What's The Point of CamelCamelCamel

Time and time again I get an alert from CamelCamelCamel (set for AU $$$) when a price watch is triggered, only to find that the price is not available at amazon.com.au

Again this morning:

Similarly I often find that when you guys post an amazon "bargain" I get a very different price. Case in point:

Sunbeam Planetary Mixmaster The Tasty One Black $89.50 Delivered @ Amazon AU https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765489
I click the link and get $249 + delivery on amazon (prime).

Perhaps I need to change my socks & underwear.

Make sure you are logged in to Amazon.com.au site and have set an AU default address. Sometimes items on offer sell out quick like that Sunbeam mixer. If it does, it'll show the next available which might be a third party with a higher price. So that's what you're seeing, you're just too late.

Camelx3's point is to show you price trends and alerts so you click through their affiliate links to generate them money.

    • I agree with you, but I also get OP's point - I have had a couple of occasions on some products I'm tracking where Camelx3 is showing higher the current price on Amazon. Yes, sometimes there's limited quantities etc and the user is just too slow/late, but sometimes I think Camelx3 is out of date.

Limited quantities on special, so by the time you click through, you missed it

Try the Corelle stores in the DFOs. Sometimes it is on special.

The point of CamelCamelCamel is to tell you the amazing price that you just missed out on for something you've been watching for ages.

Yeh I also add everything to the Amazon wishlist and quickly scan the whole list bi-daily to see if prices have dropped

For most of the items I've tracked, I would be able to buy them at the linked price. Sometimes, I've seen an alert email and then a deal posted on Ozbargain a bit later.

Think about what CCC is trying to do, scrape every Amazon listing as often as possible. No chance you get live or up to date data there. They can only check a certain listing every so often. If it is once every 48hrs-72hrs or so, you will def miss a short sale or quick price drop.

  • I think camel prices are mostly irrelevant. If you can't kick ass the price with double and triple stackers, I'd give up the game.
Definitely short-term bait deals should not even be recorded.

  • I use CCC heavily both for planned purchases, and for making 28 Degrees price protection claims in the year post-purchase.

You certainly notice it missing a few short-lived price drops, but as 7h44m above has mentioned there are technical reasons why its not always possible.

I've also noticed a huge number of false alerts on one or two high value items. They are nearly always from new sellers with atrocious feedback scores and items allegedly shipped directly (rather than being fulfilled by Amazon), rather than a more believable price from a known entity. I suspect they're scammers trying to win the buy box by having the lowest price, and are shuffled off the platform once too many reports come in. Given the popularity and name recognition of Instant Pot, and the price delta, this may be the case here.

  • Again this morning:

    CCC - InstantPot Airfryer $179 - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nsJfhLX50pMZRn_k4dJqNZxSkTb…

    Actual on Amazon AU, $224 - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1THoqIeWkILnJtEYpqRglGf3v01u…

CCC is set to AU $

    • That's because it hasn't searched the price since Feb 14 for some reason
