Commbank World Debit Mastercard - How to Get It?

Following on from a forum a few months ago discussing travel insurance, I was looking at getting the above card for the travel insurance. Primarily for Aus based cruising which they do actually cover. (Really just for the remote chance of needing medical TBH.)

I've searched the Commbank site, googled, can't find how to apply for this card.

I don't really want to waste hours going to a branch if I can do it online.

For anyone that has one of these cards - how did you get it?

    • You're saying it's invite only?

That's the way it was marketed when I got the offer.

  • Really just for the remote chance of needing medical

Do you have Medicare? If so, you’ll be covered across all of Australia.

    • Correct. If you're docked. Not sure if you've ever cruised, but you aren't covered when you're offshore. Yeah remote chance, but it has happened to people I know and the bill was a lot.

Oh whoops I missed the word “cruising”! Sorry.

I saw the word cruising and pictured OP in his VT Commodore doing mainies up and down Lygon St Carlton.

          • @Muzeeb: Hahha exactly! I must have read it and thought road cruising too.

I was invited and got it in 2019. Been a CommBank customer since birth (in my early 30's now). Mortgage was with ING but had about $100k in CBA accounts, no credit cards or other CBA products at the time either so really not sure why or how I got it.

It’s the $100k that got you the invite.

      • I would suspect so. I guess OP can transfer $100k to Commbank and leave it there for a bit until they get an invite. Maybe I’ll try doing that.

Good that we now know there’s a rough amount for eligibility.

      • not sure why or how I got it.

        That answers the why.

The how is probably because they accepted the invitational offer.

        Mystery solved.

I have been with CommBank since 2004 and have had over $100K in CBA accounts for years and never got the invite. 😣

      • That's why I'm surprised I got it. I know people who have a significant amount of money in CBA and mortgages/other products but also didn't get it. So again, really no idea why I was invited.

I got this around then as well, been with commonwealth from the start. However I’m broke 😂

    • Got the invite too but at the time my account was only 3-4 years old. Seems like it's based on how much you have in the account.

Look through the PDS of the included insurance for the NAB Platinum Debit card - it costs $10/month but still cheap for the included insurance. Anyone can apply for it

    • I've just had a look and unfortunately it's a very poor version of what the CBA card offers. The best thing about the CBA insurance that differs from almost all other card travel insurances is that you don't have to use the card to buy whatever you're insuring. You just advise them of the trip. So in this case I've paid for the cruise on my Amex card and could get insurance with the CBA insurance, but the NAB insurance no go.

I also don't think the NAB policy covers domestic cruising (in a car or on the water :) )

  • The standard CBA CC travel insurance policy (platinum, gold CC) says

    'Cruising in Australian waters

Cover is included under Overseas Medical, Benefit 2: Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses if you are travelling on a domestic cruise in Australian waters and the cardholder has activated their Overseas Travel Policy. For a domestic cruise, not part of an international journey, please choose ‘Pacific’ as your destination during activation.

Please note: There is no cover for claims arising from, or related to, COVID-19 whilst travelling on a cruise.

    • Yes that's right. That's why I wanted it. The NAB policy doesn't have this.

      • But you dont need the world debit mastercard. Just pick up a gold credit card or one of the other cards

  • Not my department but I was under the impression it was invite only as it was a pilot program for it as a new product at the time.

Another assumption (take it with a grain of salt) that the current Ultimate Awards credit card was based off of the CBA World product.

Have you checked the UA card insurance options?

  • My friend who was absolutely broke, under 1k in CommBank account was invited to get this. She was balls deep in debt.

  • I have a good relevant story!

in 2016 i was on a gap year from university (age 25), i was working as a bartender in Mosman, on my lunch break i decided to walk to a CBA branch to open another debit card account, so i could manage my money better, i already had 2 or 3 bank accounts with CBA north ryde, each with corresponding debit mastercards.

fastforward a couple years to 2019, CBA "randomly" selected my mosman branch account to be part of the world debit mastercard trial. i've used it for 4 years, love it, until unfortunately they started charging $10 per month in december, so now im debating whether to keep it. travlled a lot in 2023, but planning little to no international travel in 2024/2025.

Makes you wonder if the banks assess customers based on demongraphic wealth in the area of the branch at which your account was opened!

"Randomly" - picks Mosman. Sure, CBA - sure.

For $10 per month (free with cashback) NAB's Platinum Debit card is available to all.

      • my thoughts exactly

  • CC Neo is better than the World debit card,
I was in this pilot program for more than 2 years and they started charging AUD12 for using the card starting in December 2023, so I quit and now I'm on CC neo, they both have similar features and the same monthly fee but now neo is AUD15 probably its same with World debit card.
