There was an error. This is now fixed.

Overrated and overpriced for a blended whisky.

No offence, but "single malt" just means made from scratch in a single factory, in the case of JW it's their 200-year old partners and quality controls are the same which gives it the same uniqueness.
There is just an increased obsessiveness about single malt and blended is generally considered of low quality but it actually depends on what is being blended.
For me, Macallan 15 is much better in the same price bracket than Blue Label but yeah Gold Label is not too bad.

These are just my thoughts, bought one for my dad though….he likes to put these on top shelf of his bar hehe. Thanks OP.

Had blue a few times, quite overrated

To each their own taste wise, but I don't rate this whiskey at all either.

I've only had it at weddings etc and I noticed that it's the people who are not regular scotch drinkers that get excited at drinking this expensive whiskey, which is good for me as the "cheaper" and more superior (to my tastes) are left for me.

For this price range, or even half this price, there are a large number of scotches I'd rate higher.

      • Options please

        • For me, like dirtyhen, Lagavulin 16 is my favorite,

For a cheaper drop I'm partial to Glenlivet 12, Talisker Storm, or Starward Nova (Melbourne based).

If you like something peaty Laphroig 10 Quarter cask or, for even more peatiness, Arberg 10.

But to each their own. I recommend being adventurous and trying lots of different ones to find your taste. Just don't go for one just because its expensive or dismissing the cheaper ones.

        Lavavulin my fav

i am a regular scotch drinker, this is just my default drop. otherwise it's glenfiddich sometimes japanese

i find it quite amusing that people like to judge another's tastes.

imo, it's like coffee, just drink what you think it's nice.

some people like filter coffee, some people like expresso, some like instant, and some put things like sugar or milk in their coffee, and that's okay.

Goes great with L.A ice cola 👍

You money bags. I mix mine with Que Cola Soft Drink

  • Calling Blue Label overrated is overrated, these aren't designed for people who like to actually drink scotch.

Blue Label is for people who like to give or receive expensive gifts, so they can impress with their gift giving budget, and the recipient can display their Blue Label bottle on the top of their bar shelf never to actually be consumed.

Blue Label is for people who know nothing about scotch but want to impress people at a restaurant, so they order the most expensive scotch on the menu. That's why it tastes like sweet water "ooh it's so smoooth", yeah it's designed to taste like fruit juice so non-scotch drinkers will like it neat.

    • i found this really amusing. perhaps you need better friends? i get given duty free blue label all the time when i have people flying to visit.

i don't need to have blue label 'a few times' to have an opinion. i get to have it all the time.

but goddamn the level of snobbery is all for show here.. it's just scotch and it's not really that expensive as far as scotch goes.

i also noticed that the same people criticising don't dare to put up their "such and such" is better.

      heh.

      • you're getting them as gifts through airport duty, so exactly what they're designed for. Gifts from or to people who don't know much about scotch. Not being snobby at all, bottles that are half the price have much more going on in them.

      • Aldi black is better. And it costs like $40. Go try it.
Once you hit the $150 mark there are much much better whiskeys out there. Blue label at $99 is probably worth buying.

I'm with you on this. The perception that price = quality (eg https://bizfluent.com/facts-7569473-chivas-regal-effect.html) is what sells this bottle.

A Glenfiddich 12, 15 or 18 is still cheaper and superior in taste and drinkability. No snobbery here, just having tried about 100 different whiskies I can't rate Blue as any more than average.

  • Have hardly ever had Blue but seemed over rated and nothing too special to me. I actually enjoy JW Black as an everyday scotch and really like JW Green. JW Gold is too characterless for me. I like Islay and bought 2 of the Laga 16s on the Coles deal last week and always have a bottle of Laphroaig on hand. At around $200 for something clean and unlikely to offend I like Hibiki - but only buy when I can get it for around $150 after cash back etc. Had a Glendronach at a friend last night which I hadn't had for a long time and enjoyed it.

  • I don't drink them that often but I'm guessing Glenlivet, Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich would be better experiences, in the same sort of genre and more reasonably priced than JW Blue (?).
