I Bought a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (Demo) - Good Deal?

So I bought a Jeep Gladiator yesterday. Paid the $500 holding deposit and have until today 5pm to cancel.

This is a Demo vehicle with 2000kms. I have not been able to negotiate much at all. They are saying it’s already hugely discounted.

I just wanted to get a second opinion here.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon MY22, built May 22. 2000kms, $79,000. Rego till Nov 23.

I did look on Carsales etc and can’t find any similar vehicle below $80k.

I guess I just want the peace of mind that this is a good deal.

Nah. Just take the roof off and your mates can hold the stuff.

  • +1

As above, personally would never buy a Jeep but in saying that, I think the Gladiator looks really cool haha

  • +1

You could go in any say you found it 2k cheaper, and ask for your deposit back…

They then may say they will give you 2k back… If they start getting that deposit refunded just say 'Nah, I'm not going to bother with 2k, go ahead'.

  • +6

you bought a jeep. good luck. hope your like the service centre at the dealership and have a lawyer and ACCC/Fair Trading contact ready

  • +2

    you bought a Jeep?

    • +2

      Just no.

  • +3

the new one costs only about $82,950. Not much of a discount for an ex demo.

    • Is that drive away price?

      • yep for postal code 2000.

  • +4

can't believe no one has said this yet

    Just
    Eat
    Every
    Penny

    • Just
      Expect
      Every
      Problem

      is clearer I think.

$80 grand is an incredibly high price to pay for years of stress waiting for the next huge repair bill and/or breakdown as they get more and more frequent and the resale value craters.

      • +2

we don't have enough data on OP

maybe they got deep pockets and enjoy working on fixer uppers

  • +3

Why, just why? Everyone who sees you in it will think the same.

  • +15

I saw a Jeep the other day and it was actually driving on the road rather than on a tow truck or side of the road, was so shocked I almost took a picture.

  • +7

Weird way to spell Toyota Camry.

  • +3

Not a good deal. How much do you value your time? You'll be having this sent back to get fixed in no time. Take the lost on the deposit and go and buy a more reliable car like Toyota.

  • +14

Not bad, I managed to get one for a bit cheaper last year for 72K drive away.

Mind you, mine was a Tesla Model Y and not whatever you posted.

    • Good for you, I already have a Tesla Model 3. The Jeep is for the farm.

      • +7

I assume this is some kind of hobby farm tax write off. An $80k unreliable piece of crap is not what I would want on an actual farm lol.

        • Yep hobby farm. Again personally we had a Jeep for 10years with no issues whatsoever.

        • Still loving your VL Commodore hey?

          • @bmerigan: Isn't that the only one with the nissan engine. It's probably a good car to own

      • More cents than synapses

      • If you have $80k to burn why wouldn't you just buy a secondhand 79 series Cruiser & have change for a motorbike?

  • +5

It's a Jeep and an 80K one at that.

Nothing about a Jeep is ever what anyone would consider "good".

    • -1

Mine's been perfect, and likely more comfortable and faster than the majority of cars in this forum.

  • -3

Dodged a bullet OP, it could have been a Nissan. (LOL)

Thankfully 'most' modern cars are reliable. And many makers learn & adapt from previous model issues.
There's a word of caution though,Triton owners are lucky the engines are reliable because the the so called ten year warranty doesn't cover things which may cause a downstream catastrophic failure. Like anything rubber on the engine, or the injectors. So unless you replace them religiously…………? or service via MMA every time….?
There's a lot of small print in warranties theses days.(all makes) Buyer beware.

    • +4

Not sure anyone has ever "dodged" a bullet to buy a Jeep. It is more he stepped in front a freight train to avoid that bullet.

      • Time will tell.

      • +1

Dodged a bullet but stepped on a landmine…

  • +1

    Had to google.

Is it just an extremely stretched Wrangler?

    • +7

Yes it appears it is just a Wrangler with a tray and the wheelbase of a bus.

  • +8

It's a Jeep so no. Not a good deal.
    You did ask for opinions…

  • Rates higher than Nissan Navara on Prod Review (Makes for good reading) , (3.6* Vs 3.4)and as for Nissan dealer ratings there, (under 2) wow.

  • +2

Aside from my concerns over Jeep build quality and reliability, Jeep Australia has decided to leave the country altogether and end production of right hand drive cars. Yes, there will be parts etc but I can't imagine it will make life easier in the long run with warranty and customer service.

    • Can you post an article that confirms that?

    • +2

https://www.drive.com.au/news/jeep-cherokee-farewells-austra…. Looks they are just killing the Cherokee model not the whole lineup in Australia. Also congrats to the OP ignore the haters I think you will have a lot of fun in a Rubicon gladiator

      • -1

Yes, you are correct. My apologies. I mixed this up with Chrysler, but both are owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/chrysler-brand-leaving…

I'd just be concerned about a history of poor sales volumes and the fact that FCA has already pulled a brand from the country for the same reason.

I think it's worth consideration with a purchase like this.

Not hating. Just trying to be helpful.

        • @staz you're not a hater it's fair to consider they may leave the country. If things don't improve they may skip out in the next couple years. There is just so many negative comments in the thread and I know where they came from Jeep did have massive quality issues a few years back when parent companies were passing them around. I think jeeps biggest challenge in Australia is when the Australian dollar is weak jeeps don't represent the best value

          • +1

@Fornax: Yep. All really good points. There's also a side of me that thinks, if you love it then just go and enjoy your car. They're fun and will take you places and give you amazing experiences. Not everyone has to buy Toyota ;)

  • +1

Plenty of stock for that model which means dealers will try to get rid of them. Try a car broker and I'm sure they'll be able to get you a better deal

  • Jeep - A great buy as long as you and everyone else are perfect drivers and you never crash.

    • +3

Latest "speeding is OK" thread on Ozb apparently indicates everyone else is a perfect driver. And can drive even faster with no issues.

      • +1

Safety requirements are for other people!

  • +2

OP has been offline for 10 hours. Would love to be a fly on the wall when they starting checking this thread.

    • +1

Given the amount OP paid, they might be changing their username

      • Good idea, thinking of “Trollbargain” or “IboughtaJeep”

    • +2

Checking it now… :-) usual story with Ozbargain, doesn’t matter which car I buy. But I still ask for opinions…haha

Last time was a Renault Kangoo, I got laughed at too… drove 70,000kms with it and sold it for more than I paid for and had no issues whatsoever.

      • +1

My dude. Renault Kangoo to a Jeep anything. what a laugh.

Go a corolla and you won't get laughed at.

    • +3

We have totally ruined the confirmation bias they were seeking.

  • Classic troll post 😂

  • buy a suzuki jimny and put $50k in your offset account.

    • +1

      One overpriced 4wd vs another

    • You mean 30k in the offset right?

  • Be thankful to lose your deposit!!!

Find another car. Lots of comments here, no need for me to say anything else.

    • Well… You could say something useful I guess.

      • Yeah, be thankful to only lose the deposit. Practically a get out of jail (cheap) card.

        Also, find another car.

        • What do you recommend?

  • buy a suzuki jimny +kidney belt and put $49,970 in your offset account.

    • +3

I'm surprised you think Suzuki Jimny's are under $30k these days.

      • (I don't, never did. See ryk)

  • +2

Car prices are in free fall (since lockdowns lifted) and will bottom out after Easter (they always do).

There may not be any listings under $80k (who sells a brand new car?).. doesn't mean it's worth anything like that.

Seriously, you wont get $50k for it even if you sold it next month. Absolute lunacy. Would have got more benefit if you burned the money for heat.

Jeeps are absolute trash, anyone with half an idea about cars is laughing at you behind your back.

    • -2

So many of the things you said are wrong that I'm laughing at YOU.

  • +2

    Jeep: "Don't hold back!"
    OP: "Emptying my wallet."

  • It’s got a warranty, Buy it and enjoy it!

  • $79,000. Rego till Nov 22 dam, could buy a property in Thailand Bali, or Philippines for that price and have the property work for you.

    Crazy world we live in.

    • I liked your comment….BUT…. the property isn't working for anyone, it's just earning money. Now for the segway…. a moral one, because short term rental companies like AirBnB are destroying property markets for people who live in said countries.

Lots of examples… Greece, Hawaii etc
I've noticed the same thing happening in SEA. Damn, even Australia is hammered pretty hard by it.

      https://www.neighboursnotstrangers.com/single-post/data-show…

Lots of boots on the ground information around too, here and overseas.

      • From my understanding Just like chatGpt, or BnB
with all this innovation we are forgetting how these companies got there.

For BnB a dude traveling to San Francisco leasing beds out, but taking in the advice from some stranger to do what others are not doing.

Same for open AI, they hit a wall in stagnation not able to push through until a scientist released the paper on transformers and open AI went to the moon.

So what's to be taken from this?

Well we are all individuals, we seek answers, we agree or disagree, and with limited knowledge we jump on the bandwagon where those two companies get backlash and things slowly trickle down.

Bnb at first was the golden age for most home owners sucking it up, with out consideration of the consequences or how such systems work while jumping on the band wagon.

So how would we compete with air BnB or open AI, simple educate your self towards learning marketing skills, learn web development, collaborate, learn about the local areas in those respective countries, ask what you can bring to that community while promoting it and never being complacent that such things last and just maybe you'll not be in the bucket of other people waiting for a Uber because you would have built your own system that works for you.

        • Haha ChatGPT is larping

    • +1

I'd rather own a Jeep lemon, than inflict even more foreign footprints of Straya on any of those places.

  • Mate you can’t ask about a Jeep on an Aussie page, you’ll get all the anti-Jeep sheep worked up.

  • +3

If you are given a lemon make lemonade.

    I hope you like lemonade

  • +4

You have $79,000 and you chose to spend it on THAT????

    Dear me..

  • +3

It depends on what you want in a car.

If I wanted to drop $80k on cars, I would buy two separate cars that do different things before I bought one Jeep.

    • If I wanted to drop $80k on cars, I would buy multiple cars….
      .

  • +2

    I have had 2 x Jeep Cherokee's Limited V6 2015 for near 5 years, then a 2020 to Dec 2022.
Traded it for a Nissan Navara XTS.
I would never keep a Jeep out of the warranty.
First one was ok just a wheel bearing, although I pranged it and was all under body damage took 2 months for parts and $15K thanks NRMA. V my Nissan had a small bingle not my fault too 10 days for parts was fixed in under 3 weeks.
2nd Cherokee had body computer model go in a year took them 4 visits to find problem, month for parts, had rattles inside, underneath. Dealer was great had a new loaner, I had bought 4 new cars from them.
So after that got rid of it.
No issues with the Navara not even a rattle after 16 months. First new car I have ever had and not back for some issue, and have had 15, including Honda, Mazda,Suzuki,Toyota,Ford,Jeep.
Not long before I got rid of the last Cherokee was driving around a corner on the M1and there was a car on fire, was a Jeep lol.

Disclaimer: All my cars are business related and I usually swap every 5 years.

  • Commiserations.

Imagine the awesome cars you could have bought instead. Like a Nissan Z

  • So you clearly like the Jeep as whether it's a good car or not is not up for debate.
You've done your research and found its the cheapest you could find.
What determines whether it's a good deal or not, what feedback are you after? Are you asking the forum if there's a better deal somewhere that you missed?
Or just affirmation that you bought a wonderful car for a great price that will look amazing inches away from anyone's rear bumper or on the back of any tow truck?

    • And how many Jeeps have you personally seen on the back of a tow truck not from a accident?

      • +1

7 from where they've rear ended another vehicle from tailgating, 5 no starts and 3 with gearbox issues in the last 3 months

Google Jeep reliability, there are many reports of poor reliability covering many years. Jeep management even recently apologised to Australian customers for vehicles plagued with reliability issues and their inaction to resolve them.

  • OP what colour and is it the leather trim model?
When I traded in my Cherokee for $79K I would of bought it lol in like flin.

  • +4

    Enjoy your JEEP.
    Disregard all the JEEP knockers.

I have a TJ 2 door Wrangler Sport & Grand Cherokee Limited
TJ Wrangler 1998 - 300,000km still going strong
Grand Cherokee 2015 - LOVE it

    • +3

99% of knockers would of never owned one, just repeat the MSN story's like everything else.
Like every make good and bad. I had 2 Mazda CX7 too, one good one bad.

      • +1

Total agree. 'The herd mentality 'force' is strong, with this one. The alarm bells are not warranted, given the amount of actual previous owners commenting , and this is a later model, anyway.
That said, $80K is more than my budget will flex to, for any car.

    • Agreed, I have 2015 Grand Cherokee as well and the only thing I've had to do is replace the battery.
Also JK 3.6 with 230k and not one issue.
And my 1942 model is still going strong as well for 80 years old (not technically a Jeep though).

The 3.6L in the Gladiator is the final evolution of a 10+ year old engine design and well proven to run 300k+ without issue. Add to that Dana diffs and a ZF 8HP, I've not heard of any issues with the Gladiator.

      • No that's not actually correct the 3.6l has a ton of issues and the use of plastic parts throughout is crap

        main issues with this engine

        Cylinder head failure
        Cam follower fault eg ticking
        Water pump seizing
        Radiator problems
        Oil pump defects

        Just google jeep 3.6l problems

        https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/jeep-gladia…

  • +1

Just realised, you would've paid a luxury car tax on top of that 79k so it ends up being above 80k. Hope it works well for you. If you wanted an unreliable 4wd could've gone with a land rover, would maybe justify the lct.

    • Wouldn't a dual cab ute be LCT exempt?

      • +1

A proper Ute, makes sense, these things aren't for work. But I suppose technically it can be seen as a "utility" vehicle and be exempt cos of the tray. Speaking of which who in their right minds would risk their livelihood on this thing.

  • +3

Bought a 2nd hand Jeep once. Engine died on me after 2 years and cost $8K to replace it. Let's say that was an expensive lesson to learn about Jeeps.

    • Plenty of ppl in the same boat with hundreds of vehicle types. Maybe the previous owner was the problem?
      Impossible to crystal ball gaze.
"oops I test drove it without putting the sump plug back in". Never mind"

Try replacing an engine in any modern car, esp diesel. K'ching.

This is a new car with warranty.

  • +1

Damn that's one way to put 80k to waste
