Tracking Location with Apple Watch

My partner plans on getting an Apple Watch SE and is deciding whether she needs cellular. Her main use is with running (and wants to leave her phone at home) and she wants to share her location with me when she's out early/late in the day. Can she share her location with me without the Apple Watch being connected to cellular?

If she leaves her phone at home how will her Apple Watch give you live updates on her location without cellular internet? And why does she want you to be able to track her anyway.

    • +1

Maybe just for a the peace of mind of knowing that she feels safer knowing her partner can see her whereabouts when it's getting dark/early in the morning?

      • +1

Maybe it's an abusive relationship and one is deeply controlling of the other?

Sorry, I thought I was on /r/relationshipadvice for a moment there.
        I think you're right.

View a friend’s location with Apple Watch

The Find People app is a great way to find people who are important to you and share your location with them. If friends and family members use iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch SE, or Apple Watch Series 4 or later, and share their locations with you, they appear on a map, so you can quickly see where they are. You can set notifications to alert you when friends or family members leave from or arrive at various locations. See the iPhone User Guide for information about setting up the Find My app on your iPhone.

    • All of which you have stated above is rendered useless without a cellular connection if OP's partner plans to leave their paired iPhone behind.

      • Fair point. I misread the post to say they do have cellular.

  • She will either need an eSIM for her cellular Apple Watch or to take her phone with her, 1 of those 2 options.

    • Or goto a place with wifi that the watch can connect onto.

Why does anyone need a watch to count their exercise ?

Is her life a spreadsheet where she needs to count and account for everything.

What next are you going to count how much time you spend with your kids, and how many words you speak to them ?

Nobody needs a smart watch, just go out and enjoy. If you cant do that then theres something wrong with your lifestyle.

    • count how much time you spend with your kids, and how many words you speak to them

genius, do you mind if I patent that?

    • +4

Not true, many folks find the watch makes exercise more fun and like the accountability and the live data.

**** Not everyone is like you. People are different to you and are motivated in different ways to you. ****

      • -4

        Accountability to whom ?

Why does everything you do have to be a spreadsheet ?

THis is starting to sound more and more like a job…

        • +3

The Apple Watch doesn't produce spreadsheets, so there's your first problem.

Many people like to track their exercise routine and their progress over weeks/months.

It's not for you, that's fine! But this "holier than thou" patronising attitude isn't helpful.

Let people do what they want.

          • -1

@Flying Ace: I never claimed that it did produce spreadsheet, feel free to quote where i said that.

I simply questioned the need to count everything as if one was producing a spreadsheet.

            Patronising ?

Are you by chance crying because you cant accept the basic truth i have stated ? Im simply the doctor pointing out that you are sick.

          • -1

@Flying Ace: Look at the strange words used to reply to me, Accounta bility ? Is that not the same sort of language that someone who uses spreadsheets all day trying to make figures line up and all that ?

Thats precisely my point, the people replying are already brainwashed and are thinking olike accountants and spreadsheets and thats my point.

            • +3

@CowFrogHorse: The problem is you're using your low education brain as a filter through which to see the world. If you don't know what the word "accountability" means and you hear someone use it in a sentence, of course you're going to think "it's about accountants and spreadsheets", because that's what someone who doesn't know what the word means would think.

Note that the way to fix the problem isn't anything to do with what everyone else in the world is doing, it's a problem with you (in this instance, not knowing what a word means).

In that way it's exactly the same as all the other 'problems' you've mentioned on here. Everyone else is doing fine; you can't just process simple concepts and don't have the ability to look inwards. You should at least be getting that basic stuff right before you try to convince us you have a handle on some world 'truths'.

Now go and look the word up.

              • @CrowReally: So please be gracious and explain what accountability in this context means ?

Who exactly are they tallying these figures for and why does it matter that it is recorded ?

              • @CrowReally: So much insults and ZERO actual kindness in explaining WHAT the word actually means.

I hope you dont speak like that to anyone asking for help be it an adult or little kid.

Shame on you for wasting all that effort insulting instead of helping.

                • +3

@CowFrogHorse: You're an adult, with access to the Internet (and Google, as an example). Why don't you "help yourself" like a big boy?

I'm not going to spoonfeed you words you should have learned a long time ago. For starters, I would be here for a very long time. And it's not my job to improve your life. The fact you're resisting doing that yourself speaks volumes about your own capability.

Take some responsibility for your own ignorance - if you don't want to look up the word, fine, but 'own' being the sort of person who doesn't know what words mean and gets confused during basic conversations.

                  • -2

@CrowReally: crow: You're an adult, with access to the Internet (and Google, as an example). Why don't you "help yourself" like a big boy?

                    cow: Typical loser.

So why do you have time to write insults but ZERO time to actually share knoweldge ?

The problem is you dont know how to read, and you are dishonest and invent lies about what people said.

You refuse to define what accountability means in the above replies from our friend because you cant dispute with my original statement.

The only skills you have are to call people names and it shows just look at your replies here.

It also shows that you dont have any human kindness because you refuse to help but you have time to share your dirty mouth.

                  • @CrowReally: So its your job to write insults to people when you cant answer a question put to you ?

                    • +2

@CowFrogHorse: If someone had the arrogance to lecture me on lifestyle choices and how the world works and then tripped up over basic words and asked me to explain to them what the words meant like they were a five year old (and roll that in with the laziness/lack of initiative to go away and look up the meaning themselves), then

                      1. I'd immediately discount the value of their advice (given they have a child's brain)
                      2. I'd point this out to them in an unkind way (the rebuke punishes their aforementioned arrogance)
                      3. I'd make myself a coffee to sip while I did it (because coffee is adult juice that we sip when we have big boy thoughts).
                      • @CrowReally: crow: If someone had the arrogance

cow: so free speech is arrogant ?

Do you want to shoot me because i raise a harmless question ?

                        ~

crow: d then tripped up over basic words and asked me to explain to them what the words meant

cow: Im not tripped, im just asking why use such a strange word and also the need to "count" anything when exercise.

You are just a simpleton and cant grasp this concept ,ALL you see are words, you cant grasp the BIGGER picture because you dont have the skills to do so.

LIke i said before why cant you actually answer my question ? Simple answer is YOU CANT. The only thing you can do is insult people which is what you are doing yet again.

                        ~

crow: (and roll that in with the laziness/lack of initiative to go away and look up the meaning themselves), then

cow: I didnt ask for the meaning of the word, i asked why use the word HERE.

The whole piurpose of the apple watch in this context is to COUNT, accounting means to COUNT things. So im asking why does one need to COUNT when exercise ?

I think you need to go back to school or ask a grown up what accounting means and why it is done, and ask yourself why is this necessary for exercising…

cow: Big boy thoughts like ?

All your replies are full of invented lies and insults.

Being an adult is a bit more than drinking a coffee, any fool can drink coffee, just look at the mirror. How about you conductor yourself like an adult and actually reply to the question that was asked or show some grace and be quite.

Secondly you dont actually know how to read, you keep inventing ideas and statements that i have never made. LEARN TO QUOTE before you write a reply …thats how big boys write, they quote when they reply or challenge a statement. They dont go off on a diatribute with invented lies.

Those damned kids better keep off my lawn

    • I use it for training. A fitness watch/smart watch can provide advanced metrics to see where you can improve on each run. Eg: Running cadence, elevation, heart rate, etc. No need for spreadsheets, all provided in a report after your workout.

      • Yes i know what they can do - im asking why does it matter ?

Im not discussing a literal spreadsheet - im questioning WHY does anyone have to count these things ?

Personally i think its sad that people need to turn every activity, even those in their own time into an a virtual spreadsheet where they count every single detail of their life. What next, are you going to carry a stop watch so you dont spend too much time talking to your kids ?

        • It was answered, used for training. That's the only tracking I do.

          • @dtxau: Yes i am aware it was used for training.

I asked why is there a need to COUNT all these statistics for training ?

Im going to guess you are not a professional sports person, so again why does a personal exercise require collecting all these stats ?

            Why does it matter ?

            • @CowFrogHorse: There are goals and milestones I like to meet, like a sub 3 hour marathon or a qualifying time for a Boston Marathon. You don't need to be a professional athlete to need a watch to keep track for training purposes.

Why do I do it? I just want to see how far I can go in my running career before I switch to something else like cycling. Then the watch will be used to track the training and improvements along the way.

Please stop judging others, it's okay to be different) and all you get is sprayed in warm piss while they go on about how everyone's missing the point and nothing makes sense and it's everyone else's fault and why doesn't anyone get it and what does this mean and why do people do things and why are the things all wrong etc etc etc

The watch without cellular is only able to deliver live location data when the iPhone is nearby. If the iPhone is left at home while running it will not be able to deliver live location data during that time unless cellular is available. In the second case presumably while they are out late they will also have their iPhone with them. However in this situation the phone would also be able to deliver live location data on its own (the phone knows its location) - so the watch isn't required in this case. If your partner (and you) already have an iPhone now you can get them to share their live location with you in the Find My app without the watch,

Source : I have a watch that has cellular but it isn't enabled. It hasn't been a problem as I always also have my phone with me.

Thanks everyone. Next thing to mull over is whether it's worth moving from an affordable 365-day phone plan to a hefty monthly plan ongoing just to get a watch plan…
