235k QFF for 1 Night at Park Hyatt Sydney with Opera House View

I have amassed over 800K QFF points since I started churning credit cards.
Checking for around the world trip option, it seems the opportunity is very bleak especially with my bronze Qantas membership.
I have checked a Qantas international return ticket for me and wife the other day, but seats weren't available during holiday seasons at all.

So I am thinking of using points for staying at 5 star hotel in Sydney.
I have checked price/ points for one night stay at Park Hyatt Sydney with opera house view on the Vivid festival weekend, it costs 235K QFF points 3 ppl, which is a lot but I think family will never forget the experience.

What do you think?
Do you think it is acceptable?

I mean, do you really need to take the teenage boy?

Why not just have a dirty weekend with the wife?

    • OP is looking for help as they are indecisive. They didn't come here for this. 😉

    • Can’t leave him alone home. He’s a teen, who knows what he’ll do.

        Watch porn, eat your snacks

Cmon, I'm sure you've brought him up well enough that he can spend 1 night by himself

          It might be Unacceptable.

      • That's not how it works.

They will forget. Only memories people remember are stuff like going sailing or a houseboat.

    • I’ve stayed this hotel in Bangkok and the iconic Wat Arun temple view in the room, it was so great and memorable and worth every baht.

I guess you meant 800,000 in points… 800 points wouldn't get you a Mentos mint at the check in counter…

  • call dirty Mike and the boys

318k points gets you an around-the-world trip (Oneworld Classic Award) in business class. It's not easy to find flight options but well worth it, and so, SO much more valuable than one night in a Sydney hotel in my opinion.

    • That’s the main reason I kept churning many cc.
But I can’t find any ticket and it’s bloody hard to search for it.

    • Any tips on getting on this?

From what I've seen you generally need to be a high status Qantas member and call.

Look to start your trip in SE Asia

The availability ex Australia is the worst part

I would no way spend that many points on the hotel.

FWIW I just upgraded a Melb-Per flight to business class for 10,900 points which is basically a $2000 ticket on a good day.

Terrible value to use on the hotel, may as well just pay cash.

How much is that if paying all cash? What is the points to $ ratio? Honestly, I would keep waiting for around the world trip.

    • I know I know but I just couldn’t find any ticket for my like.

I was able to find first class to LA and Dubai so I booked them, I'm bronze also. Just look harder and probably divert to different locations as a starting point.
If paid cash the first class flights would be ~$35000, used around 350k points - so 10c per point.

    • It would be easier to find for one person but hard for two or three.

      • I am also bronze and booked my wife and I on business class to europe for next year on china airlines. You have to look a year in advance and use the multi city search tool. Round the World will be much difficult and requires lot of planning.

If you want an empirical way to figure out if it's worth it you need to first decide how much it cost you to get those points.

Let's say you earned 93k points and paid $300 annual fee for it. Worst case, you also spent $30 on surcharges to meet the minimum spend.

    93k / $330: you paid $1 for 281 points.

Assuming no offers, you're paying for the hotel in pure points for cash conversion, which is typically $1 per 155 points (it's also the worst value).

However, if you can't see yourself using the points in a better way, or you have enough to 'burn', go for it. You can't do worse, and it's just sitting there anyway.

Who’s gonna pay annual fee $300 for 93k?
      My latest two cc churns;

      1. NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Credit Card
70,000 Qantas Points (Annual fee $150 was fully refunded after cancelling less than 30 days)

      2. CBA Ultimate Awards Credit Card With Qantas points. Get 70,000 bonus Qantas Points if spend $5,000 within 90 days of activation.
        $30 Qantas rewards fee.
$35 monthly card fee waived if you spend at least $2,500 in your statement period.

No need to get defensive. I gave an example. Not every bank gives you the annual fee back. Especially if you churn all of the offers.

Lol… who’s gonna blow 235k in FF points for a one night stay in a hotel?

  • I can get that room for $1385 including free breakfast on the 26th of may for 1 night. Park Hyatt Sydney Room, 1 King Bed (Opera View)

    Probably not worth the points.

    • Not worth $138.50…. let alone 1300

Surely im on the wrong planet if people pay $1000+ for 1 night in a room without a supplied hooker…. ????

      • Not at that hotel but sure there are plenty where I would pay that much. Especially if it's a work expense.

    What do you think?
Do you think it is acceptable?

    NO !!!

    Definitely not.

  • +1

If you fly, there's no way it's worth spending that many points on a room for one night. The value in using it for an upgraded plane ticket is so much higher. But if you're not a flyer, then it's a different story.

  • +1

235k QFF can get $2350 which would be worth more than the 5 star hotel room?
The only issue is you have to deal with potential trouble of selling points

  • Check in 13.00, check out next day 10.00am. What do you thin will get for that time? Experience? View of the opera house?

For those points buy something from Qantas store if you can't get that flight around the world.

  • 235k for one night at the park hyatt??

i have so many ideas, i'd jump on the Indian Pacific, and get a better experience before going near that hotel

  • Couldn’t you even get a better deal by getting gift cards from the Qantas store next time there’s a sale?

  • What's the cash cost of the room at that time?

When I used to stay there for work the cash cost (granted, outside of Vivid) Was maybe $8-900.

I find redemptions on Qantas Hotels are roughly 0.85-0.95c/point - not as good as classic reward redemptions but better than cash/gift cards.

  • Use points for flights. Cash for hotels (using discount codes, cash back, etc)

  • How much time do you think you will spend awake in the hotel room? Probably not much if you are taking your teen along with you. Seems like a waste of money (points) to me.

  • Waste of points, you'd be better off just using the points for gift cards if flights isn't your thing. You could get the same room discounted for cash if you play your cards right.

  • Thank you all for the comments.
I decided to book Rydges World Square Sydney at 46k a night on the weekend instead and hope this is acceptable.
The idea is my missus wants to go for Vivid festival but not wishing to drive back home. You're right, 235K for a night's stay is way over fetched (no bargain) and I will look to use the points for flight upgrade in future.

    • For 46k points you could’ve flown business class to just about anywhere in aus (return)

      • Look if OP is happy, hes happy.
Upgrades are a pain recently, I have been denied 65% of all J -> F upgrades recently being WP. And domestic business on QF402 has never occurred this year. Classic Reward Requests have been a pain, all of them during Christmas has been denied. And all of them have been denied with more than 2 pax.

  • Out of curiosity do you only have QFF or do you also have VFF points?

  • Love people who redeem their QFF points for terrible value redemptions like hotels.

Keeps more flight redemptions available for the rest of us.

Keep up the good job, OP.
