I Bought a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (Demo) - Good Deal?

So I bought a Jeep Gladiator yesterday. Paid the $500 holding deposit and have until today 5pm to cancel.

This is a Demo vehicle with 2000kms. I have not been able to negotiate much at all. They are saying it’s already hugely discounted.

I just wanted to get a second opinion here.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon MY22, built May 22. 2000kms, $79,000. Rego till Nov 23.

I did look on Carsales etc and can’t find any similar vehicle below $80k.

I guess I just want the peace of mind that this is a good deal.

    piece of mind

Classic jeep talk. You'll fit right in.

      • +81

        That makes sense. Cheers

        • +5

          😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

        • +4

jees. They walked right into that one, huh

      • +44

I think the comment was made because it’s ‘peace of mind’. Saying piece of mind indicates you’ve maybe lost a little bit of it.

        • +2

Maybe just an iron maiden fan.

      • +6

possible they were good 10 years ago but not now

  • +28

Car prices will fluctuate, you might see a better deal in a week, month or year. The most important thing for you is that, at this time, it's a good value today which it sounds like it is if it ticks all your boxes and you can't find cheaper!

If you pull the trigger, stop looking at them for sale

    • -1

Haha yes good advice not to keep comparing prices after I buy!

      • If it goes down in price, its a bad deal- unless you really needed it.

But then again, little on OzB is really needed…

  • What colour?

    • -1

      Grey

      • +4

        White or no deal

      • +6

Woah! Let's not get too wild here!

      • How many shades does it come in?

  • +40

I saw a Jeep doing Jeep things a week ago, stuck in the middle of the road with hazard lights on and driver cranking with no luck
    .

    • +69

At least the hazard lights still work

  • +28

You’ve paid it. You’ve already decided it’s a good deal.

Jeep gladiator however is a questionable choice.

    • -1

This changing segment will get much busier. Prices can only go down, given that competition from other zero tariff US autos, and others out of Asia could get quickly very stiff

      • -1

Not likely with the current chip shortage.

        • -2

Full year results for 2022 don't mention anything about 'shortages' 'orders', supply chain or semiconductor issues.

          https://www.stellantis.com/en/news/press-releases/2023/febru…

Supplies are long since recovered, indeed booming as producers run plants 24x7 to backfill their order books once CCP began removing local restrictions. Production has been back in anger for a long time now, and orders for backlogged customers were supplied overnight by air, once production was back online. This was all last year.

          • @resisting the urge: Nope, I have relatives working in a well-known Japanese automotive company and the briefing they got 2 weeks ago is that chip shortage won't end until mid 2024.

Just have a look at carsales.com.au, last time you could find heaps of dealer demo cars ready to go. Now its mainly to order.

            • @mrvaluepack: That's a different company, and Japanese. There are many differences between a Japanese OE and a Jeep not just suppliers, logistics and order scheduling. The cause of the delay could even be political.

  • +3

    Rego till Nov 22.

I would ask for a full year of rego, since you're saying it's not registered …

  • +45

It’s a Jeep, of course it’s not a good deal. And $80k for a Jeep? Just… why? Did they accidentally slip a zero in there somewhere? You owned another Jeep and you want to go back for a second round?

    • +4

      But… She bought a Jeep!

      • +1

Yes Michael, I bought a jeep

    • -8

I forget, are you the Camry recommender?
      Nothing wrong with Jeep.

      • This is why OzB needs a laugh react button.

    • +1

You owned another Jeep and you want to go back for a second round?

Some people are into humiliation, submission, etc. Whatever floats their boat, I suppose.

  • +6

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon MY22, built May 22. 2000kms, $79,000. Rego till Nov 22.

Two points. Must have done a lot of demos @2,000ks in 4 months and, it's almost 12 months old. Oops, a 3rd point. The warranty starts the day it was registered.

  • +6

    x2 $80k for a Jeep?

Seriously? You know they were pushing them into the ocean at the fall of Saigon

    • +38

Ironically, it had nothing to do with the fall of Saigon, it was just because they were Jeeps.

    • Love mine

  • +23

You aren't buying the jeep, the jeep is buying you.

  • +4

    This is my morning coffee…

  • +9

Can you request they make the wheelbase longer?

    • +5

They would have, but you’d need a medium rigid licence if they made it any longer.

      • +7

Going to need a bigger b̶o̶a̶t̶ Tow Truck

        • Doh! I don't think the doors come off tow trucks

      • +2

I think the standard ramp over angle is 3°, quite impressive.

    • +3

its perfect for that 80klm daily drive.

  • +3

    I'll take the $500 thanks…

    • +1

      Can I phone a friend….?

    • Man, will this guy wish he'd just lost his deposit after a year or two…

Only spending $500 to get out of buying an 80k jeep is one hell of a bargain.

  • +7

Not sure if they were talking bollocks but a friend was telling me recently that a friend of theirs Grand Cherokee needed a new crank angle sensor. Apparently it's a transmission out job and cost $4k at a dealership to replace a $150 part.

    • +5

Sounds about right for a Jeep…..

      • +5

Dealerships are proven liars. Esp C(ries)ler ones.

Better to take it (and a new sensor) to a proven good mechanic. Of course, its probably not the sensor, more likely a connector full of water, or something else on the CAN. People drive them into water, which they should do alright. But given that it is american electronics + manufacturing means it needs a good inspection because its likely to be a simple cause that needs an experienced pro, not just an apprentice with a port scanner

        • -1

          something else on the CAN

Crank sensors aren't on the can.

          • @brendanm: Indeed they are not. But the modules reading them are, and may suffer from comms or supply voltage troubles, and thus log errors incorrectly. One module with a bad earth, may lead the ECU to believe a sensor or three are misbehaving.

          • @brendanm:

Crank sensors aren't on the can.

Actually some of them are. Its quite rare and only recent. Bosch have one for Audi that sends out the engine angle to the ECU over CAN. So the sensor itself does the heavy lifting of engine sync that the ECU used to have to do. They even use it on their R8 GT3 racecar. But when it goes down its not as simple to replace as just swapping the ECU. It took one of them out of the B12Hr a few years ago.

Whereas they could have just kept it old skool with cam and crank into the ECU and had a live spare crank sensor, which is quite common on these motorsport ECUs.

            • @stumo: Got a link for that?

              • @brendanm: Nah I don't have a link. IIRC it was introduced to make auto stop/start easier.

        • +1

Better to take it (and a new sensor) to a proven good mechanic

Still not going to change the fact you have to remove the transmission to replace the part ;)

But given that it is american electronics + manufacturing means

Nuff said, this is why you don't buy a Jeep…..

          • @JimmyF: Maybe they don't have to, as

            • the sensor may not be faulty, you just need to find the real cause
            • the sensor may be replaceable without following the Crying procedure, plenty of times with modern production methods there are innovative approaches to gaining access.

But agreed, if its reading off the crank, it'll be pretty hard. Still you never know, maybe it can be done with a long tool, a light and slipping the trans back just a little…

      • You mean "sounds about right for a dealer"

  • +12

I Bought a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (Demo) - Good Deal?

Is it EVER a good deal to buy a Jeep?

  • +9

    I bought a Jeep Gladiator

    🤦‍♀️

  • +16
    • +7

      This car's givin' me anxiety
I must have bought the citrus variety

      Gold

    • +4

      From the comments section:

Literally from the day I was born, my Dad has always told me that I am never to buy a Chrysler product under any circumstances. Best advice I've ever been given.

      Excellent!

    • I know one of the guys who is in this music video…
Unfortunately he lost his job as it was partly filmed at a shopping center, and unfortunately they were going to have a Jeep dealership (stealership) set up.

      Haha.

      Good song.

      PS. The song's lyrics are true… Don't you make a mistake…

  • +13

There's always someone out there that buys a Jeep.
Gives the rest of us plenty of entertainment though.

  • +4

Wow, you could get a Hyundai Ioniq 5 for that money… and it would be like comparing a typewriter to a laptop.

    • Why would you though…?

      • +5

Why not? Ioniq was 2022 car of the year.

OP could still afford to get an Ioniq and a second hand land cruiser.

        • People believe car of year awards??? LMAO!!!!

BMW X5 won 4wd of the year once.. hahahahhahaahahahhaha

          • -1

@pharkurnell: So lets be clear… you think the Hyundai Ioniq is a bad car?

        • So your weekly repayment should comfortably be $650+whatever you're saving, not just the rent.

Car of the year award are a joke. An ionic is not going to go off-road. You may as well have suggested op get a Vespa, as it is also a vehicle that will get you to work.

          • +5

@brendanm: If it was a rental Vespa it would go offroad well… :)

          • @brendanm: Do you need lessons on correct quoting? 😉

            • +1

@Muzeeb: While it may be from a complete unrelated thread, at least it isn't in quotation marks 😂

    • That Ioniq is a strange looking vehicle though.

      • +1

meh, but I doubt it will ever be referred to as Iqoniq
        .

    • +2

Ah yes someone needing a large ute should get an Ioniq 5. Great comparison

  • +7

I have no interests in Jeeps. Not selling them. Not owning one.

Here's the facts from the 2022 JD Power survey on vehicle dependability.

    https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2022-us-vehi…

Jeep was just barely under average for dependability. It was between Mercedes Benz and Nissan. If you're talking about unreliable cars you're talking Land Rover, RAM and Volvo.

    • I thought Volvo makes the safest cars? How can they be unreliable?

      • +9

The 2 things are not related

      • +7

Pretty safe if it’s not running.

      • +1

Volvo is just Geely China cars now

      • +1

I thought Volvo makes the safest cars?

Yes, perhaps in 1990 but things have changed since. That's not to say that they make unsafe cars now, but their cars aren't known for reliability.

  • +8

I think spending $80k for an ICE car in this day and age is asking for it.

If there's none cheaper then you have a good deal.
However with the coming recession dealers will be stuck with cars a lot longer and no doubt they'll depreciate faster.

    • +4

I think spending $80k for an ICE car in this day and age is asking for it.

While I'm no lover of Just Expect Every Problems, show me the non-ICE vehicles on sale today that can do proper 4WDing and/or dual cab utility carring?

      • -6

I was more suggesting going a hybrid over the straight ICE,

GWM Tank etc. are all innovating.

        • +8

          GWM

          I'd rather buy the Jeep.

          • +3

@brendanm: Personally i'll cop a 7 year unlimited warranty on a vehicle of untested reliability over a 5 year/130,000km warranty on a known unreliable car.

            • +6

@Drakesy: Ever dealt with gwm? I wouldn't trust their warranty as far as I could throw it. I dislike jeeps, but dislike gwm more.

        • GWM Tank is a wagon, not a dual cab ute.

          • +2

@Brian McGee: TBH If we're going dual cab i'd take an overpriced reliable hilux rather than an overpriced unreliable jeep

  • Does it have roof racks?
