value. I have a moto 50g fusion and they seem to be great value for money and updates.

      • It's an excellent review by the way. Maybe some of you asking questions about the phone could read it.

      • Hoping for a decent SD phone around this price mark. All my phone's are rooted

  • +1

Just got one, thanks! Excited to not have to carry a power bank in my bag every time I leave the house

  • bought!

  • How's the camera? Buying for old folks. Ta

Edit - 2 years OS updates.

    • Looking to buy for parents also….they don't care about gaming or custom roms etc, just a phone to make calls, text, whatsapp and take some photos here and there. Any reason I shouldn't buy this?

      • +3

Could be cheaper in near future? LOL

      • +2

There's cheaper phones that would fulfil those requirements

    • +1

Budget phones usually have poor quality cameras.

    • The Pixel 7 is cheaper than this at $249 and a former flagship so I person would go with that if camera is your priority in this price range. Just keep in mind it's an older model with only 2 years of updates left.

  • 299 pixel 7 from bigw is better buy?

    • +3

I think this is better, bigger display

      • +1

And much newer with long battery life

      • +9

Bigger display is a downside for some (me). Why all the screens so big!?

        • Unihertz is the answer

          • @BargainCowboy: Can someone please confirm anecdotally that the unihertz jelly max will work with aldimobile/Telstra wholesale network?

I messaged aldimobile and they said "check to see it had the correct band support" but I know what a fact that doesn't matter as my Poco x3 NFC has the correct band support (and volte) but no longer works after 3g shutdown…

    • $249 Delivered @ Telstra

  • Is 128gb enough these days even with an SD card slot?

    • yes 128gb is still enough for a burner phone these days

      • +2

Why would this be a burner it's almost 300 bucks?

        • cuz non burner phones are 1k+

  • +2

Motorola cameras are usually pretty damn shite. If you even half care about photo quality, I think you'll be disappointed.

  • +1

Could this be the beginning of the price war that will eventually push the price down to under $250?

  • +3

I have this phone. With heavy use I easy get a day and a half. In terms of speed etc comparable with my old s23. Can't comment on photo quality as I don't use the camera often

  • In terms of speed etc comparable with my old s23.

That's pretty good, it matches a recent flagship

  • I bought one recently and love it, camera is a huge improvement on my Nokia g52 and couldn't be happier overall. For the price it is an amazing deal. I really hated the Nokia G52's reception and although I haven't tested it that much it did seem to hold up much better on a recent Brisbane -> Armidale journey where the G52 used to struggle.

  • Awesome, was waiting for this to go below $400, this is even better. My G82 battery is dying and the charge port is dodgy, time for it to be put out of its misery.

    • How long have you had the g82?

      • +1

A bit over 3 years… I raw dog it without a screen protector and the crappy case it came with. I work in a dusty environment and every hole on the thing is clogged - except the charge port which I have to constantly clean.

  • How is this compared to the Galaxy A36 deal you posted a couple of weeks ago OP?

    • +4

Better processor performance, more RAM (A36 has 6GB), higher resolution screen and no microSD A36

    • Moto is marginally better compared to A36 in this price range, however the only concern for me is the Android updates. Samsung gets updates till 2031 compared to one year for G86 (might go another year till Android 17 based on history)

      • Do the updates change your experience or improve your life? It's kinda a non issue for cheap phones, you don't need to keep them for 5 years as they only cost a few hundred dollars new.

  • +2

Quick google search suggests the Moto G86 will get maximum one more android update ie. Android 16 ? This compared to Samsung getting updates till 2031. I would rather wait for a sale on a Samsung mid-tier with a similar spec (eg. A56) for this reason.

  • Is this the best phone with microsd storage?

    • +1

It's why I bought it, like to have all my music with me

      • Why not Spotify or Apple Music? Not judging, just curious

        • +6

          No monthly fees with MicroSD

          • +2

@KirKoloft: Lol, answered right to the point.

Plus you can still listen to your music when no internet.

  • +1

The Motorola Moto G86 Power 5G update policy is one major OS upgrade and three years of bi-monthly security updates for most regions, though EU/EMEA models may receive two major OS upgrades. It ships with Android 15 and is expected to be upgraded to Android 16. This update policy is considered limited compared to some other devices in the market, particularly for budget phones.

    • +2

Motorola website is showing 4 years of security updates

  • how it is compared to Pixel 7 on similar price on Telstra website?

  • +3

I would go with pixel 7, for better camera.

    • +3

Sadly no microsd slot in Pixel phones.

      • +1

        Yes this is very disappointing

  • is it possible to price beat with officeworks? do they typically beat prices discounted with promo code?

    • They don’t price match with discount codes!!

  • Does this phone support VoWifi in Australia ?

  • +1

pixel 7 for 200 ill bite, maybe black friday

    • Yeah for 256gb due to no SD card 😁

    • It's $249 now, the Telstra deal has been confirmed to be unlocked by people that received it.

  • Bought it because I'm going on a multi-day hike early next year and the battery life will be very useful.

    • Battery banks are pretty cheap, you might already have one. For a once off hike, I wouldn't use that as a primary reason. That being said, 2 day battery life is cool!

      • Yeah, I have a 3 year-old Moto G82 that no longer gets software updates, so I'd been starting to look. The G86 ticked the boxes at the right price.

        • I would just take a 10,000mah powerbank or two rather than relying on the phone if you are hiking.
You can also charge your camera/action cam with the powerbank.
