I have 3 around my home for 5yrs now, no issues sofar, highly recommended. Got them via Amazon UK

    • +7

I have a 29 dollar one from Repco for 4 years, no issue

        • Mine failed first time too. Smashed all the plastic away to just try and use the hose. Terrible quality

        • +19

mlburnian has posted heaps of deals dating back to 2012, so he's not some Repco shill. He's just someone whose Repco hose reel has worked OK. Weird you've transferred your anger over your busted Repco reel to him.

        • +9

          they couldn't afford me, m8

        • You seem to have taken it personally.

      • Does that lock-off at any length, or only at set lengths?

        • +1

at set lengths, but they are close enough. Aldi is any length

    • Interesting, I have 2 Holman 30m jobs that have both failed after about 2 years, will have a look at these thanks

  • Ooooh thanks for sharing op. Have been after these for a while!

  • is bunnings price match costco?

    • Dont think Bunnings stock these anymore.

    • Mitre 10 stocks them, not sure about price matching though sorry

  • +7

Recently bought this Mechpro 20m retractable reel from Repco for $47. Very happy with it. Hose is nice and tough.

    https://www.repco.com.au/en/car-care-panel/car-care-accessor…

Matched it with the Hills 15m hose from Supercheap as where I wanted to place the retractable hose wasn't near the tap.

    • any issues with leaving the water on?

      • +2

I also have the Mechpro one and it's working well. I wouldn't recommend leaving the water on for ANY hose. You're going to get a leak somewhere/sometime

      • +1

One hose connector did pop off but upon inspection, the hose wasn't cut square. It was at a slight angle and a bit wavy. I cut it off square and re-terminated it and then there were no issues.

This Mechpro reel was for the backyard. For the frontyard, I had already converted a hose and accessories to Hoselink connectors. Since I've had a great run with them for so many years, I decided to order some more. Then I read the Hoselink comments below. So I'll be a bit more wary of the new Hoselink ones.

I wouldn't leave the tap on long term though. This incident, I was washing the car and was going to turn off the tap at the end. But it popped about an hour after last use.

I also have Gardena hose connectors and they haven't leaked at all. It's been around 5 years already. If the new Hoselink connectors fails, I'll be swapping with Gardena connectors.

One tip I've found that helps is when you are finished watering, use a trigger hose gun or a one way stop hose connector. Have water inside the hose under pressure before coiling up. This way, the hose is somewhat stiff and will prevent kinking. Then turn the tap off. This will also make sure that the hose is in its full pressure state when coiled up in the reel. Because if it is "deflated" and the next time you turn on the tap, it will expand and the pressure can crack the cylindrical part of a plastic reel.

Looks like the Repco marketing department are working weekends.

Hey get this. I’m sick to death of all my hoselink fittings breaking

    Premium my arse

    • +1

My hoselink fittings are also leaking. One was from rough use, like hose dragging on concrete occasionally. The other at the tap side is also leaking.

    • +1

hoselink? As in the $300 per reel brand?

    • Mine all suck too. I've done their repairs to no avail

    • +2

What I've heard consistently is the Hoselink fittings suck, but the reel itself is as good as they get. People swapping out the fittings for Gardena, or another high quality brand. But you've obviously gotta be committed to your hose reel, and able to justify the added costs, to do that.

      • I'd agree with that assessment ss an owner

        • Also agree. Have three reels and all of them the white ball inside the flow restricter and the handle of the flow restricter has died.

Useless fittings but hose itself goes strong. Might have to swap fittings. Hadn’t thought of that

  • -6

    Any better/cheaper alternative?
    Around $50 would be nice.

    • +8

Read above, someone posted an alternative geez

      • -3

Above link comes out as $71.

        Total $59
        Delivery $12
        Total $71

        Want something cheaper.

        • +10

          "Delivery $12"
          Reasonable rate to Africa
          .

        • Then google, and post the deal.

          • @Ulysses31: If I can do the research and find better alternatives, then I wouldn't be using this site…

        • +1

Price must’ve went up from $47 and now $59 which isn’t that bad. Plus check local stock you might have one in store

  • +1

I don't usually take my hose water skiing, so not for me.

  • +2

I have 3. Absolute junk. You leave the water on at all and they swell around the connections and pop off… Definetly not made for Australian weather. Highly recommend not buying

    • I have the same problem with my Holman from Bunnings. Any recommendations?

      • +1

I have a Holman one. No issues with it. All I can say is the hozelok will stretch after 1 day of leaving the pressure on which is horrible. Other brands at least can take it for a while. These are junk

      • +1

Hoselink and Gardena, but more $$$

      • +1

I have a Holman hose. One connector burst and flooded my front yard when I wasn't home. I replaced the burst end with a gardena. Two weeks later the other Holman end burst and flooded the garden also when I wasn't home. In the end, the saving from buying cheaper hose ended up costing me way more in water bills not to mention potentially other latent issues from flooding.

        • Did the Gardena hold up?

          • @Increase1: The gardena side held up but the holman was the weakest link.

        • +2

Why don't you just turn the tap off after finishing? Hard to reach or you just assume these are designed to work that way?

          • @gosund: Just turn it off man. I have auto timer that switched it off if I forget.

          • @gosund: After the first time I did but the second time a contractor used it and didn't turn it off.

      • Check out Delrico, the Rolls Royce of hose reels! We have one, not cheap but brilliant! Our other two are this one above (okay but nowhere near as solid) and a Gardena, also not as solid. We’ll replace the other two with Delrico when they cark it.

        • OOS though.

    • +15

Why don't you just turn off the tap? It's just right there isn't it? Understand it's a convenience, but hose triggers and plastic friction fittings are not designed to replace taps.

      • The hose is for tenant use, very hard to control them when you aren’t there unfortunately.

      • Oops I didn't see your comment. I was wondering the same. Don't let the plastic do metal's work.

  • +3

Not recommend. I bought this and still using it . The auto lock/release not works every time. And the hose is just average

  • +1

I have a 25m Nylex retractable hose from Bunnings that just keeps pulling back, it doesn’t hold anymore
That cost around ~100 at the time
Are higher quality ones meant to last longer or do they all suffer the same fate

  • Random question but does anyone know if the wall brackets, and bolts, are common between the different brands? Like to replace an existing one falling apart but really don't want to drill into my brick again in a different spot.

    • Unfortunately they are all different…even ones with same brand.

    • Was in same situation before. The bracket are usually different, but sometimes may be able to use the existing bracket if the axle has the same diameter. Or you are lucky the mounting holes are the same, then you easily swap out the old one.

The bracket is such a random thing they don't list the specifications on size or mounting holes. You really have to try your luck. At least Costco and Bunnings have easy return policies, you do have to waste a bit time to trial and error.

      • Measure existing and in store?
        .

        • Some have mountain templates, maybe you can get the supplier to email a pdf, it's a long shot but worth a try.

Opening boxes to check and measure may not be well received at some places.

    • Just bought a 30M from Aldi to replace a 20M Holman. Bracket had a larger diameter for the pin than the one from Holman but inserted a couple of PVC electrical connectors which fit perfectly inside the Holman bracket and was tight enough on the Aldi reel to hold it and let it swivel just fine. Saved some holes in the house.

  • Got one today thanks

I have 2 x 20m for a few years and they are great.

    $219 on amazon

  • +1

Costco had Gardena before. IMO it’s a much better brand with generic fittings

  • paid $79 back in 2019
    Still running strong

  • +2

Had 2 of these hozelock reels. Luckily they have 5 years warranty as they are trash. Returned to bunnos after 3 years of ownership. Both reels internal auto reels broke so I couldn't reel the hose back in. You also can't reel the hose when you have the tap running. I replaced them with hozelink and it was worth the additional price.

  • Mine just broke, lasted 8 years. internal winder failed. also faded quite badly.

  • I finally got mine from the last deal from Mitre 10, currently setting it up so I'll leave a review later haha

  • +1

I thought I’d pay extra for a “good” brand and got a Pope from Bunnings. It’s horrible like playing tug of war with a drunk Irishman.

  • They feel cheap, out of the box. And mine had only a few uses over several years before the winder broke inside. So I pulled the hose out, and the rest went to landfill. Hose is cheap crap, and folds/kinks if you even look at it.

  • Ended up buying one of these when I found Hozelink no longer made in Australia.
The hose is a bit flexible for my liking, meaning it stretches a bit which can require more effort to pull of reel. THe 20m hose can get a bit tight on there too (would recommend the 15m if it's enough) but the hose reel sits in full sun for a fair chunk of the day and has not missed a beat in about 2-3 years. The plastic hasn't faded yet either. It was bought pre covid so ended up paying about $230 delivered. THe fittings were good quality too.

    https://easyhose.com.au/easyhose-garden-hose-reel-with-premi…

  • Do you guys leave them open under burning sun or you cover then when not in use?

    • I had one that would get sun all day and one under a pergola. Both failed on me 3 years later.

      • It’s a garden tool/accessory and expect to work under all kinds of weather conditions.
If it won’t last in Sun for over a year definitely not worth it.

  • Hozelock or Gardena?

    • +2

Gardena gets my vote. Many mixed reviews of Hozelock. Very few, if any, unfavourable comments for Gardena.

      • +1

I mean when you are investing close to $200, you expect it to last for at least 5-7 years and work really well during that whole time.

    • +1

Delrico - they are far superior to any other brand we’ve had from Bunnings/Costco.

  • +1

These are MUCH better than the usual cheap Bunning's offerings.
Holman Nylex etc (Gardena is typically more expensive so haven't gone with them and have no experience)…. but all the cheaper well known brands them stop winding about 2 years after purchase.

My Hozelock (bought on a previous sale posted here on OzB) is still going strong.

  • Thanks OP. Been on the look out, bought 2.

  • Sort of a weird question, but can these be connected to a smart tap timer or will the pressure be too much and cause it burst?

Look at timers that would be compatible with Google Home.

  • +2

So this is good for keeping them hoes on lock?

  • Half the price of hoselink with 5 year gaurantee, its a tough one, the warranty on these probably makes it worth looking at, especially if you need two.

  • I have the manual wind up model and it is really durable…. My dog ate one of the fittings and the rep for the spares was really great over the phone…

  • -1

    Gardener…
These hoses in these retractable units are of low kink rating. You're paying a fortune for a low quality hose. On the other end of the scale you can now pay $150 for a 30m hose so if they included a premium hose into one of these units it would be around $400.

I use gardena as they're the best of the best however $150 for 30m they come with a 30 year warranty.

    • +1

Not sure how you get this but Bunnings sells the 30m version for $250 with 5 year warranty.

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/gardena-30m-roll-up-retractable-…

      • Low kink, low grade hose. For a premium Gardena hose you're paying $150 I'm not talking about a reel, a hose alone is $150. If you need length to do a corner house natures strip you'll be looking at 50-100m -$400 hoses.
You didn't read a word what I said.
Gardena actually makes higher grade hoses than this which are more expensive once again.
They become UV stabilised, better kink resistance, better warranty etc.

        https://www.mitre10.com.au/gardena-premium-super-flex-hose-1…

        • Check the description of the 30m retractable hose reel.

It’s also 10/10 kink rated so it’s not “low kink”, don’t take assumption just because it’s not as colourful as the one you showed.

It’s also made with UV stabilised material, and together with the protective casing which your hose is living in most of its life, I can guarantee you the hose alone will last longer than your $150 counterpart.

What you are actually paying, is the ultra long 30 years warranty, which in fact, you are prepaying all the warranty replacements you are claiming during the 30 years. You may argue it may still be a good investment due to inflation, but if you don’t store the hose property during all the 30 years, and got damaged by dog or wildlifes just because you are lazy for one day, your investment is gone for good.

          • @OzComment: I'm gonna bowl down the middle, if that's alright.

Neofelis is comparing apples to oranges.

And I had one of these Hoselink reels, and it was obviously cheap. Broke easily, so I pulled the hose out of it. It's crap aswell. Same people that make zooper-dooper wrappers, I reckon.

But I spent a solid hour going in circles at Bunnings yesterday, and there seems to be no clear better option/winner. I left angry, with a 20mtr Nylex retractable for $179. Appearance suits the house, it's a bit short, but that kept the price down, and hopefully money in the winder etc.

It'll probably break as well, and I'll be left paying $300 for a massive Gardena one.

            • @Ulysses31: I don’t understand, Gardena 20m retractable hose reel is selling $189 at Bunnings. You should have gotten this if you are paying $179.

              • @OzComment: Can’t remember. It was a blur, and my head hurt. Felt like I was in the middle.

  • bunnings have their cheapo "aqua" brand version for $49, 20m in length

decent price considering how much these things go for

the wall mount is pretty average though, you wouldn't want it installed where it's exposed to the aussie sun

have one installed under a pergola, feels like a bit of a bargain when looking at other prices.. can't believe how much these things go for

converted the 50m $7 kogan hose it replaced into an auto watering system haha

  • Looks like OOS online. Anyone knows if there is a way to check stock in each warehouse other than a cold call? Thanks.
