Ring doorbell is 2nd gen not 3rd.

    • what works without a subscription?

      • +1

Yes, but without smart detection or cloud recording.

      • +4

Aldi have video doorbells from today for $89 that don't need subscriptions.
No idea if they're any good, but their return policy is.

        • Bought one, haven't installed nor unpacked yet. Any one has a feedback? Mainly bought cause return policy in case it's sh!t

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: I did, the battery seems very poor, exhausted in 48 hrs (for me) May be I have activated motion sensor that drained the battery.

    • The first impression is the Ring Doorbell is first gen. But upon scrolling down to the details of the bundle, it clearly says it's gen 2.

Obligatory reminder ring requires subscription. Legitimately surprised it’s 2023 and many still don’t know.

  • Requires subscription. Echo show 5 can now show the live feed from the doorbell if someone is detected by the doorbell.

    • Only if you want recordings saved in their cloud, I think, but you can answer the door from phone without it. Right?
I have the older ring but also have a subscription so can’t check.

      • +1

        Yeah that's correct

  • wouldn't you want a chime to go with it too, or does the echo show make a sound when someone rings the bell?

    • Echo show can announce the motion detection.

      • +2

And set the dogs off barking haha

    • +2

All echo devices can act as a chime for doorbell press and echo devices with screens can announce doorbell press and/or motion detection and act as a video phone.

  • +1

you only need to subscription to view recordings etc? Still works as a video door bell without it?

    • Correct.

    • +2

Just to reiterate, without the sub, you can only see in real time.

For instance, if you get a package left at your doorstep, and god forbid someone stole that package.
If you weren't watching the doorbell at that specific time and recording (with your phone function, not through the ring doorbell app, as they don't allow this without a sub) at that specific time, you're stuffed.

Pretty integral feature that is blocked by a paywall.

      • +2

Have a ring doorbell and sub. Two people in Adidas tracksuits came to my front door and took my stuff. Gave the video recordings to the police over a year ago. Guess what happened? Nothing!

        • +2

Did you try calling Adidas for reimbursement?

        • Best value ozbargain response? Bikies!

        • Bike was stolen 3rd floor in garage building, can't go in or out without fob, lock was cut. There are CCTV everywhere, they didn't even bother coming and picking up the footage.

        • +1

Police are mostly useless in Victoria. They wont let you defend yourself and wont defend you if the need be. They are very good at giving tickets. At the same time people should not break traffic laws anyways. They dont have time for regular people helping them or anything.

  • +3

Someone hack this with custom firmware so we can record to our own cloud service of choice please.

    Anyone?

I'm not talented enough to achieve this myself.

    Kickstarter maybe… I'd donate, I believe!

    • +1

It's a pity ring doesn't support RTSP, or you could use zone minder, an open source software using the real-time streaming protocol and google drive

    • +2

How much you going to contribute? $2
Just pay for the subscription 🤷
Only $50 per year, thats like less than $5 per month.
Even with the custom firmware, you probably need to spend money on server, then you will lose all the AI features.

    • There’s a scrypted plugin for portainer that allows it to use HomeKit secure video that you can record to your own media. I found the time it recorded on motion detection too short and couldn’t change it so I stopped using it, but it’s there if you’re a bit technical.

    • +1

Sadly it’s very hard to do, Amazon has locked it down pretty well. If only we could side load an app on the bloody thing, hell I’d even take decent ttl access.

When australian government does care about information going on cloud why should you 🤣🤣😅

    Waiting for Eufy doorbell deals!

  • We have this doorbell with 4x echo dots spread across our 2 story house. When someone presses the doorbell, the automation I have setup on the Alexa app increase the volume and uses the echo Dots as chimes. Total upfront investment $200 (got the echo dots for $19ea with prime day. Recurring charge $50 for ring subscription.

    • +1

      $50 per year sub?

    • +1

I have also set my cameras notifications up so they will illuminate Philips Hue bulbs such as my beside lamp, computer desk lamp etc different colours for 60 seconds depending on which camera detected the motion. So red light for the front, orange for the back camera etc.

Really useful when phone is on silent, or i have headphones on etc. And a live thumbnail comes up on both TV's when motions detected.

      • +1

How did you setup the TV thumbnail? We have a Samsung smart frame TV with Alexa and Google home.

  • +2

So if someone pressed the doorbell will the video feed show up on the echo automatically? And if so does this require a subscription (I don’t need or want to record or save the footage in the cloud)

    • Yes, and No

    • Without Subscription.
Nothing is saved… Just a live feed.

      With a Subscription.
Video and data saved to cloud. Don't forget to read the T&Cs VERY carefully. Very clever writing to get around privacy laws, but you do end up assigning Ring.com the rights to the video and data.

There are better options around, but if you couldn't care less, then go for this.

      • "(I don’t need or want to record or save the footage in the cloud)"

      • What are the better options? I'm genuinely trying to scope out a door bell + a camera system for the home.

  • +1

Anyone had their video doorbell stolen?

    • I know there is a market for those magnetic sticking cams lol . Real easy pickings for thieves.

      • Wouldn't the theft be uploaded to the cloud just before it is disconnected from power?

        • Only if you have a subscription.

          • @Marty131: I have the subscription on my Wyze cameras. If someone is going to steal it then I at least want to see it happen.

    • +2

Pretty sure ring replaces them. They cant be used by a thief

      • +1

Yes I had some idiot steal my doorbell 2. Filed a police report and she is known to them. Also stole my neighbours bike. Ring disable the camera so it's a brick and replace with a police report.

I am holding out for Aqara - releasing tomorrow

    • Chinese product?

      • Aqara,
One of the members of Xiaomi ecological chain,Specializing in the production of smart home products.

        • Ok Chinese product. Thank you

    • NAS support, nice.

      Subscriotiin needed?

      • +1

If you are saving video on Aqara cloud then you will need a subscription. I will be using iCloud sub from Turkey for HomeKit Secure Video. There is also local storage option on Chime for up to 512GB SD card. NAS support is yet to be released I think.

More info and specs on this website

    • Did you buy ?

  • Is their local storage?

  • +1

I've been using Wyze cam 3 and it's fine, but the frame rate and resolution is so low that I'd be embarrassed to share any of the videos if it caught something cool. And detection is not great, constantly picks up my cat as a person. The subscription fee for detection is cheap though. But I bet once their AI starts detecting accurately they will jack the price up…

  • I have both and like it.

And yes, i pay a subscription for it. About $40 a year i think. But the peace of mind is great.

  • Thoughts on this versus the new wired Google nest door bell which I can import from America?

  • Isn’t security camera with movement detection at door do all stuff without installing a door bell ?

    • I can confirm it does if it's an active deterrence camera. You can even have 2-way communication with it. Gives notifications on your mobile for intrusion/trip wire, the works but it's definitely more expensive than a door bell.

  • +3

I don’t use video door bell any more. Most people coming at the front door don’t like to stand in front of a camera, some try to block the lens, others press and stand aside or turn their back, so it became useless.

    • +1

In that case you could use the ring to answer with your voice to ask who it is, or not answer it at all, which are both safer options than answering the door blindly to someone who doesn’t want to be identified

      • They leave quicker than you can respond they drop goods then back to car or van. They don't waste time to talk to you as that defeats the purpose. They get paid on volume. Talking to households has no value. Time is money for them.

This is the world we live in

The random strangers are usually people who want to sell you something and get on to religious stuff

    • So a security camera mounted higher enough cannot be avoided. Coupled with good old doorbell seems to better solution in my eyes

    • 100% agree. And what I wrote is also 100% correct there's a reason these things are on half price they can't move the stock. Nobody press the door bell and if so they don't stand and wait for you to see them the only exception is uber eats but some of them leave the food out the door anyway

  • -1

If each time someone knocks at the door, I have to ask who is it first, this is something that has never crossed my mind. We buy quite a bit from Amazon, my son often orders food. I'ts ok with me, I refuse to live in fear. Thanks for the advice, all good.

    • I agree with you and dunno why people negged you

  • I still don't get the deal with smart doorbell. The courier or postman does not press the bell anymore…your doorbell camera is small and short range

If they do press doorbell they won't wait for you they drop the parcel and run back to the van and leave.

If you want motion sensor video recording then get a floodlight or security camera You Do not need a smart doorbell…

The only exception is you live in an apartment, but your postman likely will just card you instead of delivering the goods to your door. They are not gonna find your unit with hundreds of others. So it defeats the purpose. Otherwise your apartment has a mail room and you can't install this as strata will not let you. So there you have it

    • +1

I have a hikvision video doorbell and in the three years i have had it i think maybe 7 people have used it when knocking. Luckily my other cameras see all..i guess you are correct

      • Thanks for your positive comments. Maybe you can rectify the neg on my post.
