PS4 Upgrade Games on PS5

Hi Brainstrust.

I just want to check this is right… if I buy a PS4 game that says it includes a PS5 upgrade, there’s no difference between the PS5 labelled game and the PS4 one once you’ve done the upgrade online is there?

The reason I’m asking is that secondhand, games like Gran Turismo 7 PS4 badged games are like up to half the price of their PS5 cousins…

Why?

Yeah it doesn't actually use the data on the disc in that scenario I think.. just uses it to prove ownership and downloads the game.

I'm not too sure either, but I also think this is the case too. It will ask you if you want to download the PS5 version and once done you can choose out of the two I think (but must have disk inserted).

This is correct. There's no "PS5 patch" persay, it's a full download of the PS5 version.

You still need the PS4 disc inserted for authentication.

Grab turismo does not include a free upgrade. Horizon FW does.

  • Grab turismo does not include a free upgrade

This is the right answer, and is also one reason why the PS4 version of GT7 is so much cheaper — the other reason is that people like the look of having a PS5 disc case. There are some games with free upgrades, but there's also heaps of games that charge you either a small or a large fee to upgrade to the PS5 version.

(oops meant to reply to CascadeHush, accidentally posted at the top level instead, soz)

    • Oops I negged you both and then realised what you meant. Sorry. Now I can’t undo!

      • No worries — yeah it's annoying that you can't undo comment votes, I dunno why they changed that.

        • Just checked on your comment. Can change it but once you refresh the page you can’t. You can revoke the vote from the votes tab though

  • So many games don't have a free upgrade. Some games don't even have an upgrade path at all, like Persona 5. When you buy a PS5 you should buy a jug of lube at the same time, because Sony won't bother using any on you.

    • Well Sony have left it up to the developer unlike Microsoft who have said that developers have to support the various xboxes. So if Persona 5 doesn't have a upgrade path that's up to the developer.

OTOH the Playstation store has a bad rep for developer relations, so maybe they just don't think it's worth the bother.

Personally I've been very happy to get PS4 Pro upgrades for many of my games, since I didn't have a pro it was a nice bump up. I did buy a few games that are now part of the PS Plus Extra thing-a-ma-jig, so that's money down the drain.

At least we did get backwards compatibility this time. I skipped the PS3 generation due to that mess.

As things stand now, I won't buy games from the Playstation store. I will buy the occasional disk knowing I can resell it, but if the games aren't included in the subscription I couldn't be bothered taking the risk that one day it will be free.

  • Also recently upgraded.
Anyone know why Fallout 4 doesn't work on PS5 ?
Also, just found out how tedious the process is to update, save, and transfer data.

Xbox is probably the better platform for Fallout series, seeing as Microsoft own the ip, studio, and distributor.

Xbox isn’t going to be better for games released prior to the buyout.

    • I didn't know it didn't work? FWIW apparently its getting a PS5 upgrade likely in 2023: https://kotaku.com/fallout-4-ps5-xbox-series-x-free-upgrade-…

    • Anyone know why Fallout 4 doesn't work on PS5 ?

What's not working for you? The game works fine for me on PS5 via PS4 backwards compatibility mode, but it's currently stuck at ~1440p/30fps, though Bethesda said that a PS5 60fps patch is coming at some point, most likely this year.

      • Error: Can't Start Game or Application.

I used a Brand New WD Slim HDD, used the PS4 to Format it, used the PS4 to (very slowly) move most of my PS4 Games to it, then plugged the External HDD to the PS5 which got recognised. Used a USB Flash to move my Game Save States to the PS5 internal.

I also used my brother's copy of MW22 (PS5) to install and download the game. Then I went to play it with my disc (PS4) but it failed. Even though the PS4 Disc supports the game on the PS5. At least, that's what it says on the booklet.

Potentially I need to delete Fallout 4 from the External HDD, and delete MW22 from the Internal SSD. Then put the Fallout 4 Disc, and have it download the game from PSN, which would take at least half-hour. And then try to transfer the Fallout 4 game into the External HDD, if it hasn't stored there initially. Meanwhile, putting in the MW22 Disc should use the PS4 Licence and prompt me to download MW22 from PSN (probably the PS5 version). This process takes around 2 hours. Call of Duty is basically the worst game, not sure why I bother.

To make matters worse, I used to have FTTP, but currently "in-between" different providers.

  • Ok. That makes sense
