I can't wait for them to add golden sun.
    Holy shit.

    • +1

I never played that back in the day, definitely keen to give it a proper crack once it's added to this considering how many people praise it!

      • I have the og cartridge, still one of the greatest mario games

        • +4

I personally think Fire Emblem is the greatest mario game

    • +2

I can finally replay and finish it this time

      • +1

        hahaha same!
I always got nearish to the end.

    • +1

Hopefully I can finally beat the secret boss. Really like the Djinn system where you can change your moves.

    • +1

I am in the same boat. Extremely excited for golden sun

    • …and here I am with the real gameboy with golden sun cartridge collecting dust in the store room…

      • I have them too.
But I can't comfortably hold a gba anymore.

  • +6

Played the first couple levels of Kirby and one level of Mario Kart, I know Nintendo didn't invent it, but the best thing about their emulators for me is the rewind function. Try to use it as rarely as possible, but it's definitely a great feature. If GoldenEye had save states on the Xbox version I wouldn't still have 4 or 5 speedrun trophies to go.

Now to play Metroid 2 I guess, since I never bothered to play the 3DS remake. Love that there's a Tetris in the NOS now, but unfortunately, while people fondly remember GB Tetris, it's shit. Any version of Tetris without the up button instant drop is nigh on unplayable to me at this point. Whereas GoldenEye absolutely holds up.

GoldenEye is really the only game I've got to play for more than five minutes the last couple weeks. Have you heard about my Lord and saviour, James Bond 007?

    • +1

I had a go at GoldenEye on my Switch, hoping to relive some childhood fun, but found the controllers much too sensitive…

I used the Solitaire control scheme and remapped the trigger buttons, but it was just unplayable, being impossible to aim.

Are you using the N64 controller, or have any other tips?

      • +6

Best tip is to just play the Xbox version.

Buuuut, in terms of Switch, I don't have the N64 remote. I've done the Solitaire trick too. Though I swapped the sticks and triggers, and made the interact/reload button square (I forget, I think it's Y on Switch, either way, the left face button). Feels a lot better. Buuuut, I'd personally like to be able to turn off the free aim like you can on Xbox, maybe I just don't see the option, but it is very cumbersome, would much rather it just show the reticle when you hold the left trigger.

Anyway, on Switch, which I've admittedly played it on less, I've only beat the game on easy, working my way through it now on the second level. More than anything it feels super easy coming off the speedruns and higher difficulty on Xbox, so I'm having an easier time than some on Switch, bc I'm jumping back into a lower difficulty version of levels I have been stomping through the last couple weeks.

In terms of crouching, on Xbox you can just hit B and go up or down which is great, on Switch you still have to hold the free aim button, then pull your guy down with the stick, then let go of free aim, and in that order, to get him crouched, which is tedious as balls. I could be clueless, but I can't see a way to map that to an individual button, which is poopoo.

In any case, this is what the preset in my Switch menu says, with the Solitaire scheme selected in game,

        L is mapped to ZL
        ZL is mapped to ZR
        RS is mapped to LS
        LS to RS
        A to X
        X to A
        Y to B
        B to Y

And that gets me normal dual stick running around, with R2 to shoot, L2 to aim, and square to reload / interact. Wouldn't mind a crouch button and free aim gone, but outside those two, nothing really I'd tweak if I could.

Thanks so much for the great write-up!

I'll have to give your suggestions a go.

    • +3

Tell me your life story next please

      • +9

It all starts in nineteen diggidy two, we had to say diggidy, because the kaizer had stolen our word for twenty.

  • I had the basic family subscription and now paid for the expansion family subscription. Shows at $59. down from $119. Is this normal or is it discounted at the moment?

    • +4

They deduct your current subscription from the upgrade price.

    • +9

      Sure was!

    • -2

Gotta get those internet points amirite?

    • +12

Not everyone watches the Nintendo Direct.

Thanks OP, I just might renew my sub now.

  • +5

Sucks GBA is expansion only, but there's not really enough games I want to play there to warrant the upgrade imo.

Oracle of Time/Seasons is going to be amazing though, can't wait to share my ring codes on Ozb!

    • +3

Nintendo is hellbent on ensuring Any previous mainline Pokemon titles never make its way on the switch until the very last expansion pack.

  • Those are some good games.

  • Hey here's a question. How come we don't see old Nintendo consoles and games in op shops and the second hand market in Australia? Seems to be quite common to score a big haul of these in the US.

    • +5

You are about 20 years too late

      • +1

Not to mention Australian/ PAL Stock of the titles are even rarer than the NTSC/NA versions.

        • +3

Hmm, depends which ones. I found a sealed devils third at JB last year (!) For $10, and was all wow this is that super rare game all those YouTubers talk about in their Wii U videos, how lucky!

Nah, our version worth about $40 theirs is triple digits still I think. Or like sonic for master system, I saw a video recently talking about it and I was like oh damn wish I hadn't sold all that stuff for peanuts when I was a kid.. but again ours isn't that desirable for some of those big name titles, probably because of pal slowdown on older consoles. But the right game sure… I do miss sonic chaos though, although I bet it didn't age well lol.

Or if you are talking just about volume produced then yeah I imagine the amount out there is probably a bit less than the NA market.

    • +1

How come we don't see old Nintendo consoles and games in op shops and the second hand market in Australia?

Cause they are either in collectors hands or sold at a huge markup online.

    • There’s a few places in Melbourne you can score a lot of snes, gameboy, n64 games etc.

      • Where it be?

        • +1

There’s a joint called round again in coburg that has heaps. And most cash converters I see them too

    • +1

I've wondered this too, a lot of the op shops that I have seen them in seem to lock them away and charge a stupid amount, whether they are desirable or not.

I've got the odd game here and there though, but nothing like those retro flipper videos you see on YouTube. A Mario party for GameCube with the wrong manual inside was probably the most interesting game I've found, and that was 10 years ago lol.

The other thing I assume is happening is the staff are either grabbing them out the back and trying to sell them selves, or online for the store, or there are dedicated retro flippers here too, if that's their job they probably hit up every store within 15km 4-5 times a week, leaving only a sad trail of Xbox FIFA behind.

    • +2

There might be but YOU will never see it, because there are people who hawk for such deals to resell them at the right market price.

What's new is that you will very very rarely stumble on such a haul, you need to be actively engaged in finding them.

Also, most people lie on the Internet, for some sense of clout, so that "big haul for $5" is probably their own collection they've spent thousands on.

    • +2

There's plenty going around in the second hand market (marketplace, gumtree, ebay etc.)

In the Australian market everyone seems to have an idea of the value of their retro items, so it's very rare to see Nintendo stuff pop up in Op Shops nowadays. That said I find you can have some good luck with original Xbox/360 and Playstation 2/3 games in Op Shops.

Still bargains to be had, however you've got to be very quick and very lucky to get your hands on one.

  • +1

No "A boy and his blob"? Or Prince of Persia?

    • I think a boy and his blob is getting an updated release, so they probably didn't want to lose sales on that. I think I saw it on limited runs website recently

  • +1

Just updated my Switch so I can get that Game Boy Tetris good-ness!!

  • +3

just played Tetris on game boy still got it heheh.

    • +1

Yee that's what I'm talking bout. Moved house recently and found my banana yellow game pak for DK Land on OG Gameboi. That soundtrack bangin'.

      • Haha I've got that too! Tried to play recently… Couldn't work out how the hell I used to play in the car at night, I couldn't see the screen during the day

        • The struggle was real. I recall playing under a desk lamp at night pointed right at the screen?

  • +3

I’ve been playing a lot of these games on the analogue pocket as of late

  • +5

"Now you don't need to wait to pass a street light in the car so you can see the screen anymore!"

    Memories triggered!

  • When Sega's Vitua Striker will be in Switch?

  • +1

And no Pokémon , lol. Guess I’ll just play them on the steam deck

  • Played Tetris for a while. Now I want a Miyoo Mini. So good!

    • I discovered Apotris on the MM. Yummy!

  • There is no way to buy certain titles individually? You must have a subscription to play them?

    • +1

      Correct

  • +1

Is there a way to get the sub any cheaper? Marked down Nintendo E-Shop cards etc?

    • Could always just get the 10%/15% gift cards for JB/EB at Coles or woolies and buy some eShop vouchers that way, or wait for a direct discount on those eShop vouchers.

Or split the cost on a family account.

    • The classified section of ozbargain might have some people looking to share a family account.

For a full family of 8, it works out to $13.75/person for a year for NSO + Expansion which in comparison is $59.95 for individual

  • +1

    I want super mario land!!!

    • Yeah I played a lot of Super Mario Land on my gameboy.

  • I actually surprised there are no pokemon games on the gameboy section. I want them to emulate a link cable so I can battle people lol,.

    • There's a Pokemon thing soon so they may be announced then.

Online is implemented already (for Tetris and Mario Kart for example) so hopefully it works for Pokemon too.

    • I'm sure they'll add them soon, for what it's worth the virtual console on the 3DS launched June 2011, and Pokemon Red and Blue didn't come out until 2016. Doubt we'd wait anywhere near 5 years but fingers crossed.

  • +1

    What about Virtualboy? :D

    • Missed opportunity on 3DS
