Buying Hail Damaged Written off Car

Hi everyone!

It's my first time buying a car by myself and I'm currently looking at getting a Mazda 3 2019 G20 Pure BP that was written off previously for hail damage, I can't see any dents in the images although I've been informed there is a few minor dents but apart from that the car is in great condition.

The most the owner is willing to go down to is $24,000, the car is automatic and only has about 30,000km on the odometer. Is this a good price or even a good idea to buy as I've seen conflicting opinions on this forum on written off cars?

Tbh if I was buying a WOVR car I'd want to save at least 50%

No and no, and if you have a third question, no.

Harder to sell, harder to insure and worth less to future buyers. There must have been a fair bit of damage to write it off, including possible water incursion. It might look alright, but it's just not worth the risk.

    • Mine wasn't a repairable write off, but close to it.

Huge hail storm came thru seq 2013/4 and smashed up all the car yards.

Picked up a 2013 nissan pulsar for $9,000 ans had 8000kms on the clock.

All i ever did was tyres, oil changes, air/cabin filter, spark plugs x 2. Nissan did put a brand new cvt auto box in it though.

Put 229 00kms on it. Got rid of it last for $550. Could have got more for it but cbf.

According to Redbook, a brand new one in 2019 was $26,240.

And you want to buy one with a written-off record and 30,000km on the clock for $24,000?

Why the hell would someone even consider paying $2K under it's brand new value for a 4 yr old WRITTEN OFF VEHICLE ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Insurance companies May decline insurance, or not insure it for Hail/Weather insurance at their discretion.
Would pay to see if vehicle can indeed be insured?!

Owner has bought the car from Pickles/Manheim for FAR less than $24k, done a PDR (painless dent removal) on the car themselves at home and is now trying to on-sell. The remaining dents are probably ones that are too far gone for PDR (and likely the reason the car was written off instead of being fixed).

If you don't pdr well, you can stretch/crack the paint and this will show itself later in life as the car experiences the elements.

Move onto the next car ad and give this one a wide berth.

I can assure you PDR is not painless…

    • Lol @ painless.

So many red flags here that I really hope op doesn't go through with it.

Imagine buying your first car and you get scammed this hard

    • My first car (that wasn't a hand me down that was older than I was) the engine number didn't match. Bought from a dealer too, they never mentioned it anywhere, documentation was wrong.

I wondered why it seemed a reasonable price, fortunately for me it was rear ended by a drunk and written off (well, the neck pain wasn't fun) so I got paid out that way. But it was a good lesson on not trusting anyone when buying a car, any time a deal smells a little funny you always walk away.

As Dale Kerrigan, a famous second hand merchant, once said; “tell ‘em they’re dreaming…”

  • If it's been written off you can (probably ) only get 3rd part property insurance so if you really write it off like in a bingle or something then you have to pay for the damages yourself.

  • Hell no.

If you buy this car, 100% we will see you make another post, "I regret buying this written off car".

not worth $10k, unless breaking it up for parts

    1. IF it’s only hail damage the rest of the car will be fine.
    2. It will be harder to insure, and if you do get insurance will likely be a complete headache trying to get repairs done if there’s any hail damage within the repair zone
    3. It’s too expensive for a car with WOVR record hanging over it’s head.
    4. If you have to ask if it’s a good price you aren’t ready to buy a car because you haven’t done enough searching to see if the price is comparable to others. Get on carsales and gumtree etc to see what the going advertised rate is to compare.

    No you haven't.

  • Thanks everyone for replying! I've decided to not get the car!

Anyone else feel used when someone posts on a new account and then exits when they have their answer like this? Lol
