Full Time WFH - What Should I Be Studying in Spare Time?

I work from home full time work in sales for a software company. It pays well but I have a lot of spare time. While I feel like I'm wasting.

As much as watching NBA while I work is fun, I want to do more with my time and 'level up'.

I love being creative, using my imagination, and optimizing processes. I would like to study/learn how to leverage that into income and/or a better paying job. My partner and I are into real estate (Have properties already) but I feel there is only so much I could be gaining as it comes down to equity/income to take further steps.

I'm not sure coding is what i'm into and further developing Photoshop/video editing skills doesn't feel like it would give a good ROI on time.

Any advice?

shouldn't you be at least studying something related to your job? or ask your manager for more tasks?

    • +3

I do the study asked of me and hit targets within my expected range. There really isn't any further to climb with it and any extra bonuses arent in line with the effort required.

Working remotely (I different country) and in sales doesn't lend itself to a career path in the company. At best I would be a sales manager which I don't want to do (Have had this role in the past)/.

Sounds like graphic design might interest you. AI will shake it up a bit, but a human that knows how to get specific things done will always be important. Though if you already feel like you hit a brick wall with motivation for Photoshop then design might not be a good fit for you.

TBH my advice for you would be to do something outdoors or something active, especially if you spend most of your day at home working on a screen. Probably not the advice you're looking for but I think development isn't necessarily just financial.

      I appreciate the advice.

Right now, it's not a matter of changing jobs. Its looking for something to upskill and do on the side. My position is fortunate as a make a decent income but just feel like I have spare time i should/could be maximising.

That's totally fair. When I read your post I imagined someone being holed up inside all day from work then study, glued to a computer screen which isn't always great for mental/emotional health. I just wanted to encourage not doing that.

Are you talking about getting exercise / going to the gym or joining sports clubs? That is important too but I think the OP is after self development or gaining extra skills that might give them an edge in career progression.

      • +1

Correct, things that will develop skills for employment and income.

I live a healthy active life. Gym at 5am every week day, golf on the weekends. I have a great life actually but just feel I am wasting my days career-wise and wanting ensure I'm setting my family up as well as i can financially and feel fulfilled.

        • Wth are you me? Lol

        • @jules_d1

So your sore ankle is all better now?

          • -2

@parsimonious one: Hahah nice stalking. Actually I'm not back into it really. I tried playing on the weekend and packed it in 3 holes in. Lots of physio but nearly there.

I appreciate you take so much time out of your life to search and worry about me. We need more people like you in this world :)

      something outdoors or something active

      Dangerous advice🤣

      • Hahaha… indeed

        Ankle must be better now

How about a Lean Six Sigma certification?

    • Thanks for the advice. I've explored this before and if I feel like moving back into a formal operations mode, this would be something I'd explore.

do what interests you./ or what career you want to do

learn some carpentry skills, grows some fruit trees. only you know this

don't waste your time watching the NBA, its awful now, just a 3 point marathon, no big men anymore

take massive naps too, get in your car and drive half to office and back home, solves the too much time issue

    • I think you may have missed the point a bit.

As much as watching NBA while I work is fun

I'm a Clippers fan so it hasn't been fun at all

  • If you can learn web designing and the associated programming for it, you could generate some money by freelancing for small businesses. You could even build a website that scratches an itch you have about real estate, something that domain or realestate.com.au don't do.

in my time between tasks/meetings/work (lol) i workout, read/audio book, tinker with resume and refresh/revise skills most importantly i put in the time on maintaining networks as they often back door you into a better position over studying to get through the front door

you should look to better yourself as much as you can while on company time then use for free time to work on being a better person in your home life

    • Yes. Networking is something I'm working in right now. Thanks. Whilst working from home, I am trying to get out and meet with clients face to face if the are local as well.

imagine what the world could accomplish if people actually did the job they're paid to do in the hours they work. crazy.

    • As in, they should get paid the same amount but be allowed to work less hours because they work more efficiently?

Another one rorting the WFH bandwagon

    • +5

      ^^^^so much this.

my work doesn't let me work from home.

      absolutely refused.

      not even during lockdown.

I've tried begging for it, negotiating, etc.

they didn't even even budge when I threatened to quit.

they just said they'd find another brain surgeon.

    • I work more efficiently at home so often complete work related tasks much faster. So am i rorting it just because I have extra free hours in my day to also do non work related tasks?

      • +1

        Yes

        • +1

So if a business finds a way to produce a product cheaper, but charge the consumer the same price, are they rorting the system in your opinion?

      • I reckon there is a lot of people out there that don't calculate the 3-4 hrs commute as a total waste of time especially driving . The train I guess something constructive could be done on a screen .

    • How am I rorting?

My employer, which is in a completely different country has placed expectations and targets upon me.

      I reach/exceed these targets.

      • Reach higher

        • why?

        • Pay higher

For someone like myself who wfh 4 days a week now, totally by choice of my own. I spend less in fuel, less effort on the freeway, more time with my children, more time for life. Something people have been wanting for decades, now there's people, for whatever reason want us to return to the old way of doing things.
And for what? Status quo. F your status quo.

I acknowledge I'm late to the party - got distracted and only just found the tab again - but perhaps some study might be worthwhile:
    - MBAs always seem useful to those higher up, and probably deductible if work doesn't cover it
    - Similar to you, I've wanted to expand, so I've actually enrolled in an accredited counselling degree because I figure it will be interesting, it will always be useful/helpful, potentially work in with existing work, and a good way to give back to your community
    - Otherwise, something more thought based like philosophy, theology, anthropology, etc (I have philosophy and theology degrees, and each has taught me much more about people and relationships than my income generating engineering degree)
I figure a degree usually looks good on a resume, but I also acknowledge its only one option to consider…
    All the best with it!

  • Are you quiet quitting, OP?
You could take welding courses, just like what I did…
