  • I don’t want to side track this deal, but.. does anybody know what might best suit me? I’ve searched online but I’m not sure - I drink mainly decaf, but also have normal in the morning. Would a capsule machine or an actual coffee machine be better? I ask because I imagine that I’d have to cleanse the normal machine to have decaf if I’ve used it for normal coffee? Is that so? Thanks so much if anybody has any thoughts. 😀

No cleaning (minimum at best) required for coffee machine, but you might need 2 grinders for different beans….

Or you can use single does bean container for the grinder then you would only have a franction of caffeine left in your decaf shot.

Eventually, weather or not going to a grinder+ coffee machine/ pod machine is up to you ( if you can tell the difference/ care about the difference) : I have used both, LOR pod machine and this coffee machine from this deal. fresh ground coffee is much better but it's also much more complicated than a pod one.

      • Thank you so much for your advice. I’ve heard that too, I think I’ll look into a ground coffee one then.

Decaf still has around 3% caffeine in it, I don't think a few stray grounds from a grinder or whatever residual is on the machine is going to be a big deal. An empty flush shot on an espresso machine like this is all you'd need between shots (and you should be doing that anyway).
Ideally, as HD9990 has said you'd probably have 2 grinders to avoid having to reset each time for different beans and have both dialled in to get the most out of them (and avoid the stray caffeinated grounds entering your decaf shot). But that's a big expense for decent grinders.

I make a single decaf for my wife using the same grinder as normal though, and she thinks its fine. But to get the best out if it you might need to adjust the grind setting between caf/decaf shots which can be a pain, as the beans will be different roast and age.

      • Thank you for your super helpful and detailed response. It sounds like I’m worrying about nothing then. I’d prefer ground coffee because it seems like it tastes a lot better. I’ll look into something fairly cheap that can do ground.

The grinder I use is always empty, and only put in what I am about to grind for the next shot.
I have decaf, often have a few with a mix of decaf and regular beans, and always do regular for guests (unless they expressly ask for decaf).
Everything gets done as a single dose through the grinder (I am using a DF64, but did this previously on a Breville smart grinder pro), worked fine.

      • Thank you so much for sharing your experience, from what the other really helpful posters are saying ground coffee is the way to go. I’m quite relieved because I honestly thought I’d be stuck using a pod machine, which I’ve heard aren’t the best.

Seem to be price matching Myer.

  • Showing as $769 for me?

    • And Myer now shoing as $783.20. Hmmmm

      • Odd it changes back to $587.40 in the cart…

  • The reviews ain't that great. Keep searching for me.

    • It's a bit late since this deal is expired, but I got one of these last year from the Big W deal, and it's excellent. Have bought and sold a few espresso machines over the past few years trying to find a keeper, and this is it. Much better than the Gaggia Classic Pro (IMO) which was my previous machine. I was here to buy a second one for my MiL!

      • Much better than the Gaggia Classic Pro

Really? That's interesting. Was thinking of upgrading my dedica at some point to the Gaggia, but maybe I should look at this instead. What makes this one better?

Though I still like the idea of the Gaggiunio mod option.

        • +1

From someone with a fully modded Gaggia pro.

6 Months ago I would have said go nuts the end results are great and i love my machine. but.

your looking at $600 for the machine $300 PID your going to want a lower level drip tray and probs get rid of the horrible milk knob $100 new spring $25 once you factor shipping your really looking at a $1200 machine with no warranty and a good amount of mucking around to get it there.

If I was buying now id just Profitec GO, if you can snag one at around $1600 ($400 more than the Gaggiunio mod option IMO it's a much better package. My 2 cents.

          • @JimJamz: Cheers. That was also on my list of potential upgrades along with the ECM Classika – PID.

But if this is dual boiler and also does a good job for $600, I wonder if I should reconsider.

But the Dedica also doesn't seem close to dying after more than 5 years of work, and still makes decent coffee. I just know it can be a bit better…

        • +1

Yeah, if you're happy to mod then the Gaggia is potentially a better option? I find this Sunbeam to be 100% consistent (unlike the gaggia), and quicker to heat up

      • Does your Espresso gauge hit the green optimal area? I find that no matter what I do, it only ever goes up to about two notches below it and I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if the gauge is just not reliable.

        • How fine is your grind? It might not be fine enough to provide enough resistance for the machine to get up to pressure. Just guessing though, as I don't have the machine. How long does a ~35g shot take to make with ~18g of coffee?
If it takes less than 20-25 seconds you're probably grinding too coarse.

        • +1

Yep, is always in the middle of the optimal area. Just need to adjust grind so that it hits that. I use 18g coffee in, 38g coffee out in 28 seconds. Comes out exactly the same very time

  • Anyone have, or know where to buy a cheap 58mm group handle / portafilter?

I picked up a Sunbeam Barista Max in hard rubbish. Easy o ring fix, but it doesnt have the handle or tamp.

  • No grinder no need no advice

  • I also have one of these from the big w sale and it's paired with a specialita mignon grinder. With the right beans, this combo easily surpasses most if not all of the places I've bought coffee since. No complaints at all.

  • I have the model prior to this. It looks to be the same internally though this has a fancier finish.

Makes excellent coffee and has proved quite reliable over time.

  • I have one of these and it’s been fantastic. Makes good coffee consistently. However, I can’t for the life of me work out how to descale it. The process in the manual does not work. Breville updated the manual with a new process that I cannot get to work either. A google search reveals this is a known problem. If anyone has the descaling process, please do me a favour and share your it.
