How to Safely Do Transaction Online?

I've seen lots of people buying and selling gift cards valued at thousands of dollars through OzB forum. It seems like most of them just do the transaction through online transfer. My questions are:

  1. How do people avoid getting scammed when buying/selling items here?
  2. Who should give out first? Should buyer pay first? Should seller give out the item first?
  3. Does exchanging IDs help avoid scammers?

    As always CASH on collection.

  • cash, or bank to bank always for trail.

I've sold some gift cards on here, generally buyer pays first via bank transfer (since they're hard to reverse). No matter what, there's always risk involved in these transactions on ozbargain — older accounts tend to be more trustworthy, but of course that's not a perfect indicator.

    • Checking if its older account definitely one of the step should be done. Also wondering, have you ever buy anything from Ozb? If that's the case, did you send the money first?

Yes and yes. It's like buying a car; you're not going to get the car first without handing over the money for the car.

    Seems many do get scammed.

It’s quite uncommon to get scammed on the ozbargain classified but it has happened on multiple occasions.

Don't exchange IDs. Doing so opens yourself up to identity theft.

I won't do it in forum. I'll just get them from companies (API, Ambassador, Macquire, NRMA, AGL, Shopback) that sell them.

Forum deals are inherently risky. To reduce risk apply the same logic as you would to Gumtree of FM. ID exchange is a really bad idea. If you're risk appetite isn't great enough for a forum deal, then don't do one. For me, if its <$50 and there were no red flags I'd do it, and if it went balls up, meh. But everyone is different.

I wouldn't be buying thousands of dollars worth of gift vouchers from a random person. If the 'saving' isn't much, then it's not worth the risk of getting scammed. If the 'discount' is too much, then you've got to wonder why they're selling it so cheap.

Much less risk and stress to just get it through a legitimate channel.
