Free $0 UK Mobile SIM Card with EU Roaming Delivered (No Credit, Recharge to Activate) @ GiffGaff

240

If you're planning a trip to the UK or Europe this is a great alternative to buying a travel Sim card.

GiffGaff (UK mobile provider) will send a mobile Sim card for free to Australia. You will have to top it up in order to activate it.

All-inclusive prepaid plans can be bought for 8 GBP (with 5GB data) or 10 GBP (with 20GB data). More details here https://www.giffgaff.com/sim-only-deals

Plans include roaming in the EU, making it handy for a trip through the UK and Europe.

And if you for some reason need a UK phone number in Australia you can also activate the card in Australia by loading it up with 10GBP credit, and use that credit to buy a prepaid plan when/if you get to the UK. To my understanding the credit doesn't expire if you don't use it.

Sign up with a referral link (Ozbargain has some for Giffgaff if you click through below) and they give you 5 GBP credit for free when you activate your Sim card.

  • Ah didn't know there were ref links here. I ended up ordering directly a couple of weeks ago and it's already delivered.

For goodybags with an allowance greater than 5 GB, your EU usage will have a 5 GB cap applied.

Dropping this here in case anyone was planning to use their full allowance elsewhere in Europe.

I rate giffgaff. Used em when in the uk and took it with me across Europe.

Can confirm the 5gb limit so roaming is limited.

A couple of notes about GiffGaff, from a UK trip over Christmas:
    1) No MMS
    2) No 5G or VoLTE
    3) Network wasn't the best, O2 not as good as EE which my Telstra SIM spent most the time connected to.

That all being said, great value and IIRC if you add £10 credit (not a Goodybag), it won't expire.

  • How often do they need topping up for the number to not be disconnected? I have a UK number I’d like to park and not risk losing it every 6 months if it’s not used

You have to make a call, send a text or add credit every 6 months to keep the number alive. They usually email me to tell me a few weeks before my 6 months is up. Receiving texts doesn't count.

I've had a UK 3 sim for years that has never expired, without any top up or use requirements, but if you leave it in your phone activated while you are out of the UK for more than 6 months, they may turn off your global roaming and ban you for year. So can only put in phone when you need to use.

        Wow haha

  • How do I order to Australia? Address section only let's me out in a UK address. TIA

    • +1

When I click through using one of the Ozbargain referral links, the address form has a country drop-down option that allows Australia. I'm doing it on mobile if it matters.

      • Thanks! Worked

  • How do you activate it without a UK credit card?

    • Works fine with an Aussie Visa or MasterCard. Use a card with no international fees e.g. Macquarie, Citibank, ING etc

      • Good idea

  • Any info on how long it takes to arrive? Would not want to run it too close to a departure date.
Also, any news on which EU countries it is best suited to?
    TIA
