I think a good deal for this camera, considering it gives you everything you need to start and more.

just grab a cheap 40/2 prime or kit lens off Fbook marketplace and go shooting.

recent firmware updates improved focusing a lot, making this just a tad behind Z6ii but still lots better than Z5

as someone who got tired of correcting Sony stills color output, this is tons better than A7iii I just sold (thanks eBay for 0% fees on 3 items per month lol)

Z lineup may not suit everyone, with limited number of glass available, it's getting better slowly with a few lenses on the roadmap

I switched to Nikon as I love the colour output and love their 40mm and 105mm lenses. 105mm closest rival is Sony 90mm 2.8 macro, and that is an impressive lens, while 105 beats it in about every aspect. sharpness corner to corner wide open at 2.8, solid stabilisation, easy manual focus, microcontrast and rendering is second to none, also light and relatively compact compared to other telephoto options, and can do 1:1 macro..

essentially I purchased Z6 just to shoot that 105/2.8 lol

BTW battery extender is a convenient dual battery USB-C charger, I rarely use it in camera

Don't know about others but I can't get over the lack of USB C and SD card slot for this camera. I'll wait till the gen 2 goes through the same cycle.

    • +2

The z5 also has type c and dual slots, if you don't need the features of the z6 (ii). It's been down around $1200 before - I picked one up with the 24-70 f4 and its been a great setup for hiking.

    • +1

Z6 has USB-C. the battery extender has USB-C, too

what do you need it for?

      • Sorry my bad i mixed it up. I do astrophotography and sometimes need to charge the camera whilst shooting timelapses. The gen 2 allows this but gen 1 doesn't and I mistakenly thought it was due to a lack of type C

        • battery extender can be charged while using it in camera. not sure about the USB-C port on the body itself..

    • +4

not sure where you got this info from but Z6 does have USB-C.

i don't see the issue with SD card slot tbh and it's hardly a deal breaker.

  • Great price!

  • I shoot Z6 too, got it through ozbargain deal, i believe i paid a hair over 3k @ JB Hi-Fi back in 2019.

OP what do you use the 105mm for? I've never ventured beyond 50mm focal length for prime lenses, thinking of getting something with a bit more reach but unsure about the tight framing etc.

    • +1

105 isn't too tight, it's great for a lot of things: portraits, macro (goes 1:1 magnification while leaving enough space not to block light), landscapes, also great for street photography or reporting while getting a good framed shot but staying unseen, works great with this lens being black. a lens that can do this much is very versatile in my books

105 would be an awesome pairing with z7 with larger sensor as it can resolve and gives lots of room for crop, but still sufficient crop potential with z6

I still would love Nikon to give us a 200/2.8 prime as not all of us are happy to lug around 70-200 2.8 just to be able to shoot 200/2.8 because that's the super sweet portrait territory

but I am super happy with 105mm portraits too

      • But wouldn't 105mm rob context? i think 85mm may still allow for some background context. Or maybe i am understanding telephotos wrong as I've only shot 35mm and 50mm.

        • 105 is not much tighter than 85

          https://petapixel.com/2018/10/13/portrait-lens-shootout-85mm…

essentially it's the question of composition and working distance, from my experience 85 can let a bit too much in, but that's all subjective. 135 may be a bit too long for full body environmental shot, and you got to stand quite far from the subject. working with a model, that means a lot of shouting and walking back and forth, so 85 is better there. but if you are catching kids running around, 105 or 135 will give you option to remain unseen and snap a genuine moment as opposed to create one.

that being said, again 85 isn't far from 105

however Z 85/1.8 S just doesn't quite cut it, too simple and one trick pony. if nikon had 85 1.4 S that is manageable in handling and had advanced features like lens button and control ring I'd consider it. but there's none, there's 85 1.2 behemoth, thanks but no thanks

105 2.8 is the best of both worlds there. plus macro. plus sharp corner to corner. for me in Z lineup there's nothing else really, besides 40mm and maybe occasional requirement for something ultrawide

          • @shabaka: 85/1.4S sounds like a very expensive proposition… looking at 2k+ minimum!

I'll try and see if i could pick up 105 used, but Nikon Z is a very rare system, not an awful lot of second hand lenses trading hands on the used market.

You mentioned about the 40mm, how are you finding that lens? I already have a 50mm 1.8S but it's way too big for my liking and I want a something a bit smaller. Also contemplating 28mm as it complements my 50mm well but not too sure about the focal length.

            • @dukeGR4: 40mm is nice. I personally think 50mm is a bit too long for casual shots, and 35mm a bit too wide, but people have different preferences there

40mm is really compact, I rarely use it at F/2 as it's a bit soft with strong vignette. it can do great portraits at F/2.8. but it really shines at F/4 - F/5.6 where it resolves with awesome clarity, and thanks to low weight and compact build, that's the lens I usually grab when I go somewhere for a walk

I grabbed my 105 used as well, there were 2 on eBay not long ago.

              • @shabaka: ahh.. i was expecting it to be somewhat sharp. how soft are we talking? are you able to get good separation (out of focus) with the 40mm at F4-5.6?

yeah 50mm focal length for me is only good for portraits i don't ever use it for anything else.

i was also looking at the 26mm Z but it's quite expensive at RRP, same focal length as iPhone (which makes it in fact, one of the most popular focal length in the world). Only downside is the barrel extends when focusing. But hey, at least the lens mount is made of metal :D

Shame i missed out on the $260 deal for the Nikon Z 40mm… hoping for another one soon.

                • +1

@dukeGR4: here, this also has comparison of optical performance with 35 and 50

                  https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-40mm-f-2/3

while 35 and 50 deliver their best sharpness at 2.8, 40mm works best at 4 and 5.6 where it matches performance of 35 and 50, at 2 and 2.8 it's decently sharp at the center but sharpness drops beyond center

it doesn't mean that it's bad under F/4, portraits are great at 2.8 and give enough separation. also you don't want to see every pore on the skin, so total sharpness isn't always what you want.

I am very happy with 40mm, not considering any other wide prime. 35 and 50 are too bulky, same goes for 24mm 1.8. for 20mm 1.8 I could kind of accept it, but I don't need one either. great lens for astrophotography though

Z6 II $2,712.58 from Amazon with $400 gift card from Nikon seems a better deal.

also other Z lens on sale on Amazon, like Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 $1299 with $250 gift card

    Z 40mm f2 $345 with $50 gift card

    • doesn't come with any of the bonuses tho. a card would cost you ~$200, and extra battery too, and extender.

also z6ii isn't much of an upgrade

      • Used your existing SD card, 0 dollar.
For me the benefit of ML is small and light, never use a battery grip on it.
        Easily buy 2 EN15 batteries for $50.

        • ok

I use battery extender as super convenient dual battery charger, as it takes any USB-C input, and shows how charged each battery is

also extender is very convenient with longer lenses, mirrorless isn't only about small and light, look at them lenses mate. z6ii capabilities are half wasted if you're not slapping an S lenz on that body

they have the likes of Z50 Z30 for the small and light camp, too, Z6 isn't really small and light, and Z6ii is even slightly heavier to add that SD card slot

but each to their own :)

  • Any good YouTube video/channel out there for the Camera beginner whose had Nikon SLR D90 back in the day, some others like AW1, and is looking at Mirrorless?

Not too familiar and great with them all, but always had a little interest flaring up every so often….

  • Better to buy from eBay used Z6 for around $1200. Otherwise Z6 II new.

    • that's true about every product out there, if you don't care about warranty and item being brand new 🙂

  • +2

it has been this price for a month now, I ordered mine on the 14th of Feb. Considering retail value of the battery grip, extra battery and memory card is $500+, this bundle is of good value.

    • +1

yup, got mine on 16th. was surprised no one posted this earlier, and finally decided to post it myself lol

      • I thought it is one of those Amazon algorithm "glitches" where the price gets readjusted after a few people buy the product. I also bought the adapter for Fmount as I am heavily invested in Fmount lenses, however the firmware on the camera is outdated and doesn't recognise the adapter. If anyone plans on using old lenses with the adapter (VER 2), make sure you buy a memory card reader if you dont have one so you would be able to upgrade to the latest firmware on the camera.

        • yes I was bummed that you simply have to have a XQD card reader to update camera firmware, no other way simply. grabbed something for $30 off Amazon, works great now that I have it

        • The FTZ adapters seem to still go for about $300 from what I can see. Would you know of any deals on those, or even kits with the body and adapter both included? I also have a couple of F-mount lenses I would very much like to keep using, especially since I can't see myself being able to afford new good Z-mounts anytime soon.

  • I actually got it for $1809, did not open the box, then returned, bought a used one from eBay.

    • solid strategy mate!

      • yeah, it was a great price at the beginning of the year, thought could go lower, so did not touch the box to return in case. But you know Au $ went down, the price is actually risen, and saw a good deal on eBay.

I am a hobbyist, a little imperfect photo from used camera, did not care.

    • was that the bundle or just the camera?

  • I was considering buying a used a7iii for $1550 with 22000 shutter count but perhaps this may be better.

    • +1

Watch on Sony sales, usually you can get brand new with this price if you do not need it urgently.

  • +1

    Just beware of the following:

    • Z6 was released in 2018, 5 years old tech.
    • Only supports XQD/CFexpress B, both are expensive, comes with inferior XQD card instead of CFexpress B.
    • Unlike traditional battery grips, MB-N10 does not have any controls on it, primarily due to Z6 does not have interface terminals.

So, in all practicality you are just getting a second battery. If you go with other systems, you are not forced to use XQD or CFExpress. Even Z6 II supports UHS-I and II.

    • XQD card is so inferior that getting UHS-ii SD card that matches its speed would probably cost more than XQD

not sure who needs gigabit per second write speeds of CFExpress either.. lost me on that argument

Z6ii shares the same sensor and just adds another imaging processor of the same type, so it's also 5yo tech? cameras age slightly different. when a new sensor of the same kind is released, or new processong engine with exciting new capabilities then yes we can talk "last gen"

Leica doesn't bother innovating either, just rolls out a different body design and they flock in their wallets wide open

      • The point is most people don't need ultra high speed cards, whatever manufacturers do, should at lease include a secondary slot that supports plain old SD card.

"Inferior" XQD card is more of a passing comment on they updated the firmware to support CFExpress B, but give away older XQD card.

Was simply highlighting it was released in 2018.

        • yes all good mate, sorry if I sounded toxic.

age doesn't mean much in cameras unless there has been some breakthrough, which there wasn't

    • +1

sorry - but photography peaked when 5D mark 2 and D700 came out. Beyond that not much has changed tech wise. Sure sensor tech, AF etc have all improved a lot since 2008 but imo, not much has really changed. 5 yo tech is nth in the photography world. You seriously cannot go wrong with any camera launched in the past 10 years.

I recently picked up an X-Pro 2, at least from my phone screen the photos are just as good as the Z6's, and possibly any other cameras out there.

  • Damn Z6 is really ancient now

    • so is A7iii, but lots of people bought them recently (including me) like tomorrow wasn't a thing

  • Thanks op. I managed to grab this package for $1499 this morning but there were only 3 left at this price.

    • haha whaaaat XD yes can see on camels that it dropped this low. insane luck :)
