Where Can I Find Broken Laptops in Melbourne?

I need a few laptops for electronic projects. Don't need a functioning keyboard or screen…etc.
Pretty much just need the (functional) motherboard as a cheap raspberry pi replacement.

Where can I get (virtually) free broken laptops from Melb?

Thanks for helping out!

Some officeworks have open e-waste disposal bins that are located in the front of the store. Maybe you can ask a team member to fish one out for you? Their locations are listed at https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/residents/waste-recycling/P…

or you can go on gumtree / fb marketplace and advertise your own broken pc / e-waste collection, and you can go and collect it from people yourself.

Check Facebook groups called “hard rubbish rescue”. I’ve seen loads listed on the Merri-bek one over the last few months, but you can also post requesting them.

If you’re south East, the tip on FTG Road has them. You do need to ask the workers there. The other day I was taking cardboard boxes there, and they found some skateboards, asked them if I could have one and they gave it to me

Not allowed to go tip fishing or mining nowadays.

Councils have been opening up shops for safety and revenue raising.

Problem is they dont usually send computers there citing identity fraud concerns.

Instead they either end up being collected by refurbishing and recycling businesses, or are sent to landfill.

Grey's flogs off "as is" laptops from time to time.

Best place is to ask friends/family. Most people don't chuck out broken stuff, but keep it until its virtually worthless. If you get it from them you not only get something that might still be fairly recent, but also you get a description of what the problem is.

After that it's pretty much a free for all. You can try looking up people who deal in ewaste (like this guy). I know he buys scrap laptops for $2, but he probably wouldn't sell them to you for less than $20 unless he liked you. And there's no way of what parts work and what don't

Some universities have e-reuse programs. Call and ask for the ones they can't refurbish.
