My plastic chair mat was cracking so I was looking for another solution for carpeted floors which looked better than the plastic one. I couldn't find many solutions for carpeted flooring apart from the plastic mats except for this one. More expensive from the plastic mats but this one is on a limited time deal from $120. Appears to have reasonable reviews.

"This chair mat is handmade in 3 layers, it has a rigid layer inside(3mm polycarbonate, a total of 10mm thickness to allow use on the high carpet floor or hard floor. Chair wheels can roll on it smoothly. No cracking, no curls."

Limited time deal but not sure when it ends.

A few designs for the deal (1200 X 900mm)
Carrar $96
Morroco $92
Santiago $92

The bigger mat (1360 X 1000mm) is also on a deal at $144.50 from $170
L_Morocco
L_Santiago

Hopefully good riddance to the plastic chair mat.

Bought one of these a few weeks ago for same price. Chair glides so smoothly now. Kinda not use to that, was on carpet before and chair would sink into the pile.

    Super thickness

    Impressive girth as well

if you want something smaller and not as good and uglier, but with a rubber backing that still works pretty good and is much cheaper, Bunnings for $33 https://www.bunnings.com.au/standard-carpets-1000-x-1000mm-c…. good option if you want to slide the mat under the desk (since dont most people sit in a way that means the wheels go under the desk?)

    • I have that one. It's deceptively heavy and a tad smaller than I would like. Also looks pretty ugly in my renovated study.

    • Yep, this is what we've got too. Marine carpet.. it looks alright on our already dark grey carpet too.

Id be careful. Its a catch 22 with mats. If don't use a mat the wheels will eventually break up the underlay of constant back and forth, thus you then get the ripple effect in the carpet as the underlay is shot.

On the flip coin…a mat will cover an area that then gets no light. Thus if down for a long time will be a different shade underneath to the rest of the carpet over time, ie natural light and your a standard room light will take some of the color out of the carpet, but under the mat will remain the same. Also your get a a discolor around the edge of the mat with general wear.

To preserve firstly lift up the mat once a week and vacuum under. Secondly get carpets professionally cleaned once a year.

    Just advice DYOR.

To mat or not to mat — that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous carpet wear, or to take arms against a sea of carpet discolouration, and, by opposing, mend them?

Some say that it feels more natural when you don’t use protection

    • I guess with the light thing, a transparent plastic mat would be better. I have one from Costco on a hardwood floor and it's been great for my home office chair.

    • Wool carpet will definitely be affected by light. Solution dyed nylon carpet is much less affected.

Someone suggested putting these on a chair, I’ve ordered them and waiting for delivery. I’ve got thick plush carpet, and my mat always moves. I don’t want to get the carpet mat because some people say it rips up the carpet

      • I have two Ikea Langfjall chairs, one with castor and one without. I've been wishing to have castors on both.
        I'm on hardwood floor though.

      • Ditto, ordered last night, except I got the Officeworks version

Hi all - I would like to share my experience with this. It's a bit mixed, but overall okay.

I got one of these in the Carrara design (the geometric one in the preview) at the start of 2022. I was drawn to it because the plastic mats never felt good to me, and I thought this would be a bit of luxury. Soon after getting it I realised it wasn't as 'flat' as I had hoped. It comes folded and then you unfold to put it down, so it is essentially two pieces of hard plastic (thicccc for sure), but covered in fabric. It lasted about 6 months before it started going a bit weird. The backing started coming off, and there was this glue that started coming through. I was worried that it would damage the carpet (I was in a rental at the time). The moment I started to fold it together the entire backing came off.

Anyway, I left a pretty raging review and the seller offered me a replacement to remove the critical review. I was away from my computer and out of town on business and I couldn't even remember my amazon password, so they started getting really antsy at me to remove the review. I explained I was away. They said they would give me all my money back if I took the time to remove the review ASAP and also send me a replacement. Anyway, I ended up going to the hassle of resetting the amazon password and deleting the review.

It was explained to me that the Carrara design was relatively new and come from a different factory. I got a replacement in the Santiago and it has not given me any major hassles (although the dip in the fold is still there, so it won't be as totally flat as the image may appear).

tl;dr: Product is a great idea and functions (although there is a dip from the fold), but make sure to test and check for quality. Maybe dodge the Carrara design.

The best chair mats for carpet are glass. I use a tempered glass pool fence panel from Bunnings and it’s perfect on carpet. It’s heavy so stays in place, very solid so the chair rolls smoothly, and tough. It’s in perfect condition for me and is almost two years old now. Tossed so many shit chair mats in the trash but this works.

  • I have the same one and bought for the same price the last time it went on sale. No issues so far and I'm pretty happy with it. It's heavy and the material is very hard so it's perfect to put over carpet for chairs to roll over but not feel like plastic under your feet.

  • A noob question - wouldnt a rug work the same as this?

    • might be a bit hard to wheel around on a rug, and im guessing the fibres from the rug would end up in the wheels?

wouldnt a rug work the same as this?

By "rug" I assume you mean a mat, a piece of carpet with the edges bound so they don't fray.

It depends on what type of floor you're trying to protect. If it's a hardwood floor, then a mat will protect it. If it's a carpeted floor, a mat won't protect that, as the point loads of the chair's castors will go through the mat, and slowly damage the underlay.

    • I don't have this, but I do use a cheapo rug on my hardwood floor and it works perfectly. Rug cost me $50, no pile so the wheels work just fine.

  • I'm getting $118 for the small and $170 for the large?

  • Looks to be expired unfortunately. I've been needing a replacement.

  • Expired? Damn it!

  • Received mine a few days ago - looks nice, the split in the middle where the hard board folds is annoying, and I wish it was 20cm wider.

Overall pretty happy with it though, will be interesting to see how long it holds up.

  • The middle split is extremely annoying - has anyone screwed something in to keep the split flat?
