ASUS RT-AX86S AX5700 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Gaming Router $209 + Delivery ($0 with OnePass) @ Catch

50

Looking for a replacement for D7000 and find this deal. It seems the best deal so far.

This model is a bit simplified compared with AX86U.

Note: This is the ASUS RT-AX86S. This is not the ASUS RT-AX86U. The main differences are in the CPU, RAM, 2.5Gb LAN port and USB ports. The Wi-Fi on the ASUS RT-AX86S and ASUS RT-AX86U is the same.

ASUS RT-AX86S
Dual-Core CPU @ 1.8GHz.
512MB RAM.
2.5Gb WAN/LAN = removed.
1x USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 + 1x USB 2.0.

ASUS RT-AX86U
Quad-Core CPU @ 1.8GHz.
1GB RAM.
2.5Gb WAN/LAN.
2x USB 3.2 Gen 1x1.

  • Out of stock. This product has SOLD OUT!

    • Ordered one few minutes before this post… sold out too quick….

  • Very hot price

  • Sorry me ask dumb dumb
    Question.
Why would RAM in a router? Especially 512mb or 1Gb?
And dual or quad core CPU?

    • +2

as with anything electronic, more RAM and faster CPU is better to handle more devices that are using the data at one time.
if you have 2-3 devices only, you dont need that much power but for 13-15 its good to have heaps

On router VPN encryption. Needs a decent CPU. Same for firewall and routing in a high throughput environment.

  • OiC… me not so dumb dumb now.

  • Damn. I needed to replace my RT-AC86U. Brand new. 2.4ghz stops working every few days. Still visible but drops all connections. Needs a reset. Amazon refuse to replace it. They are forcing a refund. Got that at $191 so not impressed.

    • BTW obviously they should replace yours, but my current AC68U router is one that someone threw out because of this error, turned out it was easy to fix by adding a cooling fan. The radios shut down when they reach a certain temperature. Have a look in the GUI (may need Merlin firmware) to see what temperature it's at. If they give you the refund but don't need the thing back, try bunging a 12v fan on the back.

Have an RT-AC68U running Merlin. Awesome device but range was an issue. Bought the 86U to create a mesh network. Thought to run that solo to ensure no issues. Bam. Issues. Perhaps I should load the 86U with Merlin but time's the issue - takes days before the symptom. So could be weeks and Amazon have lodged the return. Arrrg.

    • How did Amazon verify the fault that led them to conclude that they will refund you the cost? Did you have to send the unit back to them for assessment?

      • They didn't verify. Gave them the case # from Asus. Said it can be returned but not replaced and started a return. I asked for a replacement and they rejected that saying it's not possible, which I don't get. It's an Amazon AU item.

… Apparently return was "the only system option".

FFS that was quick. I had an alert set and everything

  • Was just commenting that ASUS might be making way for new models, a lot of price drops atm including the RT-AX89U Note - that's the UK version!!

  • My ASUS RT-AX86U just died.. missed out. dammit.. great router.

    • +2

can't be that great if it just died?

    • How long have you had it before it died?

    • Did you perhaps mean AC86U?

    • nothing with that AX86S.. different sellers on the marketplace I guess. Although AX86U vs AX86U Pro are different - the latter a little faster & more expensive (and some other differences with ports)

      • That's right, different sellers on Catch marketplace. Thanks.
