iPhone Doesn't Ring, on Incoming Call? Can't Find a Reason

I'm helping an elderly friend with her iPhone. I'm android, so not familiar.

I looked at the settings and it "seems" it's on. I touch the ringtone & it rings. Nothing seems to show anything muted.

I think it's an iPhone 11 (sorry, I left and forgot to check the exact model).

She also has an Apple watch. I have no idea if that could be part of it.

Ideas?

Thank you.

I don't use an iPhone either, but is the silent switch on the side of the phone toggled on?

Anything in the Accessibility settings or something similar?

Check Do Not Disturb: Settings | Focus

If you have an Apple Watch on and connected then I think by default the watch will keep tapping you on the wrist while it rings. There's no reason for it to ring when you have the Watch on, though I think you can set it to ring still if you really want. I don't even remember what my ringtone is because I always have my Watch on.

Not sure why there was a downvote, but this is a highly likely reason. I recently fixed the same for my in-law after trying EVERYTHING people suggested here without any luck. Our reason was - Bluetooth was enabled, Apple Watch was selected as a connected device there, and Do Not Disturb was selected on Apple Watch. Without any idea how to fix this highly convoluted setup (why on Earth do people have yet another distraction on their hands?), I simply turned off Bluetooth and iPhone started ringing again. Hope this helps.

If they don’t have your number saved, it could be Silence Unknown Callers setting (under Settings > Phone).

Yep, that was happening to me and I've been an iPhone user for years. I selected Silence Unknown Callers "Settings -Phone - Silence Unknown Callers'. It is a good option to have, but, I was missing a lot of calls from Schools, Stores etc which were genuine. Any call I got went straight to answerphone and I got a 'Missed Call' symbol under my phone banner. So I've just deselected it and do it manually now.

I rang while I was there, on my mobile to hers. I'm in her contact list. It didn't ring. I went to the typical settings for ringtone and it's there & on. I changed ringtone just to see, it plays, but still doesn't ring. I see nothing muted in every setting.

I thought of the watch (thanks Austria), so will check later.

This is a 91 yr young woman whose children are close enough to visit but don't, but who told her to move to Apple because they use it, but never helped her (a lifelong MS user!). I'll keep watching this thread and will try the suggestions this weekend.

    Thank you so much.

      You're a good person.

      • Thank you. I help a lot of elderly whose children live near, but do nothing but wait to get what they can later. It's very sad. :(

Have you check the physical silent button that is on the side with volume button, that you can flick up and down. That’s the most likely cause

  • Try turning off the Do not disturb setting.
Try turning Airplane mode on and then off.
    Restart?

I remember I had this issue with one of my iPhones back in the day when they had headphone jacks (haven't gone back to iPhones since 6S). Cleaning the headphone jack area fixed the issue. I guess the phone thought there was a headphone plugged in

Take the phone to the Apple store to have them help

  • I had similar problem with my iPhone 13, go to settings->Sounds and haptics -> then turn on Change with buttons option, so now you can control the volume of the ringtone. After you turn on the option increase your mobile volume and try, It should work

  • Settings > Phone > blocked contacts

Does it play music? ie. is the speaker/s toast?

As the first post, check the 'silent' flick switch on the side of the phone. That's what it will be.

  • Make sure it's not connected to anything bluetooth. At 91 she might have hearing aids connected to it?

  • Thank you, everyone. I was embroiled in the Telstra nightmare and this came up as I was leaving the other day. I have to go back and check, in person.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions, it is very appreciated. You're helping a 91 yr old widow whose husband died of dementia and she went on to earn her caring cert at 78. She cared for others younger than herself until her own health issues overcame her. In the years following, and after so many doctors, they've denied her access to fix her pain (agism). Good on ya arsehole AU gov't. YOU SUCK.

    Thank you
