What Is The Cheapest Way to Buy an iPhone for My Mum?

Our son dropped my Mum's iPhone 12 512GB into water and it's not worth repairing it.

What is the cheapest way to get an iPhone with AppleCare+, so that it will not happen again?

Many Thanks.

so that it will not happen again?

Get your son to buy it.

    • What if OPs son is 5 years old and it was in fact OPs mothers fault for letting a child touch the phone?

      • IOU / Debt from family bank.

        • Send him to the salt mine
          .

He is only 9 years old. He got 93 dollars from doing housework. He is contributing for this phone of course.

  • Sign her up to an iPhone mobile plan on her bday. She won’t get mad.

    • She said I will have to sign up the plan myself…

so that it will not happen again

Remove the water from your property. No more mosquitos & no more phone dropping. Win-win.

They are IP68 rated, something smells dodgy with this story :/

    • Maybe cracked screen/back and dropped into water.

      Maybe toilet water…diarrhoea water?

      • Then the person that cracked the screen broke the IP rating and is at fault for the damage ;)

        • In any case, op wasn't asking who's fault it was. Op is asking how to get a cheaper iPhone ;)

Dropped into the washing machine with laundry liquid.
Not sure whose fault, just want to resolve this issue.

So it went through a washing machine cycle?

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: No, Mum found it in washing machine in about 40mins. Our son was too afraid to tell her.

        • Sounds like your mum put it in the washing and is blaming your son just to get a free new iPhone.

          • @onetwothreefour: Our son said he accidentally did it. The phone was still working when it was out of the water. We turned it off, waited it to be dry. Not turning on anymore.

              @jiaqi518: Charge it up

              • @GOMOOTYPRO: Yes, we did that and took it to the apple store. We were told it is water damaged. Apparently laundry liquid can make much more damage than water.

insurance so that it will not happen again?

Look up the term "moral hazard". Your desire for this will result in a very high premium, making it not worthwhile.

    • My mum didn't get AppleCare+ when she got the phone, therefore thinking of getting AppleCare+ this time.

      • I see Apple understands moral hazard. FYI per event/incident:

        Service fees at a glance
        Incidents covered
        Screen or back glass5 damage:
        A$45
        Other accidental damage
        A$149
        Theft or loss
        A$229

Yes, much affordable for fixing. Apple store recommended to purchase Apple Care+ .

          • @jiaqi518: I would say, put it inside of rice, wait it for 2 weeks or longer .. then your mom's phone will be fine

            • +1

@ivyholmes: have to open her up to clean the residue off and make sure no shorts. not hard to do on an iphone 12.

The iPhone 12 is water-resistant. It has a rating of “IP68” which means it's fully protected from dust and can handle being underwater for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 6 meters. If your phone gets dropped in a puddle, or a shallow pool, or gets wet from the rain, it will be just fine.

    • Maybe laundry liquid is a different story. Apple store in Chatswood said it is water demaged.

You could wait until the next Telstra day, it might feature Apple/iPhone sales this time.

Other option is refurbished iPhones. There’s a few reputable refurb sellers and usually with the monthly eBay codes you can get a further discount. Check the recent thread on iPhones to see the sellers.

Or if you want brand new, if you can access discount gift cards for say JB HI-FI, you could get a discount on a new model that way.

Isn't it supposed to be waterproof? https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT207043

I bought a second hand iphone on Reebelo and it was affordable and straighforward https://reebelo.com.au/collections/apple-iphone?sort=best-se…

Sorry I can’t help with pointing you to the cheapest option, but if AppleCare is a must then you either need to purchase a new iPhone and activate AppleCare or purchase a used one that already has it active. The former is probably more likely to happen.

Go to JB Hi-Fi and get on a plan that’s cheaper then Telstra with a gift card, buy the phone outright with JB mobile extras phone insurance.

stealing is free, but i don't recommend.

  • Have you considered a refurbished iPhone? Apple sells them, so does Coles and Boost Mobile

    • When did apple start selling refurb iPhones in Australia? I’ve only ever seen other sellers with refurb iPhones
