Discounted Skype Credit

Hi Everyone,

Previously we've had Woolies offer 50% off Skype Credit, but I haven't seen anything for quite a while.

Running low on my existing Skype Credit, and wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting Skype Credit at a discount?

Thanks.

  • Who are you calling?

    • Totally relevant question. Yes op we want neeeeeed to know who you are calling. Otherwise we can’t possibly answer your question.

      • The better question is in what country are the people they're calling, e.g. the fairly regular Boost Mobile cashback deals might be better since they include the following.

        • Unlimited standard calls to 20 selected destinations: Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, Vietnam.
        • 300 mins to standard numbers to 30 selected destinations: Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, UAE
        • 300 texts to standard numbers to any country in the world.

It's generally for overseas travel, to call other countries whilst away, and to call back home.

Ie, banks (when the banks block your card).

Accomodation providers (when they don't have WhatsApp).

      Etc.

        Try : https://www.crazytel.com.au/residential/voiphomephone/
They do flat rate charges for oz number and no connection fee.

        • This looks really competitive and suitable.

Do they have an app that you use to make calls over 4G / wifi?

How's the call qualities been when you've tried it?

          Thanks

@movieman: For me, the quality is definitely a lot better and more stable than the Telstra home line (VoIP), so I have abandoned that for this.
As I said below, I cannot attest to whether it works overseas (I definitely intend to try when overseas). I used to use Mynetphone overseas without issue, so this is similar, hence why I think it should work.

The phone app is called Crazyphone, you just have to have some data (whether wifi or mobile data). For my laptop, I use Zoiper.

            • @bluesky: What's Zoiper?

              • @bettina44: It is a softphone you can download for use on desktop and mobiles. There is a free version for non-commercial use. For more info, and download - goto zoiper.com. You can configure it to work with Crazytel VOIP.

If you have a Prezzee Smart gift card with unswapped credit left, you can swap it for Skype credit. I did this recently. Of course, the discount is not going to be anywhere near 50%. But better than nothing.

If this is your aim, I have a feeling (although I have not tried it myself) that you may be able to use Crazytel, even overseas. Would be good if someone can confirm this.
Assuming this works, you can signup for their PAYG plan, and download their app onto your phone to use. They even give you $2 free credit for new signup. The rates seem very reasonable, as a matter of fact, even better than the Skype rates, for some destinations.

    • when the banks block your card

why are they blocking your card?

Probably he worries on bank security measure when using the card overseas. He should be fine using the actual card, but when he is doing online purchase it could be an issue.

Unfortunately I've used ING and Citibank in the past, and ING has actually blocked the card after an attempted transaction with the actual card.

Once was at a petrol station. Another time (same trip) was at a book store. The bank was aware of my travel plans.

That's exactly what I asked ING, after waiting on hold 20+ minutes…

'For your security' blah blah blah.

I wouldn't waste any money on Skype nowadays. There are many more affordable and better providers for overseas call and VoIP options. The reason Skype hasn't gone bankrupt is probably due to Microsoft keep siphoning money into it from the rip off office and windows services.
I have in the last few months trying to burn up credit on Skype and ran into numerous issues (call to the same number overseas went unanswered, diverted to some weird telesales line about Seychelles or fancy tropical paradise, saying number not existed, refusing to work when not connected to wifi and worst of all serious lag during call, and mind you the rates are nearly a dollar a minute)
And when calling over Skype you will have issue with keypad response type, even within Australia.

  • Thanks, I'm a frequent user of Skype and Skype works well for me. I have friends and family in the US and I need a service that can be accessed by traditional phones, smart phones and computers. I also receive text messages. I have a US telephone number that I purchased from Skype and my colleagues and others can ring me as if I was living in the US. It works great! Skype offered 50% off their regular price usually in July and August each year. I haven't seen that offer for 3 or 4 years. I was interested in a response about prezzee (above) and I'll check that out, as I have some prezzee credit as well. I'll be watching for other responses.
