Most cpap stores all have, sale on! But they're all still the similar price with inflated rrp.

    • +3

this is a decent deal for both, cant see anyone near this price for both?

      • If you look at other parts of the stores, everything is more expensive that CPAP direct.

It sucks but it gets easier. Just keep on keeping on.

      • +21

If it sucks you've hit the wrong button

    • +1

I find it hard also, something like 30% of people give up using it. I dont like the pressure of air blowing me up, i dont get how people get used to it

      • +8

try different masks and different pressures (starting pressures). first cpl weeks i got frustrated and took it off midway through the night, it took me a cpl months and its best thing i ever did

        • +3

I couldn't deal with it until my clinic turned on the pressure relief for breathing out. Sleeping a lot better now, feeling less tired.

      • +8

I started wearing it when I was really tired. So I would wear it after doing exercise, staying up very late or drinking a lot.

I also tried a lot of masks until I found the one that suited me best. I find the P30i the easiest to use because the mount is on the top so that you can roll around, and it's not affected. I got a hose stand so the hose is out of the way. I started with the full face mask that when I first tried the rental.

But most importantly, I got a partner who got the shits with my snoring. She proved to be more annoying than the CPAP.

        • +1

I got a partner who got the shits with my snoring

Well yea, waking up on a shit covered bed definitely would be annoying AF

        • My partner says my machine is really loud. I have a SmartMed. Wondering if I buy an Airsense 10 would be quieter for her…? Anyone got experience with these two?

          • +1

@Pub Envelope: I've got an airsense 10, partner finds it's a lot quieter than me snoring. At first she wasn't sure if it was even on because it was quieter than the air con.

          • @Pub Envelope: I don't have that model, but that may mean it's leaking. Unless it's cranked up the pressure, that's the main reason why it would be noisy.

          • @Pub Envelope: No experience with SmartMed, but when I first go my Airsense 10 my wife commented that it was so much quieter than she thought a CPAP would be.

          • @Pub Envelope: ya it's really quiet

        • +1

But most importantly, I got a partner who got the shits with my snoring. She proved to be more annoying than the CPAP.

So you got rid of the partner?

      • I have pretty much given up on mine and will probably end up selling it unfortunately.

Sleep apnea can cause heart disease. Sounds a bit soft that you can’t get used to it.

        • What issues are you having?

      • +3

When I was first diagnosed a few years back, the sleep centre first loaned me a CPAP (fixed pressure) machine. it took me a couple of weeks to get used to wearing it all night but I soon learned it was making my chest sore. I went back to the sleep centre and they then loaned me an APAP (automatic pressure) machine. That made all the difference in my case and I purchased the APAP machine even though they are more expensive. I learned how to adjust the settings myself and haven't looked back. I simply cannot live without it now.

There is an Aussie youtube channel by the name of CPAP Reviews. He has a lot of informative videos on CPAP/APAP machines, problems people encounter and how to fix them. This may require delving into the hidden settings of the machine, if you are comfortable doing it yourself.
        https://www.youtube.com/@CPAPReviews

It might be best not to do that though if you're under medical supervision.

        • It may also be worth mentioning that I use a nasal pillow only and it took time to learn to adapt to it. I didn't like the nose and mouth mask at all.

      • I was getting claustrophobic feelings so after research i went to a mouth only mask so the mask/air it worked for me. The specialist was against it but the cpap reports showed it worked. Dont need cpap now but bought all cpap stuff from the USA. Mask was one fifth the price you pay here. Machines half to one third the price landed.

    • Yeh i use mouthgaurd now. Oventus one but now they are gone. Oh wells.

    • when i first used cpap a few years ago, the first week or so is def an adjustment period, but when you keep at it and get used to it, you will realise a few months down the track when you're in bed and forget with a sore chest, you will realise how you cant live without it.

When the phillips recall occurred, i freaked out due resmed shortage, it was the worst 2-3 weeks of my life without proper sleep.

Hi Zulu, any idea when Airsense 11 will be available in Au?

    • Totally agree as can be picked up from the US but nothing in AU and no sellers

    • I thought it was out already?

      • +1

Only in US…. Can't find it in AU

  • +1

How often does a water chamber need to be replaced? My current one is still good. Also I use a hose cover and that fixed the rainout problem as I use max humidity but I am wondering if the heated air will help open up my nostrils more at night?

    • +2

Heated air is just a comfort thing from what they told me, I’ve been going over 3 years on the same one with no issues.

Might grab this as a backup though, and hose will be needed eventually

      • I've had to replace hose in first 6 months, I suspect a clumsy cat trying to stop themselves falling off the bed may have been the culprit for the tiny rip I found in the hose though!!

I do need to get a cover to stop rainout though, I just have it turned down ATM but would prefer it to be maxed out.

Not sure about the tank though… Mine seems ok… but it is occasionally noisy.. that might just be the apap setting though

        • I'm not super gentle with mine, if it's noisy I just give it a whack to put it into place properly. Probably not a good idea but it has lasted fine so far!

I don't use APAP though, I just go with fixed. Didn't even realise there was a humidity adjustment TBH, sometimes I wake up with the tank dry, other times a fair bit of water, I thought it was automatic. Never had a rainout though, just keeping it lower than the bed (but off the floor) seems to do the trick.

      • yea mine are only a year old but grabbing to keep in the cupboard as backups

  • +11

Ugh. Currently saving up to buy one myself. Can't believe you can't get a Medicare rebate on sleep. I mean, it's kinda important right?

    • +4

Lots of things aren't covered by Medicare.

Dental care is far more important for everyone and far more expensive than a CPAP machine and that's not covered by Medicare.

Some health care funds provide up to 100% rebate on CPAP machines and accessories.

      • +4

No funds I can find cover anything more than 80% UP TO 600.

Plus with the waiting period I may as well save up

        • +4

Info via a family member who has insurance coverage that may be helpful:

          • BUPA "Top Extras 90" coverage is 85% of up to $1,000 and then 1 service of the machine covered totally every 2 years. Also covers $200 worth of accessory purchases for the machine (hoses, nose bits, etc…).

          • BUPA "Total Extras" coverage is 80% of cost up to $800 for one machine every two years.

          • ACA Health Benefits Fund coverage does up to 80% of cost up to $1,200.

          Just three of many options.

      • +2

I would suggest that sleep apnea is more important than dental care since it can cause many, even severe, health problems … and even death.

        https://www.healthline.com/health/can-you-die-from-sleep-apn…

        • They're both important - poor dental health can lead to severe health problems that can kill you too, like blood infections and heart disease.

    • +1

I have a mid-level plan with BUPA and they give me $500 towards buying a CPAP every two years if I have a medical certificate.

    • +1

You can apply to access your super if you don't have the $$$.

    • If you're in NSW you can apply from EnableNSW website.

      • You will need 2 months' worth of CPAP machine data (may have to rent a unit for the first 2 months), and see a respiratory physician to make the application to EnableNSW on your behalf, as well as co-contribute $100 towards the machine.
The only brand/model on offer from EnableNSW is the ResMed AirSense™ 10 Elite, note this is a fixed pressure only machine.
I should add that it is most likely the version without the celluar (3G/4G) connectivity.

      • Have you had any experience with them?
I'm a long term user and might be an option to get a newer unit.

        • Yes, as mentioned above by @purple1, your respiratory physician needs to make an application and you need to fill-up a form online as well. Not sure about the 2 mos. data but they asked me to do an overnight sleep study in hospital apart from the initial home sleep study I've already done. You pay $100 and you will get a brand new ResMed AirSense™ 10 Elite, very limited compared to the Autoset I initially rented but can't complain if it's almost free.

          • @johnyBgood: The 2 months data is mainly for compliance, to ensure the patient is using the machine for at least 6 hours every night, and that it is helping to manage the patient's sleep disorder.
If an autoset/variable pressure machine works better for you, then I would highly recommend it, you can't put a price on a goodnight sleep, or can you ;)

            • @purple1: Thanks, it was never mentioned to me but I have rented for 2 mos before getting the new machine. Do you know if fixed pressure means I can't change the pressure anymore to my liking? Ie. When set to 16, is that the pressure it will be set forever on that machine? I can't find any setting in elite to change this and can't find the no. of events in the result as well which is very odd as I think this is a very important data to know whether the machine is doing it's job without reading result from the sd card.

              • +2

@johnyBgood: You can still change the pressure on a fix pressure machine, and the machine will deliver that set pressure throughout the night.
With an autoset pressure machine, you can define the upper and lower pressure limits, and the machine will deliver a pressure based on your breathing using its built-in algorithm within your set upper/lower limits.
Some autoset machines have more than one algorithm that you can choose, example the "for her mode".
The Elite model should have the same reporting data as the Autoset model. However, you do need to set the "Essentials" option to "Plus" instead of "on". You will need to enter the Clinical Menu to view/change this option (Hold the Home button and the Click-wheel button at the same time for a few seconds).
You can change the pressure from the Clinical Menu as well.

                • +1

@purple1: Thank you so much, that worked! Really appreciate it, now I can see the pressure and events. Don't know why they didn't put this in the manual.

        • My current one is a Resmed s9 autoset. It's definitely nice having the auto.

    • The Australian CPAP market is ridiculous.
Get a used / refurb unit on ebay or import one from the US.

    • tbh, if cpap were on medicare australia would be broke. with the rise of obesity, can you imagine the amount of claims for obstructive sleep apnea :(

    • When i used cpap bought everything from USA. Mask was one fifth the price you pay here. Machines half to one third the price landed.

  • Do I need to replace the chamber if mine is 2y old and still looks new. In the last 3 months I noticed that there is water under the unit bit nothing is leaking.. not sure what is going on.

    • +1

Nah only replace it when it starts corroding

    • +8

There are youtube videos explaining this. The constant heating and cooling of the water tank over time can cause the seal between the plastic top and the metal bottom of the water tank to fail causing some water to leak out over night.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSmTv1EY0g0&t=177s

If this happens you MUST replace your water tank otherwise the water could damage your CPAP machine (not to mention the possible electrocution risk).

Note that Resmed only provide a factory guarantee of 90 days for most of their parts, including the water tub which is utterly ridiculous given the cost of their parts.

IMHO this is a design flaw that should be replaced under ACCC statutory warranty conditions (product must be fit for purpose) but have not heard of anyone being successful in claiming.

I lodged a complaint with CPAP Victoria when my tank failed after just 6 months but they said it was outside its warranty period.

Resmed is a company that was founded in Australia and CPAP technology was discovered in an Australian university with Australian taxpayer research funding. So it really pisses me off that Australians have to pay so much more than those in the US for Resmed products that are manufactured here!

      • Aaahhh ok.. so might be time to replace it then haha..

      • +1

Thanks, just bought an additional hose and tank just based on your comment above.

  • Thanks, nice deal. Will claim most of it back on health insurance …

  • Is there anything better than the Airsense 10?

    • +1

No, the 11 has some pretty horrendous reviews

    • F&P Sleep style i found pretty good and better than the Airsense in some ways. I am trying to get a trial Lowenstein Prisma to try before i buy my own machine.

  • +2

Btw if you dont get dry using cpap without humidifier, theres an end cap you can buy that negates the need for the tank and demineralised water.

    • Got a link or details to it?

      • It says on that link, " If you don't want to use the humidifier, you need to insert a side cover into the device."

        • It does, but I read this as: if you don't want the humidifier attachment in place, then you need to use a side cover.

That's because the air flow loop will be open and no air will get pumped to the mask.

It will still work with no water in the humidifier and the heater turned off. (Need to set the climate control to manual and then wind back the humidifier to off)

  • My issue is the seal on the unit that the humidifier interfaces with, it is a bit malformed and doesn’t always seal properly. I believe the seal is glued to the unit and can’t be replaced.
    I’ve made do for now.

    • Not sure what you mean but check FitzChivalry Farseer post above, you may need to replace it?

      • +1

Nah it’s in the recess where the humidifier chamber interfaces with the main unit.

  • +1

It is bad I just turn off the heating and humidity and go dry? I just can't be bothered filling that thing up every day, I wish they made an enormous one that lasted a week.

    • +2

I know that sounds good in theory but you don't want to be breathing in the vapours of tepid water thats been standing around for a week

    • I go dry as i cant be bothered rising it and washing as regularly. I hate heated air.

you do tend to need a drink over night if you don't have the humidifier on though.

im always very dry in the morning.

  • Airsense 10 machine with mask was $1400 few days ago elsewhere

  • Where's the cheapest place to buy a machine ATM? Mine just died. Tried looking and cheapest is 1.4k for the F&P sleep style

    • $1.4k is not made if resmed airsense 10 with a mask

      • Not resmed and with no mask. Finding it hard to re-buy a machine I bought 7 years ago for double the price

    • BMC's are reasonable machines. But I heard that the cpapreview/sleephq channel has big discounts on the aisense 10 card model as stocks of the 4g model are back - but the price is hidden behind subscription.

      • Want a machine that's Oscar compatible so I'm not dependent on sleephq.

        • yeah understand - i like my f&p for that reason, I got a 2nd hand one on marketplace with 500hrs for 800$

        • My resmed airsense 10 autoset is Oscar compatible. Used sleephq while it was free but now they charge. Oscar does all I need.

      • $USD499.00 - for the USA only or can we get that deal here? I am not a member of that forum.

  • I've previously tried the Airsense 10 Auto and had the option to see the events/hr and I can change the pressure. Now I'm using Airsense 10 elite and can't find the no. of events anymore and no option to change air pressure, very limited. Is this normal or there's a hidden menu to show these options?

    • +2

I’m pretty sure the elite are all set pressures and autoset are the ones you can change. There is a hidden menu if you hold the dial button and home button down on the autoset so may have one on the elite too

      • Thanks, got it to work now by holding the home and dial button for 2 seconds, found the "Plus" hidden menu.
