ASRock Z690 Taichi LGA 1700 Intel Z690 SATA 6GB/S DDR5 ATX Intel Motherboard $429 + Delivery @ BPC Tech

60

Been waiting for this motherboard to drop below the $500 mark. Usually its been hovering around $580. Not the best reviews for a Z690 but i like the aesthetic of this board and this is the premium end for ASRock for their Z690 range.

Please note that this board takes DDR5 RAM. Some of the other Z690s still take DDR4.

  • Not the best reviews for a Z690

What seems to be the problem?

Layout of one of the fan headers and one less M.2 slot (3) than the competition (4). Not deal breaker for me but it was when it first came out with an $800 price tag and competing with ASUS ROG and MSI Mag.

It was just worse than the other high end Z690 boards. Honestly for around this price, it's not bad at all. I'd personally still would choose a more budget oriented option like a MSI Z690 Pro-A. You get basically an adequate VRM and most if not all the same features for like $100 less.

Or I'd go for the Z690 Aorus Master for $70 more than this board at Mwave, you get 10 gigabit ethernet and it's just a better board overall really. For instance the Taichi has 8 rear USB ports in total including the two Type C ports. Whereas the Aorus Master has 10 including 2 Type Cs, I mean it's just little things. If you're willing to put up with them then not bad for the price, but there's better budget options.

Also I've had Asrock boards before and now I just personally avoid them now their quality is definitely worse than MSI or ASUS, versus Gigabyte they're about on par, maybe I'd give the slight edge to Gigabyte too though. Asrock I just hate their BIOS (the layout just sucks and it's not very intuitive to use, lots of submenus and options without descriptions) and their memory compatibility was garbage, at least it was on 7th Gen Intel. My 7700K Extreme4 system wouldn't even boot some JEDEC 2400 MT/s speed DDR4 DIMMs I had and even getting another set of RAM at 3200 MHz XMP to apply was wonky, you'd have to apply it like 3-4 times before it finally worked and then you had to not touch the BIOS again for it to boot like normal every time after. Mind you it wasn't the IMC (integrated memory controller) on the CPU being garbage because I put this same CPU in other boards with the same RAM (even the JEDEC 2400 DIMMs) and they worked just fine. Maybe my board was faulty? Not sure. Either way, after that I said never again to Asrock, especially after their main draw is "budget" boards, of which 90% of the time the VRM is inadequate and overheats. But their high end boards are fine VRM wise, but lack on small features compared to the competition. If you can get a high end Asrock board at the right price, they're fine to use. I've since moved onto MSI who seem to be on top of the game when it comes to motherboards as of late, but no company is perfect, not even ASUS and their premium pricing.

  • I just got this ASUS DDR5 board for a bit more than the deal post, it seems pretty good feature wise. Link

    • I'm looking to upgrade from i7-7700k to i5-12600k, not the latest tech but better than what I have.

I was looking at the Asus TUF.. It can be had for $459 at Centrecom to save the Amazon US shipping, unless you were able to get it cheaper? Mind if I ask how much you got it for?

      • Nah the one from Centrecom is the DDR4 version, the DDR5 one from Amazon was $459.75 (with prime free shipping)

        • I see I see :)

Doesn't help that they name it the same product

          • @Porker: Its confusing, it just added "D4" in the product model…

          • @Porker: Was real confusing trying to find reviews, I couldn’t even find the DDR5 version in Oz.
