Bunnings FREE trailer hire

Hi,
Bunnings say you can hire their trailer for free 2 hours, $100 deposit. (Perth)
Do they actually check whether you're making a purchase that warrants using a trailer? Or can you use the trailer for other purposes?
I'm after some input before I embarrass myself :P Would be good to save myself hiring a trailer for $80 or so.

As usual with these things, it depends on how bothered the customer service person is but last time we grabbed a trailer for some items, they wanted to see the payment receipt.

    • they wanted to see the payment receipt.

I didn't make my purchase until after I hooked up the trailer…

Just go buy like a $10 length of pvc pipe and return it later if any dramas with the attendant

    • or a 99 cent bucket.

Bunnings say you can hire their trailer for free 2 hours,

Yes, it's always been like that as far back as I can remember….

Also, no deposit necessary if you have a Powerpass…

This is at pretty much any bunnings store. Example

Customers can arrange to borrow one of our courtesy trailers to get their purchases and large items home from Bunnings. This is free service and trailers are available for two hours.

All Hire Shop products require a $100 deposit. Please see our Hire Shop terms and conditions for more information.

  • Unless the T&C have been changed it's any purchase though it's obviously intended for large items. Fair few years ago a mate and I borrowed one to pick up a dining table they'd bought from gumtree. Purchased a moving blanket, went and got the trailer. The staff member wasn't too impressed but there wasn't anything they could do.

just buy a door and youre all good

I've had used their courtesy trailer many times.

Some staff just provide the trailer without asking for a receipt and some do.

For the ones that ask for receipt and when i dont have one, I simply say that i need the trailer first before i buy the item as i want to make sure it (trailer) is available - no point buying if i can't take the item home.

Basically this….. If you NEED a trailer to take stuff home, no point in finding out there isnt one after the fact!

Yeah, imagine how infuriating it'd be if you drove (say, an hour) all the way to Bunnings to buy long timber/pipe, bags of cement or whatever… and some pitiful scumbag had taken the last Courtesy Trailer for personal use.

What kind of selfish lowlife does that stuff?

        • you drove (say, an hour

Who lives an hour away from bunnings!? They are everywhere.

What kind of selfish lowlife does that stuff?

I understand your point. But my comment still applies even in your 'example'. Imagine how infuriating you'll be to go all the way to Bunnings to buy long timber/pipe, bags of cement or whatever, pay for it, only to find out the trailer wasn't free when you went to get it and you had to return it all. Hence why its best to ask BEFORE you buy stuff.

@JimmyF: Many people live outside metro areas where Bunnings proliferate.

My point is that you can't book a trailer ahead.
On more than one occasion I've had to abandon plans because there's no trailer available.
The knowledge that at least one may be in the hands of some clown playing games to save a few bucks is aggravating.

              @AnneThrope:

Always the pitfall of something 'free', even for the clowns trying to get a free trailer hire.

You could go to a Bunnings that rents the utes out instead and book one of them. That way you know you won't miss out!

    • Also, depending on the store, if you hire it late in the day - 30-60min prior to close - they may let you keep it overnight and return when the store opens the next day - which is 8/9am on Sat/Sun.

Is this the same for the van hire? We want to hire a van for a couple of hours to pick up a TV - do you need to purchase something at Bunnings to hire a van?

    • +3

Pretty sure van/ute hire isn't the same, as they are through a third party you can hire them and do what you wish with them just like hiring from Hertz or any other mob.

      • Awesome thank you!

Purchase a long length of PVC pipe. Do what you have to. Return the pipe for a refund.

    • Mate, you need to be careful, if you don't have a six pack with only hi vis over it or the lady serving you is not one of the young uni casual, you'll be rejected straight away. Last time I bought a fair few of them, the lady just didn't want to budge until I pointed out out to her that I didn't buy just one pipe.

  • Buy just 1 2 by 4
when returning the trailer ask for a refund.
Tell them you were related to Robert B.

We did once around a decade ago to get a large item home. No issues; can't remembered whether we had to buy sth as proof on not. If you do, buy the biggest plastic pot that won't fit in the boot.

Remember, when reversing with a trailer, do the opposite to what you'd do with a car. Watch an early episode of Clarkson's Farm for example of how tough it is if you're doing it for the first time.

I'm sure you can play the hire and return game, but the trailers are complimentary with purchases made at Bunnings (intended for large items from the trade/garden area).
Otherwise for personal use its $39 for 4 hours from memory for the larger dual axle (the only one I've hired personally) and a little less for the standard single axle.
Been a powerpass member for a long time and have come to know most of the trade people at my local bunnings but have still been asked to pay when using solely for non-Bunnings related trips. Have asked to keep the trailer for a couple extra hours to get personal things done after buying material and they happily agreed though.

  • Do they take a photo of your driver's licence for the trailer hire?

    • I'd say so. Can't do a Mad Max dash with the trailer and end up with a free trailer.

      • $100 deposit needed. I guess that’s still a bargain

      • Damn!
It would have been perfect behind my V8 Interceptor!

  • If it is free, is it really a 'hire', or is it merely a 'loan'?
