    I shouldn’t laugh but ….

It’s not your van, you can’t just decide to put together a 2 bob job.

Yup, minimum $2.5k to fix it with beating, bog and paint.

Depending on the shop, $39xx doesn’t sound too far fetched either. An insurance job would be to replace to as new. It’s a lot of work to fix the panel behind the door to condition. The door is easy, buy new and paint.

Edit: I got quoted $1400 just to replace and paint a front bumper. Another 20min removal job.

  • -1

    “A lot”

  • $4,200 for an 'average' job.

    $3,900 for cash…

  • I can see why the OP was a mechanic

  • +6

Thanks for the absolute knee slapping laugh OP.

    Food for thought though:
Don’t get mad when you make ignorant and arrogant comments and get put in your place.

$19 is cheap compared to what you got slugged, always pay for insurance…

And finally as already pointed out… please learn where the $ goes when talking monetary figures.

  • Comments goes to show why they haven't made car panels out of recyclable plastic, paint and mount (like Smart ForTwo). Guess there is a whole lot of jobs dependent on it.

Situation sucks, might as well just pay the excess, save yourself the trouble and next time pay for excess reduction or buy excess insurance from a third party (you pay the $2k then claim from the insurance provider)

feel free to disrupt the industry

      • Just shows how little you actually know.

    • Comments goes to show why they haven't made car panels out of recyclable plastic, paint and mount (like Smart ForTwo).

      So someone has done that.

Actually my car has plastic front guards.

    • Yes, the excellent quality of the smart fortwo is world renowned. Having seen them after a crash, I'll give them a hard pass.

      • Maybe they performed as expected. Fifth gear in the UK crashed one into a concrete barrier and obviously had a different opinion to you.

        fifth gear test

        • I've seen them crashed in real life. It didn't end well for the guy driving it.

          • @brendanm: I think you always have a problem of understanding. Statistics is one thing. If you published your "didn't end well" clip on Youtube wonder if it would get more views and have more credibility than Fifth gear.

That aside and back to the point.

Body panels only have a minor contribution to safety of the vehicle (with a few small exceptions). So whether it is metal, plastic or fiberglass it doesn't matter.

            • @netjock:

I think you always have a problem of understanding

What, because I use real life, and physics rather than a YouTube video?

Body panels only have a minor contribution to safety of the vehicle (with a few small exceptions). So whether it is metal, plastic or fiberglass it doesn't matter.

Tiny car, very short, gets hit. Occupants die. If I'm getting hit by a truck, I sure as hell don't want to be in a fortwo.

              • @brendanm: You are always here to argue.

physics rather than a YouTube video?

Explains you haven't watched the youtube video.

Lets see ANCAP testing (much more credibility than you):

                Smart Fortwo 2009 scored 27.83 / 37, 4 star
                Toyota Corolla 2007-10 scored 28.85 / 37, 4 star
                Honda Civic 2007-12 scored 29.71/37, 4 star

So this dreadfulness is probably just down to you.

If I'm getting hit by a truck, I sure as hell don't want to be in a fortwo

Statistics of this happening? That is exactly my point. You actually have no idea about statistics.

Your rubbish might pass the pub test after 5 full strength beers but not before.

                • @netjock: You go for it then, buy your smart fortwo. Just remember that the laws of physics apply to it 👍

              • @brendanm:

If I'm getting hit by a truck, I sure as hell don't want to be in a fortwo.

considering the weight/force differential, being in any 'car' against a truck is a losing battle. The mass/size difference between a fortwo and a full sized sedan is a rounding error in that equation.
Its purely engineering design (crumple zones, material design etc etc) at that point which would be the/any deciding factor.

                • @SBOB: How much of a crumple zone do you get in a car 3 foot long? They are fine for a city car (apart from being an unreliable and expensive to fix pos), but for something on a highway, no thanks.

  • will you still use goget or will they be losing one of their most loyal customers?

  • I owned the same model of van once and had similar damage repaired - it was over $5k about 5 years ago. From memory they didn’t fix the sliding door, the skin had to be replaced (keeping the original glass, lock, interior trim etc) and the underside step of the door was somehow repaired (your pic also shows damage to the step), the rear quarter panel was banged out and bogged.

  • goget won't fix the damage. Smash quote costs just go towards reducing residual value.

If you feel its genuinely overpriced, pay out of your pocket for an independent insurance assessor to go over the quote and images. You're probably up for 200 bucks or so.

If you're still not happy, get an onsite assessment. You will be liable for hire charges while its being assessed.

Once thats all done and the assessors have shaved off a few hundred bucks, pay your excess as well as the assessors costs and move on with your life because you won't win. They do this for a living.

      just 100-200$ for the paints

P.S. Pay the excess, don't try to game the system when you entered into a legally binding contract. It will cost more for you to try to fix it

I can feel your pain, my friend! It ruins the day. I had a similar incident. The van I rented was parked in a very tight car space. I hit a concrete wall when i was turning left. It was very narrow space. Below was repair cost details from car rental company.

    Repair Cost Details:

Lowest quoted repair cost: $1582.00 (see attached)
Owner loss-of-use payment ($25/day) to contribute to loss of use costs for owner: $25 * 4 = $100.00
Contribution towards Owner’s cost of transporting vehicle to/from repairer: $50.00
Damage handling fee (to cover administrative costs): $60.00
Total Cost (repair and fees): $1792.00

  • This will cost more than $2500 to fix, so just pay it.

Next time you rent a vehicle you can get third party rental excess insurance which covers that $2500 excess for you. Usually a lot cheaper, sometimes even free with your credit card.

Otherwise just pay that extra fee they always ask for to reduce the excess.

    • which credit card? :O

      • i think the ANZ Travel Adventures card covers rental vehicle excess anywhere in Aus and overseas

      • Westpac black as well

  • OP could've bought a secondhand car for the price they're about to pay to have it repaired.

  • I can't quite see properly but it looks like you might have damaged the sill under the door. If so, it is going to be really expensive to fix. I would be paying the excess not out of pocket.

  • +1

    Buff it out bruh

  • Front panel - $3k in Dent removal and paint
New side door - $1k if painted already
    Rear panel - $1k paint

You can use the money you saved on not getting the insurance towards the cost.

  • +2

Mate, I had to pay $3000 excess to Flexicar for a at-fault accident but it was still cheaper than the bill for 3 car repairs so I happily paid it.

But in your case, unethically, I'd just return it, don't mention anything and if the next guy doesn't complain, nothing happens. I've seen, booked and driven goget and popcar vans in worse condition than that pic and idgaf. Took the photos before and after to cover myself and move on. These cars are known to be used and abused

  • Dont you just pay the excess and be done with it? Highly doubt they will give you any of the $2000 back with that sort of damage.

  • I havent used goget, but dont their cars just sit at random places with no monitoring? How do they know the damage was done by you?

    • +2

You take photos before you drive it and again when you return it.

      • +1

could technically photoshop the after photo, certainly unethical but hmm….

        • Unethical? More like illegal and punishable by law!
Please never think of something like that. The next person that rents it will also take photos before they drive it off. They’re gonna know!

          • @Ridiculous Panda: Not necessarily they could claim the damage happened after they returned the car. It all depends on OP's conscience.

            • @bettina44: Hard to explain how that sort of damage could occur on the kerbside of the parked van?

              • @kiitos: If it goes to court onus is on goget to prove he did the damage. If they find this ozbargain post then that settles it! If not then he'll probably get away with it. And to be honest, if he caused a ruckus to goget saying he didn't do it, this damage happened after he returned it, they'd probably let him get away with it.

The real question is really what sort of conscience he has.

  • -4

that van doesn't look like its worth $2k…. but yeah you are paying whatever the excess agreement was.

    • +1

Unless this opinion is coming from your years of experience in crash repair, it means exactly squat all.

  • +1

Rent it for a few additional days. Do DIY fix. Will cost you three fiddy approx. Then return after the primer has dried.

  • +3

You should have returned it and then booked it again with insurance. Wait a few hours and then report the damage as having occurred on the 2nd booking. It will be fraud but you'd save $$$

  • Crash repair industry has changed alot over the last couple decades, many won't even work on your car if its not a insurance job because they know they can charge a far higher amount to the insurance company then you would be willing to pay.

Either way with the above, you would be looking at $4000 minimum possibly upwards of $6000.

To give an example of myself, got a deep scratch about 30cm long on my right side rear fender on our car and the quote from 3 seperate shops was between $1300 and $1600 as they would have to repair and repaint not just the damaged panel but blend it into the boot and the rear door.

Long story short, I strongly recommend purchasing insurance on any vehicle you would rather not have to scrap or pay someone else for.

(Not a panel beater or crash repairer, have insurance on our car just didnt want to lose my no claims bonus)

  • +1

I thought all go get vans end up like that? The ones I've hired have been similarly f#$&ed up.. I assume they will bend you over and then put that van back into service without a thought to repair, at least in the interim. Tough lesson.

  • +2

Sounds like you need to goget a loan. Jokes aside, just pay the $2000 excess.

  • this has to the the funniest post so far in 2023 on this forum

  • I fix for tree tiddy

  • Hired two goget vans in the last few months. Both had significantly worse damage than that, so I think you're probably alright and they'll just keep hiring it out anyway.

    • Whether they repair it or not immediately (or ever) is not OPs concern. Irrelevant actually.

  • +4

OP said they were a mechanic a decade ago for a few months 😂

    It'sgoldJerry.GOLD.gif

  • I don’t know if it’s been mentioned but you need to consider loss of income for GoGet whilst the vehicle is being repaired as well.

  • You should have fixed it yourself, you seem to know it all.

  • Trust me, pay the excess and be done with it. There is no cheaper way out.

If you mess them around, they may even add costs like legal and loss of income.

  • +2

Well with all the money you're saving getting it repaired so cheaply maybe you can invest in some driving lessons?

  • They won't repair it. But they will keep your monies as per the contract with them. Why would they repair it and take it off the road??
    It's only cosmetic.

They will run into the ground then sell it off or write it off.

But non of your concern. Either pay up or lawyer up…(and lose??)

  • Always get the insurance with GoGet. $2 per hour or $20 per day and your excess is $300. Otherwise the standard excess is $2000.

  • That looks like every Goget van I have rented. If the door opens and closes, just return it.

    • +3

… and pay the damage fee.

  • Way more than 2.5k. A 1cm scratch on my car got quoted at 800+ by 3 different panel beaters before I decided to just live with it.

Since it’s a rental car your options are:
Pay the excess and move on
Ask for a quote for the repair from the company you rented from then pay the excess and move on
Pay the excess then lodge a claim with your credit card company if you are covered for hire car excess.

  • Pooped a car, bra!

  • Find a mate who is a panel beater so he can help in replacing/fixing the dents, make sure his wife has a cricut for the decals.

  • Based on one photo, I'd say $4k min, average of $4500.

Based on quotes for damage to various fleet vans over the years.

Edit: If you think insurance jobs are bad, try restoring a classic car. I've been quoted near $30k at some places.

  • ~$5k

  • $2000 excess doesn't even sound that bad. That is what my excess would have been for my $10k car when I was on my P's.

When i rent a car, the excess can be 4-5k but I always get insurance

  • Someone linked that you get insurance with the hire van.

2k excess isn't bad, go through them.

But if you went to someone, I would easily say 4k plus

  • OP please try to fix this yourself and then bring it to Go Get and let us know soon.

  • If you know the right person and don't mind getting an average job instead of a perfect job, that could cost as little as 2k to repair from my experience. But I basically get mates rates I should point out…

  • I hope OP has grown from this experience. AITA: yes.
