But why do you want a Telstra account? Just buy the phone.

    • -1

its a little bit pixelated for me.

    • But its just a 2-3 years old phone?

      • You can run latest Android, with iodeOS and GrapheneOS on this, with a relocked bootloader.

        • @whyisave need oem unlocked for that not to be confused with carrier unlocked most carrier locked will also be oem locked

    • +14

that's not true, a quick search shows it's getting Android OS updates until 2027 on top of the security updates.

      • +6

Yep agree. While the Pixel 7 was originally only to receive 3 years of OS updates, Google later increased this to a full five years of security and OS updates. This means the Pixel 7 will receive updates up to 2027/Android 18.

      • +1

I wonder do people still use phones past the update period?

        • +5

          Yes

        • +7

Yes. To the vast majority of consumers, phone updates mean very little. Some that are aware of them see them as more of an annoyance than a positive change (Apple's battery capacity reducing updates didn't help on that front). For others, they're not even aware updates are available. I'm sure you've seen people with hundreds of unread notifications on them. An update notification is just another thing to ignore.

        • Of course.
I, only look for old phones to use, and re-purpose them.

        • I literally couldn't give a shit less if I get updates or not. By the time any important app becomes fully incompatible, odds are your phone is so long in the tooth that you're gonna get a new one anyway.

    Says locked to telstra

    • How to get it unlocked?

      • +8

        Contact them.

"If your service has been active for over two years, we don’t charge an unlocking fee, but if your service has been active for less than two years, we charge:

$80 for devices that have never been activated, or active for six months or less
$25 for devices activated for six months to two years."

        • So, $329 for this phone outright. Thats still a pretty good deal!

    • +1

I was surprised to find out that Telstra still locks their phones — I thought phone locking was a thing of the past.
Buyers, take caution: if you're buying a Pixel phone from Telstra, be aware that it may be locked and you might not be able to unlock it.
According to a Reddit user, Telstra unable to unlock Google Pixel handset from their network

      • Only prepaid kits are locked

        • Right but this isn't your standard prepaid phone, this is a former flagship.

In no circumstances should Apple iPhones (excluding 16e, SE), Samsung Galaxy S Series (excluding FE), or Google Pixel (excluding A Series) ever be locked.

        • Hey OP, just checking—this prepaid phone you listed, isn’t it locked to the network? I saw a Reddit user mention they couldn’t unlock their Pixel phone from Telstra even after paying the service fee. Can this one be unlocked?

      • Most phones are unlocked, but there are specific pre-paid ones that aren't.

    • Maybe Boost SIMs will work as well

lol so no one on this site uses a proper Telstra plan??

    • nope. it is 39 for 6 month

      • What's that one? I'm a bad Ozbargainer as I've put up with the slowly increasing plan cost and should really do something about it. I moved my son to Boost but there are reasons for me to stay on Telstra.

        • Only good for parking your number as there's not much data included

Can someone confirm if its possible to install grapheneOS while telstra locked?

    • +1

Network locking happens at a hardware level. You will be able to change the OS but still be unlocked.

      • +1

@Oh Daddy I assume you meant to say if I install grapheneos with the lock, it will still be locked right?
Then it's not too bad I can use boost prepaid or something for 6 months and unlock it for 25$.
        Thanks for the info.

        • +1

Yes, my typo. It will still be locked. You can try the self unlocking, someone posted the link above.

      • Erm well i had an old huawei and my friend did tricks on it and unlocked it lol

    • You can also install iodeOS too.

  • +2

I have never seen a Pixel phone that is locked to a specific network. Can someone please confirm this?

  • tried to purchase on two different browsers but keep getting a 'something went wrong' error, does this happen to anyone else?

    • Same error.

    • Means your credit card is rejecting, cycle a few different ones until 1 works.

Does anyone know if it works with overseas mobile carriers? Or is it locked to them as well?

    • Its locked to Telstra, means only works on telstra network.

I wonder if you can use a travel e-sim when overseas while having a Telstra sim card installed in this phone

What about this as a plan for it: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/off… $39 prepaid casual 6m plan

    • Oh wow, so at $78 that would make it cheapest annual plan no? Seems perfect for people like my mother who don't use any data, only calls.

  • +1

TIL network locks are still a thing

  • Dad is with Woolworths Mobile, which is through Telstra. Will this phone work, or will I still need to unlock it?

    • -1

It uses Telstra so it will work.

    • +3

only with boost confirmed with customer care

    • +1

Likely only Boost. VMNO's like Woolworths won't be so lucky.

  • Do locks work on esim?

  • +2

Has anyone actually bought one and confirmed that it is locked to Telstra? I was under the (possibly outdated) impression that network locking wasn't a thing with the Pixel line in Aus. It might just be a standard term for all (non-i)phones listed in their pre-paid section.

  • +2

I wish this wasn’t locked to Telstra. Only Optus works best in our area, very strange I know.

    • +1

      Same.

  • Is the bootloader locked on these?

  • How long will this phone continue to get updates and security updates for?

    • It came out roughly 3 years ago and was said to get updates for 5 years, so 2 more years of updates at least.

  • I was about to buy the Samsung Galaxy A36 deal.
    Pixel 7 or A36?

    • Same for me

  • Does it work with more telecom sim?

  • Hi OP,
so if I get this Google Pixel 7,… and leave it for 6 months, didn't use any sim card on it, can I unlocked it for $25 ?
or do I need to have an active Telstra/Belong/Aldi etc on it during the 6 months period?

  • Wow..had no idea they still made network locked phones.

    • They don't "make" them…they lock down the IMEI to the network.

All those cheap phones you find in Coles or Woolworths, are also locked, eg. Vodafone, etc.

  • +4

Seriously, it's 2025 and they still selling network locked phones - and it was a flagship one as well. I would give this deal a plus if the phone wasn't locked.

  • Can anyone confirm if this will work on the Woolworths mobile? I understand Woolworths mobile uses the Telstra network.

  • -1

Can you use network locked phones overseas on a local SIM of that country?

    • No, that’s why it’s called locked.

  • +1

What does that term 'If your service has been active for over two years, we don’t charge an unlocking fee' means. I have a telstra account older than two years with boost mobile. Will I eligible to unlock it for no fee?
