Rate / Critique My Build - Budget $600

Looking at putting together a budget desktop now that prices have stabilised for light gaming.

I'm thinking an msi b560 tomohawk ($180), an i3 10105 ($119) 16gb DDR4 ($50 used) and a 6600xt ($250 used)

Welcome your feedback.

All in around $600 as I have the other parts already.

I'd say a Ryzen 5500 or 5600 with a cheap ($100-150) motherboard is probably better than that CPU.

CPU is probably bottlenecking a bit, I would say the Doggy said is good get a 5500 or 5600

Change the CPU. An i3 realistically is only good for office use. And even heavy Excel users or coders would use at least an i5.

Rubbish, the i3 10105 is a 4C/8T part that will easily keep up with mid-range GPUs in more graphically demanding titles.

Spending $120 on a CPU in a $600 build is the perfect ratio for a gaming focused build.

You are right. Didnt realise it is a 4 core cpu. I'll take that back.

  • i would pay the bit extra and get the 10400f

Probably just strong enough to play minesweeper

  • I'd probably go for a 5600. There was some 6600xts on ebay for $220. Make a pretty cheap machine that could handle a lot of games in 1440p. I'd probably just get the cheapest motherboard that did pcie4.

  • Thanks all for the feedback.

I'm thinking of flip flopping and buying a circa $1200 laptop with a 3060 when the next one comes up.

Just seems a lot more powerful and flexible than this desktop.
