  • Who is the best chess player in the world at the moment? Need to watch some of the best moves

Hans Niemann is the best chess player in the world, by a pretty wide margin too. He has also never been involved in any type of controversy which makes the dominance so significant

It's pretty straightforward, give up your friends and most of your life to memorising half a million opening moves and previous games. That's about it really.

    • This is why I hate watching chess nowadays. People studying it and not just being spontaneous when playing.

      • +3

You may enjoy rapid or blitz tournaments then, with less time on the clock they can't devote as much time to thinking about a particular line.

        • Yeah I think that might be more my jam. Cheers for the suggestion!

          • @Munki: Now you're watching the game being played with lots of mistakes.. Is it really more fulfilling?

            • +1

@blackfrancis75: Well some like watching a 5 day cricket test while others hate it and only like the short forms like 50 overs or 20/20. To each their own.

              • @xoom: Not the worst analogy I've heard today.. :)

                • @blackfrancis75: Uhm. Thanks i guess.

I mean the purist love the mind games of it all while others just love the fast pace action.

I can see both sides of the argument why one loves one or the other.

                  • @xoom: There are some merits to the analogy for sure.
Where it breaks down is that 20/20 isn't just "Test Cricket with a shorter time limit". There are significant differences to the rules and format of the game itself.

                    • @blackfrancis75: I get you about the differences of each format.
However A lot of spectators of sports aren't into the fine details of how said sport is played.

They see the team they are backing score. They cheer. They see them win. They rejoice. They lose. They get sad.

Many don't go into the intricacies of the game like where each player is situated and what that location is called for example.

The people that do. We call them sports fanatics.

                      • @xoom: The analogy again isn't quite right. Spectating chess you can't really enjoy or appreciate if you're just superficially watching. You do have to understand it and concentrate to recognise when a good move was played vs. a bad one

                        • @blackfrancis75: And yet people like speed chess or rapid / blitz tournaments.

Not saying one or the other is better more a personal preference really.

                          • @xoom: | @blackfrancis75: And yet people like speed chess or rapid / blitz tournaments.

This is not a counterpoint to what I said, but you seem to be presenting it as such.
I'm referring to the limitations of the analogy with Cricket

                            • @blackfrancis75: The crux of our discussion was wether it was fulfilling watching a fast paced and sure mistake riddled chess game or not.

All i was saying is to some it is. They just want the adrenaline rush. And this gives them that.

Not dismissing that you don't get an enjoyment in a fast paced chess game. You are certainly more than welcome to do you.
