How Much Is an 8m2 Shed Worth (Scrap Metal) ?

A neighbour wants to dispose of their run down metal shed. Council won't take it as part of clean up saying it's building material. So they are going to pay $330 to their gardener to take it to the tip.

I suggested they could get it taken away for free or even get paid something for it.

What would scrap metal merchants pay for it, if they have to pick it up?

Free maybe - depends if it’s ready to grab and go and if it’s contaminated …don’t think they would be getting cash their way

  • If it’s a 3x3 shed and it’s disassembled you could take the panels in a Ute to a scrap metal and they would let you dump it for free or what ever it’s scrap value is, which is not much. I’d stay out of it and let the gardener do it. Unless you want to do it. Ring a scrap recycler and ask the question.

So they are going to pay $330 to their gardener to take it to the tip.

    What?

List it on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace for free at the very least.

At the very worst, go for a walk along the street and knock on the door of the first tradie with a ute. They'll likely take it to the local tip for a slab or for $50.

    • 80 year olds don't do things like that.

Next, you'll suggest that they do the gardening themselves :)

      • 80 year olds don't do things like that.

Then offer to put an ad up on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace on their behalf.

If you're just shutting down suggestions, then why get involved, and why ask?

I'm not. I want to make sure it's worth it for someone to come out and have a look. An 80 year old won't want to deal with too many people.

My comment re 80 year olds don't do… was in regard to walking the street to find the first tradie with a ute.

Why don't you offer them $300, put it in your yard until you can figure out what to do with it.

    • Genius. If only the wife would let me.

Very little weight in a garden shed of that size for scrap metal recycling. It would likely weigh around 100kg, so your only looking at around $15-20 in scrap steel.

Having dealt with trying to get people to come disassemble and remove a shed offered for free on marketplace, it's not really worth the hassle. Best bet is grab a trailer or ute hire for a couple of hours and drop it at a local tip or scrap yard that accepts the metal for free.

  • In bulk from large construction sites, metal recyclers were paying $100 per ton (iron steel based metals nothing exotic), this was 6 years ago.
Your small shed has what, 50kg of metal?
Google metal recyclers and ask them for current prices.

OP would be lucky to get 30c/kg…. So $15-20 for a 50kg 'shed'.

      • would be lucky to get 30c/kg

That's what you get for heavy melt in-size steel. That's >6mm thick and < 2m length.

        • Correct…. As I said 'lucky to get', the real price is most likely way less. So the best case is $20 for the shed, but more like $10.

          • @JimmyF: There's no luck involved. A shed isn't heavy melt in-size, it's light iron. Light iron is ~$200/tonne at the moment

            • @brad1-8tsi:

              There's no luck involved

LOL did you hear the whooshing sound as what that statement means went flying over your head?

  • Is it solid or just the outer shell?

In the mean time, grab 8 people and carry it to another house.

    I deal in scrap metal.

A garden shred is classified as "Light Iron" or "shred". My price last week was 20c/kg. You'd get about 15c/kg because you aren't trading under an ABN. That would be at a larger yard. Smaller yards will "take it as a favour".

I only take steel as a biproduct as I'm not setup for large quantities. If I did have the capacity I'd only pay you if it was greater than 1 tonne.

The scrap yards all have a public drop off area if you just want to dump and run.

    It's worth $10-$15

    1. What type of metal, Ferrous or Non Ferrous?
    2. Gauge of metal?
    3. Sheet metal Total Sqm, plus Frame in kg?
    4. Painted or unpainted.

    Now phone Scrap metal Merchant/s.

Give us your workings and final self answered result here please.

Or see post above, all the hard yards done for you.

    • You neg, hide and not reply as to why.

  • A shed isn’t going to be worth in scrap value, but you shouldn’t need to pay to dump it. $330 to disassemble and remove does sound a bit steep, but the gardener time isn’t free and he probably just doesn’t really want to do it.

We have a local scrap metal business that does pick ups for households. They do it by suburb so you’d need to wait until they are in the area.

Alternatively, most of the scrap businesses will allow you to drop off for free. Our local tip also allows scrap metal drop off for free.
