Claiming TRS for New Phone

A relative purchased an iPhone 14 $1,297 (>$1,000) from Office Works.
Tax invoice printed by the sales terminal has the serial number but does not have a name on it. My understanding was if the value is grater than $1000 the name must be printed in the tax invoice.

Will this cause any issues?

If they open the box and start to use the phone will they be still eligible to claim TRS ?

    Yes
Tax invoices for sales of $1000 or more must also include the buyer's identity, for example their full name or passport number.

    Yes

You can remove your goods from the packaging and use the goods before you depart. You can choose to leave the container/packaging behind as long as the officer can verify the goods against the corresponding tax invoice when the TRS claim is processed.

I think it's reasonable to open and check if the device is in working order / DoA /early life failure.

That said… The purpose of TRS is to not bring it back so having it fully set up and as a daily driver when they check it would probably not fly lol

Yes.. I've been knocked back by trs because my invoice didn't have my name and address on it. Luckily they asked me to go back and fix it then just mail in the Invoice so they could pay me.

Definitely go back to officeworks to ask for a proper one

Officeworks should be able to issue a invoice with your name.

  • According to the TRS site you get a refund on the way out and pay duty/tax on it on the way back as well as on everything else you purchase because combined it now all exceeds the $300 limit. Kind of pointless trying to get the refund to start with.

‘If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared, and if the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas/duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, any applicable GST and/or duty may need to be paid’

  • If they have not opened the box, they can try returning it for a full refund and buy it again (with name on invoice). I have done this in a similar situation at JbHiFi.

No problem with the opened box. In fact, the TRS people will open the box to make sure that the item is as described.

just pdf edit the email invoice dw

    • The chance is probably low, but you know you could be in big trouble for these things, right?

      • nah you just play dumb and nothing happens

  • Hi all, what about if the invoice has everything except the serial number of the phone? Still can claim TRS? TIA

    • Hi, did you get an answer? Have you tried that? Same situation now. Thanks

      • They just need the model number to verify against the device.
