Whose Responsibility Is It to Stack The Airport Security Trays? Yours, or The Airport Staff's?

At the airport, must you really stack your own tray when you finish going through security?

This is the ultimate personality test.

Whose Responsibility Is It to Stash The Airport Security Trays?

    Why stash them?

    • Updated. I mean Stack :)

Ultimate personality test :) whatever it means. I'll stack them if there is a stack but most likely the officer is the one take them to make sure they are empty

  • +3

No because the onus is on them to perform their security theatre and you have to follow their rules of taking things out of your pockets, bags, etc

Different from returning trolleys at the supermarket because in this case, you decided you wanted one

What else you going to do with it? take it as carry-on?

Airport staff, isn't it? Imagine if everyone puts back the trays, wouldn't the line at security checks be even longer? After I go through the security checkpoint, I am scrambling to put my stuff away back in my bag. Doesn't it make more sense for the airport staff to do it to help move the line along faster while I put my stuff back in my bag? Or does that sound too unreasonable?

    Context of OP's post -

    'Rude' airport act sparks debate

    First-world problem much?

  • I do wot I want

I grab my belongings and go. After I've all but turned my belongings inside out, I've got more than enough to do without stacking trays.

  • +1

Grab and go. Staff are usually waiting to take the trays away and I don't have enough hands!

  • I’ve never been on a plane that involved airport security so have no idea what you’re talking about.

More importantly, who the F repacks their bag and sorts out all their stuff at the end of the converyer belt instead of walking over to where the chairs and tables are for this?! It infuriates me people who are oblivious to what is going on around them or just don't care that they are inconveniencing everyone else. Don't get me started on the absolute morons that feel they need to stand as close to the baggage carousels as possible instead of a meter back so anyone can move forward to get their bag. Just a simple idiot test imo. Yes, I travel too much :(

    • Depends how much stuff you have loose in the tray I guess. I make a point of putting everything from my pockets into my bag and just taking the laptop or 2 out for the scanners. Otherwise you have keys, wallet, phone, belt, maybe coins, jewellery (not me) etc etc floating in a tray and you want to make sure it's all accounted for.

I always stack empty trays while I wait for my bags to scan. It's really not much effort. Often the random security officer is the one stacking so are usually busy with their swab going through someone's bag.

If the customs people are polite, ill do it. If they are rude, then they do it themselves. It really is that simple

  • I grab my belongings and go, but if they want to take selfie with me or asked for autographs I'll stay for a bit.
But seriously, out of courtesy I'll just put those trays away myself.

  • Whatever seems appropriate at the time, there is no hard and fast rule.

    same goes for
    - throwing away your rubbish and returning trays at food courts
    - returning trolleys to an actual trolley bay
    - putting the clothes back on the rack after trying them
    - folding clothes back to how you found them when looking at them in stores
    - returning items to the shelf at a supermarket if you decide 3 isles later you don't need it,

    • There's a dude at my gym who thinks that he doesn't need to put his equipment away because that's what he pays his gym membership for- for staff to pick up after him.

      • Next time he does it, tell him the weights are not going to lift themselves, put it back on the wrack for others to use.

        • Imagine that conversation when the dude is a paper cut away from bleeding out, after his weight session

I don't think you have to. Much like you not having to put the trolley back or a basket back at the supermarket. But I think it's polite, helps others and takes a minute bit of effort.

  • This is the bestest and mostest importantest question I have read on the internet this year :-)

  • I stack my tray, and the left over trays of other travellers as well. It encourages the crowd to move down away from the security scanner, the security staff appreciate it (they have enough shit to deal with, especially attitude from other travellers), and there is more space for everyone's belongings.

Everything has a flow on effect. It's a simple gesture.
