King C. Gillette Double Edge Safety Razor + 5 Razor Blades $14.95 @ Woolworths

900

Hello Fellow Ozbargainers,

Here's a great deal on this Double Edge Shaver.

After years of using the cartridge shavers, I dabbled with a straight edge razor, but unfortunately cut myself too many times.

Was looking for a double edge shaver, and when I saw this at Woolies for half price, it seemed a fair price for a starter one (comes with 5 blades).

Good luck, and happy shaving!

Will not buy Gillette due to they anti-white male advertising

Don't just tell us, make sure you tell everyone. People will want to know.

As a white male myself - I think we've had a decent run over the last few centuries or so, but hey if you feel we need a leg up and want to plant your flag there, fair play to you I suppose.

      • Zing!

      • +10

The problem here is that you aren't a few centuries old, so you didn't have any run that whole time, much less a decent one. Race and class-based categorizing, and multi-generational assumptions like this can be questioned. Most especially now with so many not belonging to a single race/ethnicity. It just breaks down.

      • +2

Plenty of the responses are sexist and racist, with dozens complaining that the ad makes white men in particular look bad and arguing that, basically, there is no such thing as “toxic masculinity,” but rather a tragic lack of masculine influences in schools and homes because women are so bad at holding on to husbands and selfishly insist on being the majority of public school teachers.

Typical though. You can't see the matrix, because you are the matrix. I find comfort in meeting men who are self-aware and actively pushing for positive changes.

    • +6

I've boycotted em ever since they did that stupid ad with the 12 year old kiwi kid.

Gillette… the best a feminist whipping post manchild can get. 🎼♬♪♩♫♩

LOL. "Their" (man-hating feminists and self-loathing "men") latest round of whining is that many men are doing exactly what they always wanted us to… swearing off dating and marrying western women, and instead searching places like South East Asia for what they snarkily label and imply as "submissive" and "uneducated/dumb" women who "need a feminist awakening" (become miserable whiners) like them.

No, they're not submissive, they just haven't been fully brainwashed so understand the real value of men, and that generally, men and women are happiest in different yet complimentary roles.

Oh and of course the latest man-hating trend where women video men at public gyms then shame them online for daring to glance in their direction. I mean NO-ONE would EVER look at a woman videoing themselves, while wearing something so tight and revealing it broadcasts the results of their latest pap smear while muttering to themselves, "Feral… that toxic male… just wait… I know the creep will look at me… AHA GOTCHA!"

Seems it is not just your facial hairs that are thick and wirey.

        • Been peeking through my bathroom window watching me showering?

I use my razor from this kit from years ago to this day. Never had a reason to change. Highly recommend also getting a bottle of proraso after shave.

They had this one few days back.

This post has link to some blades bargain.

    • Maybe it's that one that had the blades made in China (could have been both) this entire range looked REALLY cheap and nasty when I saw them instore, they were clearing out at my local as well.

$7.50 or $15 for ten Chinese blades, that will be like torture to use is cruel and unusual punishment for both you and your wallet. The razor has a terrible all slick handle - what were they thinking. No idea on the soap.

The brush might be ok - I have nice silvertips but prefer to use a pretty basic synthetic - vastly superior to natural IMHO.

Toxic masculinity and shaving techniques. 2 great discussion reasons to click a link on ozb. This website is fantastic

  • I buy plastic safety razors with 5 double sided blades in Bali for only a few dollars. I will be there next week.

The Bic version uses blades made in Greece.

The best blades are Voskhod blades with teflon edges made in Russia.

    • Voskod are PTFE coated (yes teflon) there's a few blades with similar coatings. Are they the best? I know a few people who liked them but the real blades savants I knew from shaving forums didn't think they were anywhere near the upper level stuff.

But I think they're reasonable value for money as they were pretty cheap - also comes into if you want to buy Russian made & OWNED goods. Caveat emptor.

  • Pretty happy with mine. Would recommend purchasing the Beard & Blade Double Edge Blade Kit to try out a variety of blades if you haven't had a double edge razor before. Australian company with good service.

      From the link I have you get;

-Astra greens (good solid blades, regarded by many as a benchmark, reliable blade)
      -Derby Extra (sub par blade)
      - Derby Premiums (no comment as not familiar with these)
      - Modern Wilkinson Swords: WS have a bunch of different varients but all their modern stuff was pretty grim IIRC, which contrast with their vintage stuff which is near the best you can source
      - Parker: Not familiar with them, but they're an Indian company who primarily made razors - I'd expect these to be outsourced and likely average at best.

Is it a good blade selection (any of their variety packs) when there's no Gillette products on offer? I reckon buy a few individual packs of the better regarded stuff - as Derby, parker, modern WS are going to very rarely be even close to the best choice (IMHO). They just fatten their margins on these packs to new shavers.

Been using this for years, can't go wrong, blades are cheap, no plastic involved.

    • It's only been out for maybe 3

        Safety razors in general*

    Designed for edging 💦

  • I have this and for some reason it doesn’t shave smoothly like the Jack the Barber does, I tried the same blade and process but it just doesn’t unless you pass twice or more whereas with Jack the Barber it shaves at every stroke, maybe is just my model? I am not sure..

  • +3

wow this is so much more affordable. i remember doing heaps of research onto this haha

    thanks for sharing op!

Well now we know jv is not a woman…

These are fine. Add Astra Platinum blades (100 for like $20) and Pro Raso products.

    Budget for a luxury shave.

    • +2

I also recommend these Astra blades. They're very efficient, good for newbies like myself, and economical. I purchased a pack during the height of the pandemic, and they're still holding up well. I won't have to buy any more blades for another year or two.

FYI this is 10 replacement blades only, doesn't have the safety razor. The picture is wrong. I learned the hard way after ordering last week :(

  • Leaf razor - the gold standard.

    • Interesting. Looks pretty cool

    • @Ender Wiggin
Hilarious that their tag line for this razor is,"We’re designing the future of shaving, and that future is plastic-free, recyclable and refillable."

Now is that their design they're spruiking or literally ANY safety razor made within the last 100+ years?

And you use single edge blades (which are expensive & hard to find) or DE blades snapped in half (which is always an exercise I feel is possible to end in a trip to A&E).

So you're paying $USD85 for a pivoting single edge blade razor - that uses DE blades. :-/

      • Single edge blades $12 for 100 on ebay, change blades every 10 days and its a dollar a month to shave.

        • You're correct with that - I should have said more expensive relative to DE blades (given they're just solo sided) and you have a lot less choice.

Still $USD85 + postage for what I'd say is lil to no advantage over a safety razor is a buy I'll leave to others.

  • Got DE, not the best for me, even with new blade it is not as easy and smoother comparing to the cartridge with the handle that vibrates blades. Not daily shaver with thick and stiff hair, sometimes just use electric on the go. But the blades are cheap tho.

  • A number of beard grooming products also half price at Woolworths

  • Recently picked up a cheap straight razor to do the framing around my beard. This would be a good pickup so I can use the remaining cartridges.

    • +1

      @Hahuh
Just expect a hefty bill when you need to have this sharpened, as it's not something you can do without very specific gear and also skills. If you just wanted to frame around your beard but avoid the costly bills that can come with straights, I'd pick up a cheap shavette razor - it's a 'straight razor' that uses single edge blades (or DE blades broken in half) loaded in to do the cutting. Very common at many barbers. Sell for $10-15 last I checked.

      Purely as an example:
      https://www.amazon.com/Shaving-Factory-factory-straight-barb…

  • I posted the Jack The Barber Double Edge Safety Razer deal last week.

Damn, just my luck, I would have preferred the King C. Gillette when on sale.

What are you guys' opinions comparing the two? Worth buying or not much difference?

FWIW I found a bit of a steal on some very good synthetic knotted shaving brushes - being sold at up to 2/3 discounted off their price.

Have a look as there's limited stock of them - grabbed one myself, well worth doing the same if you have 2 takeaway coffees money free:
