  • Great air fryer, especially at this price.

Just be careful cleaning them. A scrubbing sponge will easily strip the non-stick coating on the tray.

    • +5

I'm all good in that space. Cleaning your air fryer? That's up there with me cleaning my BBQ plate. Ain't gonna happen!
      Grabbed one. Cheers OP

      • I hear that. The misso thought it was feral til she started reaping the benefits of never cleaning it too lol. (aside from emptying the gunk in the bottom out every once in a while)

        • til she started reaping the benefits of never cleaning it too lol.

Is diahrea really a benefit though

        • -1

Yeah, I empty the excess oil, empty crumbs and peel off melted cheese etc, but don't actually clean clean it.

      • sorry for being complete noob, but what's the reason for not cleaning it? Other than can't be arsed. Is there actually any flavour or real tangible benefit from doing so?

        • +1

It's just quite an effort to cleaning an Air Fryer vs not. Especially considering how simple and quick it is to cook stuff in them.
But saying that, it's actually not overly difficult to clean one either!

        • +2

          Yeah, this is super gross

        • Not much bacteria survives at 300c, so there's little reason to.

          • @xmail: Most AF max out at 200c which is more than enough to kill bacteria etc

    • +1

A scrubbing sponge will easily strip the non-stick coating

That doesn't sound that great. Unless you actually used a metal scourer on it, which was never intended for non-stick surfaces.

      • +1

If it's that easy to strip the non-stick coating, you'd think that some of it will leech into your food.

    • +1

I put the removable tray in the dishwasher and wipe the rest of it out with a paper towel and I’m done

      • -2

to remove any pool of fat in the bottom, I let it cool down while I'm eating the meat (milady demands the air fryer is used outside), then bring the removable bowl/s into the kitchen, pick up our living room wastepaper basket with used tissues from blowing the nose, grab several of those, and wipe out/soak up the liquid fat with them and toss the oily tissues into the kitchen bin. I do that 2-3 times until the holey bowl and outer bowl are wipe clean, then put them back together, into the sink, and fill with water and a squirt of detergent to soak before a quick wipe over. Or a hot water in the sink quick washup.

that's if I'm not running the dishwasher (we only use about once a week) which is easier for the last part.

    • used the scourer side of a non scratch sponge and it already took some non-stick coating off, before the first use!

  • How does it compare to the phillips xxl air fryer?

    • +9

      It's a lot cheaper!

    • Prefer the basket. The Phillips has a mesh type basket with round divets in the basket. It was a nightmare to clean. And it gets bent out of shape.

Definelty the flat square surface and small removable flat tray that can go into the dishwasher.

    • I've had both, they both cook well but I prefer the basket on the Philips. Also the basket and drip tray are dishwasher safe on the Philips, only the drip plate is dishwasher safe on the Instant.

    • I've also had both, I feel like:
      - The basket in the Instant Pot feels bigger.
      - There is more space 'underneath' the mesh in the Phillips so I felt like I didn't have to turn the food in that one. The Instant Pot will prompt you to rotate.
      - The Phillips basket is on a rail. I hang my air fryer off the edge of a bench so it's more useful than the Instant Pot which is wholly separate.

      But they both cook well.

  • This or upcoming 26L air fryer from Aldi?

    • +3

26 litres is 5x better than 5 litres and 13x better than 2 litres. Simple.

      • +1

the bigger the oven the slower it will be to heat up for a same-size element

presuming an Australian plug-in appliance will be max 10A or 2400W - usually 2200W I've seen

my 1.5 litre Anko/KMart air fryer has a 900W element has 600W/litre and heats up fast

a 26 litre air fryer with 2400W has 92W/litre so might take 6.5x as long to heat up

this Vortex seems to have 1700W for 5.7 litres or nearly 300W/litre so somewhere in the middle

    • +1

At what size does it become a fan forced oven again.

      • +3

        60cm

        • +1

TIL I have a fan forced oven down there

    • 26 or 24? 24L air fryer oven was on special yesterday and is pretty much sold out everywhere.

      • Oh right, didn't realize it was Wednesday special. Oh well. And yes 24L

      • Turns out my local had 6 left yesterday night, so I got the Aldi:-)

    • bro 26L is the size of a microwave

  • +3

The digital display and control knob have a very tactile and satisfying feel to them.

  • +2

Great unit. I bought a second one. Normal price is $160 on Amazon.

    • Agree. We bought one last promo. Awesome air fryer. Why did we leave it so long. Use it every day and this unit is an absolute beauty.

  • +1

Been using this for 18 months, and it's really good. Made heaps of yummy crispy chips.

    • +9

I second this but also need to add than without an airfryer, I wouldn't be having that many chips in the last 18 months.

  • +1

Got one last time, only beef with it is that if the timer ends, you go back to the preheat cycle, which appears to be timed… So just ignore it and power through 😂

  • Great air fryer. I have this one and the tiny one (also from OzB). Only criticism is that the noise if a lot louder compared to the small one. I had to mute it…(i.e. pings not the fan).

  • +1

Finally got 1 after all these years of using a fan-forced oven. Cannot wait. Cheers OP

    • +1

You're gonna' love it. We'll never bother with our fan forced oven again.

  • According to reviews, the basket is too shallow for a whole chicken despite it being 5.7L.

    • +2

We've done pork roast and whole pizza in it. It'd fit a chicken. Super-large sized chicken might challenge it. Good excuse to split it and cook it Portuguese style.

      • Thanks for the info, I am strongly reconsidering.

  • Available on catch again, 10% off via student beans, plus shipping

  • +2

Got one of these after my Kmart one broke and couldn’t deal with the Phillips basket. It’s been incredible. It seems to take a bit longer to cook vs Kmart one. For eg frozen chips 10 min vs 13min. But it seems to cook better and the food is crispier. Highly recommend.

  • I've heard these air fryers emit something dangerous from the heating element, any legitimacy to those claims?

    • +1

      Heat? Hot air?

    • +5

Yep, its called heat and you can burn yourself if you're not careful ;-)

    • +1

      Heat is dangerous

    • It's just a small fan forced oven, the element is essenially the same as on any resistive heating appliance, maybe the concern was about the non stick coating?

    • Nope, those claims are just a load of hot air

    • Not as dangerous as misinformation online

  • Changed to this from one of the top down style ones, never looked back. Does a great job!

  • -4

Bought one last time on here, very cheaply made almost 3d printed quality.

    • +1

Disagree, love my unit, only gripe is the menu/buttons could have been better quality buttons.

The cooker, tin, bucket etc are all very well made imo.

      • -2

Then your standards must be very low, of all the air fryers I've had this has to be of the poorest quality, but hey if you like shit…enjoy

  • Got cheaper than that last time , it’s the best air fryer 🤙

  • Thanks, I've been considering an airfryer for a while and finally went for it

    • I really don't think you'll be able to see anything with all the smoke and vapour in there.

    • +1

Doesn’t seem Worth it. I mean, even if you look into the window, you’re still doing it by a timer right? So it doesn’t matter what it looks like in the window, you’re going to cook it until it beeps.

That’s my copium for the cheaper model.

    • it is on special as well

    • it is on special as well

    • +1

Did you see the double drawer one…….. That looks awesome

  • Got this in the January deal. Haven't used a pan or oven since. Cooks chicken cuts really well, giving the skin a good crunch while keeping it moist inside.

    • I'd recommend you use it once a month or so to avoid problems. My Bosch series 8 oven played up after not being used for 6 months. Threw various error codes about communication failures between panel and main board.

There had been heaps of rain over this period in QLD so the atmospheric moisture must have created problems on the circuit boards. After a few resets and uses it came back OK but I won't risk leaving it unused for extended periods in the future.

If you're in a drier area with a basic controls oven then probably not much risk.

  • i've got the Mistral 5.7 too. Interested on the reason for your upgrade. I love the Mistral and does a great job for the ~$30 spent on it.

    • I only used it a few times, found the chips cooked unevenly.

  • +1

Here to ask the most important question: "Can it fit a whole chook?"

  • Anyone know where this is made?

    • I'm 99% confident it's from China.

      • -1

ok cheers, can't seem to find it anywhere!

        • Unfortunately China makes 99% of these items because they have the scale and capacity to do so at the right price.

It would be $300 if it was made in Japan. And it would be advertised 'Made in Japan', just like Bosch advertise 'Made in Germany' for the better line of products.

          • -1

@JimB: Yep, very true. I've got a made in japan rice cooker, so far worth the price. Just would be nice to get the golden combo of cheap and not made in china!

            • +1

@bangabargain: Yeah that ain't going to happen.

Having said that, China can and do make very high quality products. It's just that people don't want to pay a high price if it's made in China.

Unless they have no other options- I don't hear anyone complaining about the quality of iPhones.

  • I wouldn't buy an airfryer that didn't have a separate mesh basket to the outer pot.

The double basket allows you to quickly toss chips to cook them evenly and once done dump all the chips into the bowl (without spilling oil or the bottom tray falling out).

Can't do that if you just have a tray at the bottom.

I was gifted a Kogan air fryer and was surprised that more air fryers. Build quality is on par with Lada cars but in terms of cooking, all air fryers are very similar- heating element and fan.

    • I have used both, this type and the Phillips.

I prefer the Instant version, the Phillips is wonky, complex and smaller size for size.

Plus this Instant is about a third the price of a Phillips.

      Both good though.

  • Bought one , happy so far. just done easy stuff so far, chips , some dumplings, croissants. all really nicely done on outside and moist on the inside.

Initial smell is pretty toxic so do a few test runs before putting actual food in it. This seems to be the cause of a fair few neg reviews.

Slightly disappointed that tray depth is smaller on inside than expected, especially given the whole unit is so massive. A whole chook seems unlikely , maybe a tiny one would fit. Chips are great, but i can appreciate the benefits of a basket type model for serving etc.

Overall im happy for the price. just have to work out some proper meals so i’m not eating chips and dim sims 5 times a week.

  • The lifespan of an air fryer can vary depending on various factors such as the brand, model, usage frequency, and maintenance. On average, an air fryer can last for about 3 to 5 years with proper care and maintenance.

Regular cleaning of the air fryer is essential to extend its lifespan. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions on usage and maintenance, such as avoiding abrasive cleaners, using the correct temperature and time settings, and avoiding overloading the fryer basket.

Additionally, factors like the quality of the components and the level of usage can also affect the longevity of an air fryer. If an air fryer is used frequently or for extended periods, it may wear out sooner than one that is used less often.

Overall, while there is no fixed lifespan for an air fryer, taking good care of it and using it appropriately can help prolong its useful life.
