I am visiting a semi-rural area for three days in a location that is only (reliably) covered by Telstra.
However I will need some data while I am there, around 5-10Gb.
I have looked at Telstra itself, and the best option seems to be to start a 30Gb monthly data plan ($25) and then immediately let it lapse.
Are there better options? (e.g. short-term SIMs, plans via MVNOs etc)
Boost might be de-prioritised compared to full Telstra. I have noticed slower speeds when switching from Telstra to Boost. Coverage should be the same.

Have a check at your local supermarket. I picked up a $10 Vodafone SIM-card to test their network strength that came preloaded with something like 5GB data and unlimited calls/text for just $4 from Coles.
Another option is to see if there's any temporary eSIM packages to buy online if your phone supports it.

The Telstra deal is good because it is shaped at a reasonable 1.5Mbps after you hit the 30GB cap. It is a shame though, the offer used to be $15 a month with a bit less data. I wish I kept the offer so I could be grandfathered into the old price, but no I decided to save $15 a month and cancel it. Don't forge that Telstra is a lot more reliable and faster in a lot of areas. My mom constantly wants to tether off me because Optus or whatever trash she uses gives her bad reception wherever we meet.
Check the coles catalog coming out on Wednesday. They have the Telstra $30 / 30gig sim back for $15.
I was in winton last month. I had no coverage with vodafone. I switched to woolworths e sim which is on the telstra network. 25 gb for 25AUD. coverage was excellent.
