20% off DOD Car Cameras + Free Shipping at Road Witness (Online Only)

40

Hello fellow OzBargainers, I'm a long time user who's recently started up a business selling car cameras.

For the next 4 days we're offering 20% off our DOD range of dash-cams.
DOD are one of the most well known brands of car cameras internationally and have much better recording quality than the cheaper unbranded ones.

It is very rare to be able to find genuine local stock of these cameras at this price.

Here is a brief summary of what's on offer:

DOD F900LHD - $183.19
Probably the benchmark camera. High definition 1080P recording quality. Lens and screen can be turned so it can be used as an ordinary handheld camera. Excellent stylish build quality with large 2.5" screen. Only drawside is that it won't automatically start recording when you turn on your car (a common feature in most other models). You have to push 2 buttons to start the recording so not that inconvenient if you dont mind.

DOD F880LHD - $167.20
Similar recording quality to the F900LHD. It has the ability to automatically start recording when you start the car and powers off when you turn off the car. Screen size is slightly smaller but overall good quality.

DOD V660 - $119.20
Can be considered your basic model. Marketed as a night vision camera but does essentially the same as the others. Recording quality is HD 720 so still very clear. The lens gives videos a more fishbowl look so you can capture a wider view than the others. Features automatic recoding like the F880. No battery so it can't be used away from a power source.

More info for those who are unaquainted with car cameras (also known as dash-cams or black box recorders):
The purpose of these is to record the road while you are driving. If you have an accident, you can use it as evidence that it was not your fault and potentially save money on excess. They have also been used to report reckless driving and road rage to police. They record to SD card (not included) and cycle/loop record (overwrites old files once it reaches capacity) so you never have to change the card. Once you have footage you want, you simply use an SD card reader or plug the device into your computer to extract the video files. They come with a USB cable that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter for power. Some can start recording automatically when the car is started and some have motion detection so you can use them as security cameras.

Sorry that was a bit longer of a post than I expected.
If you have any questions, please ask.

  • I am not sure same but similar the these ones I got from Ebay for $22. I know mine is not the best but for $100 range many others available with GPS function.

    • The difference is in the quality. It's like choosing a Sony or a Soniq. Most of the ones sold on eBay won't be able to clearly view license plate numbers.

      • Played a test video from DOD F900HD on your website. I could not see licence plate numbers on any cars in the video even when played at highest resolution.???

        • Thanks for pointing it out. Might have been affected by YouTube video editor. I'll upload some more tonight via the native video player on the website so you can see.

is it legal to use a car camera? isn't it a breach of the privacy act etc?

    • These are legal. They've even been featured on the news (in fact there is a story on them tonight).

you might not be able to use it as evidence in court unless the other party is actually aware of recording i think

        @qtvinsta

No you can definitely use them in court, Ive got a pair of cameras in the truck for work and have used them in court before as the other party attempted to prove me at fault (and what happened is they cut infront of me, shortened my stopping distance and as a result they had their camry shortened by 3 feet)

        • thats good to hear… i heard a story where it was inadmissible in court because the other party did not know they were being recorded… lesson there was they needed to have mentioned that a recording was taking place at the start of the conversation… very confusing to me

I am 99% sure that is for police only, bit like photography in public laws, you dont require express permission to photograph someone in a public place, one would argue that since almost all roads are publicly owned or publicly accessible then permission is not required.

The cameras (well my work ones) only record whats going on infront of me and has the other trained onto the drivers seat (to apparently make sure i wasn't asleep, or on the phone) the recordings have been used several times to identify dangerous drivers and have evidence against them.

    "Only drawside is"

I think you managed to combine drawback and downside. :-)

  • Which is the model that can act as security camera (with motion detection) and what is the angle of view /recording? if the car engine is not on, I presume it is running on battery in the motion detection mode. What type of battery and how long can it run ?

    Thanks

    • The F900 would be the one to go with if you wanted it as a security camera. I'll test the battery life and get back to you but the battery itself is 3.7V 900mAh lithium ion. Also, it uses a 120 degree wide angle lens.

    • +1

Tested the battery life on the F900 and it'll record continuously for 2 hours. With motion detection on and using the screen saver this time should extend out a bit more.

  • How well do these cameras handle the heat and a face-full of sun while they are sitting behind the windscreen? Are the cases able to handle the UV exposure on an ongoing basis?

    • Can't really say from personal experience but the spec's say it'll take up 60 degree heat. If you're in the dead heat of summer then it's probably best to take it out of the car but I'm sure it's safe otherwise.

  • Rep, i take it the only one that has the suction cup mount + the GPS logger is the GSE550? also is it possible to pre order that model with the 20% off?

    • Copie, stock of the GSE550 will be around mid Sept. I can offer the 20% discount but shipping will be $10. If you are still interested, please message me. Thanks.

  • Anion consisted??

    • And also correct me if I'm wrong - the v660 has the widest recording angle?

      • Correct. Pros and cons with the angle thing. The wider the angle, the greater area you capture however the image will be more fishbowl like so it's give or take. Sorry I haven't had time to upload video samples but will do so soon. In the mean time there are plenty on youtube.

  • You don't mention the vision-hd one for $79 on your website, why not? how does that compare? how much video will fit on an 8Gb SD card? I presume they all continuously record? ie. when the SD card fills up they keep going overwriting the oldest files?

    • The sale is specifically on the DOD cameras. The vision camera is more basic in terms of image quality. It does the job and is well worth considering if you don't want to spend the extra money. It does continuously loop record as you suggested (they all do). 8GB should give about 2-3 hours though to reach capacity.

      • thanks for the reply. According to the specs both the vision-hd and DOD V660 do 1280x720 so same resolution but I guess you're saying the DOD one has a better lens/CCD. Is the V660 you're selling the V2 model?

Also I noticed your webpage on the 660 says it takes up to a 32GB SD card but the spec sheet for it says up to 128GB, if that's right might want to update your webpage.

I had to google what the hell this "anion consisted" thing means. I found: "V660 is Anion consisted and Anion can freshen the air, cleaning the bad smell in your car; fresh air will make you feel like in the nature and bath with Phytoncid." Sounds like gobbledegook to me but ignoring that it looks like a good camera and good price.

        • Indeed, the model is the V2 version. Thanks for noticing about the card size. I'll update it.
Thanks for also summarising what anion consisted means.

  • Just bought a v660. OP I have the same questions as davidf, what's is your response to that? Probably a bit late for that now but would be nice to know a bit more before recommending to friends and family.
