    Use wax same result?

    • +2

This is a swirl remover. It is part of the paint correction stage of detailing. Wax is one of the final steps.

Any recommendations to hide small chips?

    Few mm in size

The joins in the seat cushions, or just use a vacuum.

A respray by a professional. No amount of DIY products will get a good result. If you just want to do a quick fix then try rubbing a crayon into the chip to fill it up with wax

    • last detailer did a couple of these on my car with tiny dab of matched paint. I'd say it wasn't a great improvement because the dab was a fair bit bigger than the chip.

I did a larger scrape with matched paint, and while you can still see it if you look close, it was a big improvement over the bumper black plastic showing through.

This will only work on swirls. I'm imagining a car park scratch is deeper than swirl marks from dust. May need cutting compound instead. Trust me, I've been through various Maguire's and other products to try to fix different levels of scratches

I've never figured out the difference between scratch remover, paint cleaner and polishing compound. Care to shed some light?

      • +5

Oh some car cleaning snobs will probably jump all over this but they all kind of work towards removing a thin layer of stuff from the surface of your paint to make it smooth. Cleaner removes contaminants mostly whilst leaving the paint as untouched as possible. Polish removes a layer indiscriminately to level out the paint and make it shiny like a mirror. Scratch remover is similar to polish and you could argue that polish does the same thing. Different polishes and scratch removers work more or less aggressively. If you can feel the scratch with your fingernails then it's most likely too deep to correct fully without risking worse damage. You can mostly just lessen the visual impact but not fully correct it without filling the scratch. Oh some scratch removers actually fill the scratch similar to what a wax will do. But they wear off over time

        • I think you summed that up well. I have done a lot of "paint restoration" and scratch removal over the years. Yes, the only way to "remove" a scratch is by removing the paint that surrounds it to make it less obvious. So it's a matter of how aggressive you want to get. Depending on scratch depth, I would use:

          (0) extremely fine sand paper (as a first step prior to the subsequent step), if the scratch is very deep
          (1) scratch remover (I love this stuff and removed nasty scratches/damage with it. Comes with a filling compound, but as @julz said, it may wear off a little. Tiny bottle has lasted me for a long time)
          (2) cut and polish (which I think the product in this deal is like), if the scratches are very fine only, or if you're doing an entire car with dull paint. Be careful - it can remove enough paint on edges to make it bare. And never use in full sun or allow to dry too long.

    • The scratch is in the clear coat, lets hope it works. 15cm by 5mm…

I have been stalking the prices as I am skeptical on these products. So the cheaper it is, I wont feel as bad.

May i ask what is the cutting compound you suggest so i can bookmark it

      • I have used only Meguiar's Ultimate Compound before, seems to work well enough.

      • +1

if it's just clear coat it should work, there is a quick way to figure out if it's just clear coat scratch or its deeper

  • Tried it before. Works well enough for minor scratches.

  • I have used this product, works great on fine scratches/scuffs with the required amount of elbow grease - I wouldn't hesitate recommending.

Great for door handles where someone with a ring uses

    title should say 'Sparesbox'

  • I have a lot of detailing products and am pleased to say that this stuff actually works.

You need to be realistic with your expectations though

I stupidly wiped the windshield with a scotch sponge and left lots of scratches. Is it repairable or do I have to replace it?

  • how well this product works depends on your skill and patience but mostly how deep the scratch is. rule of thumb is, if your fingernail catches on it, this won't make it disappear completely. will still hide the severity of it though so worth buying anyway

  • For the OPs original issue, I've had a lot of luck with Re-po Paint Doctor. Is usually a bit cheaper than anything in the Meguiar's range. But as already mention if the scratch is deep enough there won't be anything you can do.
I had a friend who lent her car out and it came back with C*** carved into the bonnet. These types of products really cleaned it up making it more legible than before.
I ended up plastidipping the entire bonnet for her as a quick fix. :-)
