Please Help Me Find a Credit Card

Hi OzBargainers,

I think I need your help to find a credit card.

The situation is that between my wife and I we often run up between $1000 - $2000+ in work expenses which we then need to claim back. My work is pretty quick at processing expense claims however it can take up to 3 or 4 weeks for my wife's place of employment to reimburse us.

The problem with this is that we are constantly a few thousand down on our mortgage offset account.

I'm interested to hear OzBargains thoughts on the best credit card just for the purpose of managing these work expenses. It would be a bonus of it has extra perks such as rewards etc.

Thanks,
Swampy

With expenses that high and regular you should both be asking for a company credit card.

You shouldn't be expected to be personally loaning your employer's thousands of dollars a week.

      THIS x 100 !!

    • I agree and have been complaining for over year to no avail. At least my expenses are approved quickly unlike the wifes.

Where I worked the solution was to say "I spend all my salary on my own crap. I can't afford to carry the company."

    • Agreed but if this cashflow is not an issue…. I'd keep doing it and reap the "free" points

  • Best card for you depends on your circumstances. Have a look at pointshack

If you look just outside cafes, people sometimes drop them there as they carry out their trays of coffee…
Also, near the self service registers at supermarkets.

Honestly jv you must be insufferable to be around in real life. Must be really difficult having an actual conversation with you if you nitpick like this

Drop your credit card outside the cafe before getting a coffee did you?

        • Sounds like it… LOL…

Note if you get a credit card for this purpose, any annual fees are a tax deduction.

    • Thats a good tip. thanks.

That would also make the benefits taxable.

  • You are a major lender to your company and if they've refused to give you a card this far in - it's for a specific reason, this relationship is likely to go tits up and all of a sudden your "few weeks between repayment" will start to take a very long time…

  • If you are able to sustain the cash flow and are interested in earning points for travel, get a high-yielding Qantas points card. You'll be earning points on your employer's coin which is a great fringe benefit. In the good old days I was allowed to purchase airfares on my personal card and claim the expense back. Some companies try to minimise employee cards as they can get stiffed with the liability if a disguntled employee racks up a huge spend then leaves - which has happened

  • Humm90 has 110 days interest free (although it's 110 days from the start of the month, so if you buy on the 31st it's only 79 days). Should give you time to claim back then pay it off. It's $99 a year though.

ANZ is offering a bunch of 0% interest on purchase for a couple of years too at the moment. You could pay the minimum and simply stash the rest in your offset until it's time to pay it all off.

American Express Velocity Escape Card isn't bad if you use velocity points, 55 days interest free (from start of billing period), 0.75 velocity points per dollar and $0 annual fee. Pretty rare to get 55 days, a reward and $0 annual fee in one card.

  • Your employers are taking advantage of you big time… But, you could spin this to your advantage by getting a high points earning credit card each like Amex Qantas Ultimate. Channelling a few k a month through that will give you a couple of decent free airfares a year.

  • Are those figures per month? Just take advantage of bonus point deals and churn cards.

    • Yes for the majority of months.
