Anytime Fitness - Transfer Old Keyfob to Friend?

Has anyone had success waiving the keyfob fee when given (or after buying) a keyfob from another person? Wanting to hear any experiences with this.

The Anytime gym I contacted insisted it had to be at the same gym as the original and that it was 'too much work' or not possible to transfer the keyfob across different people…

Since many people sell their fobs online it seems like it should be possible?
The other forum post asking about selling keyfobs seemed to be inconclusive as to whether it was possible.

Feels like they are just trying to maximise profits, but I was wondering if there is any chance they are telling the truth and whether it'd be worthwhile trying another Anytime. Thanks.

  • They take your photo when you join don't they? You probably can't just hand over the fob because when they scan in your photo will come up.

    • Yep that would be true. To explain more clearly, I meant that I cancelled my membership a while back, but my friend is looking to join up with a new contract at a new gym. I was more wondering if he could take the keyfob to a new gym and save on the keyfob signup fee.

      • If they never asked for your fob back then chances are the fobs don't actually cost all that much. The labour of programming the member into the fob is probably where most of the cost comes from.

        • That's my guess. The fob is probably worthless and it's just another reason for them to add on admin fees by allocating a new fob.

The fob is able to be used at any gym to gain entry when you have an active membership so I doubt their given reason is accurate.

I doubt they'd allow it OP.

@Trop: Are you sure it still lets you in even though your membership is cancelled?

Your fob id will be tied to your membership in the computer so will be deactivated as soon as you cancel it. The Gym could just allocate your fob to another member but then they'd miss out on the profit they make from these sorts of things.

No real cost to this since the staff are just sitting around most of the day anyway. Open account, change fob number, save. It took me longer to type this then it would to make this change. They really just want the profit of charging for a new fob.

          • @1st-Amendment: Charging a lot for fobs makes sense too, if they replaced them free of charge then people wouldn't take care of them and they'd be constantly programming new fobs.

            • @AustriaBargain: $70-$100 is the range they are charging depending on the club. Frankly, it’s a mad ripoff, considering we all likely have a phone with the same capability.

  • +1

The key fobs only cost them a few bucks. If they allow you transfer it, they miss out on charging whatever inflated fee that charge.
