Beyerdynamic TYGR 300R Open-Back Gaming Headphones $199 + Delivery @ PC Case Gear

40

These gaming headphones have received fantastic reviews, especially for gaming that require 3 dimensional positional audio. But they have been mostly out of stock in Australia for the last few years. Now PCCaseGear has them on special for what I believe is their lowest price ever. No mic though, so would need to be paired with external mic.

Wouldn't touch PCCG atm, people waiting weeks for orders to ship out, no communication etc.

Really? Does anyone know what is happening? I have used these guys for nearly 20 years and they usually have one of the best serrvice.

I was reading on one of the subreddits that they got bought out by some company in germany or something and they just completely flipped the company on it's head and now it's just awful, few ex-workers were replying not to buy from there anymore from having massive issues etc.

    Just a barely re-tuned DT990.

Pricing is way too close to Sennheiser HD 560S deals to be worth it.

True value of this in today's market is around $130.

    • +3

How are you coming up with this valuation?

      • While obviously not the same, they're at about the same level as the HD 599s in terms of overall sound quality, similar to how the DT770 sits behind the K371 bar imaging.

I get everyone raves about them being a sturdy build with replaceable parts, but take that off the table and they are tonally junk with no real benefits beyond being a reasonably-housed dynamic driver headphone.

When you've got the various models of the HE400SE starting at $130, where the DT990 only wins out on imaging and maybe soundstage width and is behind everywhere else, you're looking at a headphone that's long overdue for a price correction.

But gaming audio is mostly about soundstage and specifically imaging right? Which the TYGRs do very well.

          • @trippy: Not at the expense of all else unless you're grinding every last edge in a competitive first/third person game.

The Beyers are just not designed for modern audio chains, so the treble is way too hot. I would even argue hearing damage is a risk with long term use.

    • Where are the HD560S deals? (Serious question, I’ve been looking for a little while now)

      • It's been slow going in AU for a while, but if you're happy to pay $220ish for an import:

        https://drop.com/buy/sennheiser-hd-560s-headphones

Code 'AUFREE' for free delivery and $10 USD credit from referral would take it to that price. You've also got the option of snagging the HD 6XX for just under $300 via the same mechanism.

        • But the 6XX is useless for positional audio in gaming. Nice midrange though.

          • @trippy: But I don't know what this person is after in a headphone and if they're aware of the 6XX. Nice comment though. :)

Thanks! And you would be right for not assuming, I just need something that is accurate and dead neutral, for a digital piano. Supposedly the 560S are just that.

          • @Afterglow: Piano timbre is often tricky on headphones, but I would suggest depending on the tones you're interested in, either could be a really solid option. 6XX are harder to drive though, with flabbier bass and weak upper treble if they don't get the power from an amp, and sufficient linearity of DAC output that they need.

Bass extension runs lower on the HD 560S, but mid-treble is more problematic. 6XX is a touch more relaxed. Would recommend demoing the 560S, the 600 and the 650 (the 6XX is a 650 in a plastic headband and enclosure), should be able to find somewhere nearish to you.

The only thing I should note is that given you've got 90 minutes to decide, I would probably just get the 6XX regardless because it'll wind up being a headphone you'll listen to for a long time to come. There are few bits of audio gear that anyone will ever recommend to buy without demo, and it's one of that rare list.

  • Been using for over a year, great cans with decent bass for open headphones. These were sold out world wide at that time and people were clamouring to buy them at $300 so $199 seems a bargain to me.

edit I should say since everbody loves comparisons, philips x1 was my old pair and these have less bass but sound much clearer and I can't use the x1 any more.

  • Could anyone recommend a cheaper open back option? Previously had the Sony gold headset from the PS4.

    • +1

HIFIMAN HE400SE (non-Stealth for significantly cheaper) if you're not super concerned about imaging accuracy. Koss KSC75 if you're thinking super cheap. Not aware of any good open back IEMs below this price.

At the same price, you've got the Sennheiser HD 560S on sale, and the HIFIMAN HE400SE Stealth.

  • Why is Beyerdynamic selling a gaming headphone without a microphone?

    • Plenty of people have dedicated microphones. You can get the MX300 if you want a microphone attached. This works well alongside the blue yeti.

  • fwiw, I ordered these at 1am on Monday morning and they arrived Thursday afternoon. Very happy.
