Fake Brake Callipers Cover or Paint?

Looking to make my car look more sporty (it's a Elantra SR turbo).

Painting the calliper professionally will cost around $250-$500 in Brisbane, but seems like it doesn't last long even if heat resistant paint is used? And I'm looking at Aooa brake callipers cover which seems to be very durable, it's made of metal, and installation is easy as well. No glue required, just mount on and used the bolt and screws provided to lock it. It's around $200-$230 on AliExpress and Amazon.

Can someone provide any recommendations? Thanks heaps.

    You need some speed holes

The only people that will recognise your car mods are car enthusiasts.

Car enthusiasts will also identify that the mods are fake as shit.

Up to you though. It's your money Ralph dkwon10.

Like slapping an C63 badge on a C200
Those who know what a C63 will know you're a pleb

      • +2

I disagree. The badge itself definitely makes the car go faster because of the different aerodynamics.

        • What if you drive this will it go faster than EVO?

      • +2

You mean all those plebs that paid thousands more for factory cosmetic trims without the performance … Audi S-Line / BMW M-Sport / AMG-Line / Volkwagen R-Line

        I tell my relatives, 200 > 63s 💁 and s stand for standard edition.

        • Higher number the better 😂

      100% this.

The people who know, know it’s not genuine. The people who don’t know, don’t care.

Better off saving your money for a nicer car down the track.

    • But unsprung weight makes your car go faster and stop harder.

  • I had my brake calipers painted and the painted lasted just fine. If you want it done properly get them powder coated, that's not coming off easily.

    • Unless you work your brakes extremely hard, like engage in serious competitive track racing, paint shouldn't come off. Doubly so if they are powder coated.

I would think the "powder" that would be the problem would be brake dust.

looks more sporty (it's a Elantra sr turbo)

I was trying to think of ways I could make an Elantra look 'more sporty'……
Painted calipers were way down the list, well after things like 'trade it in', 'look the other way' and 'close your eyes as you walk up to it'…

  • +6

why would you wanna waste money on this

  • +5

    Why?

People that don't care about cars won't know the difference.

People that care about cars will laugh at the fake mod.

"Turbo" doesn't mean what it used to anymore. It's not a sporty term when tiny diesel engines are all "turbo-charged" nowadays.

  • +18

    Just saying..

The 0-100km/h time on a Elantra SR Turbo is about 7 seconds. Which is about the same as the 2007 Toyota Tarago people mover.

    • +1

      Beat me to it 😂

      • +7

        😋

Imagine dragging a Tarago and losing! haha

        • Best part is that is faster than most of the V6/I6 Falcons and Commodores.

    • +2

      Ouch!

    • That's faster than last gens RX-8 / 86 / BRZ / MX-5 / Mini Copper S

    • +4

Yeah, but your brake calipers will look great when you cross the line in 2nd pace

    • how much is it to paint calipers on a tarago?

      • those brembos on the tarago cost a bit more than usual because they’re huge (and therefore require more paint and effort).

    • -1

Calling this 200kw $70,000 monster a tarago is like calling an EVO a lancer

Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo and sporty do not go in the same sentence unless it’s ‘I own a Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo, but it isn’t sporty’.

This is a 7.3 second 0-100km/h. Which is laughable by any means of a sports car these days.

The only production sports car that Hyundai makes by any stretch is the i30N and that’s still not even close to a sub 5 second 0-100km/h, of which any sort of big brake kit is still more than pointless unless you tracked it.

    • +1

i30N has fantastic brakes from the factory. Not prone to brake fade.

Also one of the very few car manufacturers which warrants (non timed/competitive) track days.

      • +3

The i30N has average brakes at best, not "fantastic". They're a single piston slider, with albeit a rather large rotor size but they either don't get enough airflow behind standard wheels or the pads cook at too low of a temp. I'm not losing pedal feel, just goes wooden and stays hard, so I reckon it's the pads.

They are slightly better than my 7.5 R was though, but not by any huge margin.

Never had any fade on my IS350 which was a heavier car with more power, and copped much the same treatment.

      • prob doesnt go fast enough to get fade

    • wasnt there a spot version of the excel?

Dont think any mechanical changes were made, just stick on a cheap body kit. They have been fooling people for decades lol

  • +2

My recommendation is that you only draw attention to your brakes with painted calipers, caliper covers etc if you have brakes you actually want to draw people's attentions to. Otherwise, leave them as-is.

Pro-tip: the standard brakes on an Elantra SR Turbo do not fall into the above category.

  • +10

You'll definitely need to invest in upgraded suspension while you're at it so your Elantra can handle all that additional weight from the masses of hoes you're going to be pulling with your painted brake callipers.

    Waste of time and money.

But hey if its good enough for Tesla….

This is so dumb it deserves are reply from chatgpt:

If you're looking to make your car look more sporty, adding brake caliper covers can definitely give it a more aggressive look. While painting the calipers may be cheaper, it's true that the paint may not last as long, especially if you drive your car aggressively.

Metal brake caliper covers, like the ones you're considering, can provide a more durable and long-lasting solution. Plus, they're relatively easy to install and can make a big difference in the appearance of your car.

However, I would caution you to be wary of buying such car accessories from online marketplaces like AliExpress and Amazon. While the prices may seem attractive, the quality of the product may not always be reliable. It's important to do your research and read reviews from previous buyers before making a purchase.

You may also want to consider buying from a reputable automotive parts supplier that specializes in performance parts for your make and model of car. They may have more options available and can provide you with better guidance on selecting the right product for your needs.

Ultimately, it's up to you to weigh the pros and cons and make a decision based on your budget and preferences. Whatever you decide, just be sure to prioritize safety over aesthetics and don't compromise on the quality of the product.

What's Chatgpt's response to 'do I still need contraceptives if I buy covers for my brake calipers'?

      • No, buying covers for your brake calipers will not guarantee or have any influence on whether women will have sex with you. It's important to remember that respect, kindness, and consent are key factors in any sexual relationship. Objectifying women and assuming that they are only interested in material possessions is not a healthy or respectful approach to relationships. Instead of focusing on external factors, it's important to work on building genuine connections with others based on mutual respect, understanding, and shared values.

        • That's a wordy way of saying "Ha! No you won't celibacy boy)"

        • Interesting that chatgpt assumes the questioner is a male rather than possibly being a female asking the question.

          • +1

@Grunntt: It didn't, only you did.

            • @deme:

              It didn't, only you did.

              Yep, fair call.
Maybe I should have said 'assumes you want to have sex with a woman'.

  • I painted mine red because it pairs nicely with the red accents on my ride, up to you if you're going to enjoy it or plan on selling the car on anytime soon.
If it makes you happy that's all that matters, not sure why others are so affected by it, drawing on the argument as to what others might think of it? I don't think that'd be my main consideration but I guess if you're insecure and need validation from the general public I could see why that'd be their first thought.
I'd also ignore the others with two brain cells to rub together comparing LOOKING sportier to legitimately being a performance vehicle, clearly they didn't have the capacity to read your question.
Like ChatGPT said (hehe), its up to you to decide on cost and method as well as if that's where you want to spend the money. Nothing anyone can really give major feedback on…

    • ignore the others with two brain cells to rub together

Is this good or bad? I'm confused.

      • +1

hahahah fair call, should've specified ONLY two

        • +1

          Then I resemble that remark.

  • +4

If you do decide to go with the brake calliper covers, I’d recommend not using super glue to attach them.

    Fluffy dice hanging off mirror.

    • Maybe our Needtopee has some yellow ideas?

  • Nah don't waste your money lol

  • +2

OP, you shouldn't waste your money on caliper paint, it's not enough a statement and it will not get you anywhere. Instead you should put blue neon lights under the entire car.

  • Fake it til you make it OP

  • +1

I heard putting a Chevrolet badge on a Holden makes you look very cool.

  • Only you will know so paint them yourself

  • +2

OP this is your car and your money, if you want to do it go for it. If you think the car will look better for you, sweet.

I had a nice i30 N-Line, with black painted factory mags and black painted brake calipers, and I think it looked way better than the factory look. The looks were for me and I was happy with it.

Also to the people bagging OP for thinking their car is sporty, OP never said that, they said more sporty. The Elantra SR is no race car but it has some nice acceleration, is a bit of fun, and handles great. It's a fun car to drive.

    • it has some nice acceleration, is a bit of fun, and handles great. It's a fun car to drive.

OP likes his car and that’s great, but none of this is true.

      • Well that's your opinion. I've driven my friends Elantra SR quite a few times, plus I had the i30 N line which had the same motor and very similar characteristics, and I find it to be true.

But maybe some point of reference, it is those things for its price of $35k.

Is it a race car, hell no. Is it as fast as the $350k Maserati I drive years ago, bloody hell no. But it is a nice car that is fun for daily driving. Good on fuel too.

      • It’s all objective. Some of the best fun I’ve had driving a car was a 90’s corolla. Underpowered, but fun to drive as you could wrong it’s neck without getting too far over the speed limit.

  • -1

Pretty much just want to change the color of the caliper to make the car looks better, I'm aware that it won't make the car faster haha. Same thing as people blacking out the wheels it's just for the look

  • +1
  • DIY. I painted callipers on my car in my youth. Lasted just fine with heat paint. It was a pretty rough job, but looked fine through the wheel unless you got down on your hands and knees to look at it.

Step one: jack up your car.
Wheel off, give it a scrub and wash, mask up, paint, recoat, remove masking, install wheel.

Do one at a time if you’ve only got the jack that came with the car.

  • As people have said, those who care will know it is fake. Personally I find a kind of ironic mimicry appealing though so I say go for it.

  • Look, unless it's got a 4 port caliper don't even bother. Before this, people look at your car but now after you have a brake paint job that screams look at me I have a small member. It's so not funny. Please leave it alone unless you get a big brake upgrade and bigger wheels. You want to sporty? get a huge spoiler and some decals.

  • In the long run it's cheaper to buy a better car that comes standard with these features.

  • I used to consider the major "look points" but much prefer nice-feeling touch points.
    Wheel, gearknob and pedals.

Saying that, I still fitted 1" larger wheels with grippier tyres cos screw fuel economy.*

*Already traded my cajones driving a 1.3l

  • Ricer boy

  • If this is what you want to do, go for it. Personally I think they look good, but drew the line when my neighbour offered to paint mine - when I had a Mitsubishi 380 VX. He was doing his but he had a Maloo ute so fair enough.

  • reddit.com/r/HailCorporate/ Anyone?

  • Caliper covers would make it slower by added weight, so painting would be the preferred option in my opinion

    • Paint it black for better heat loss, although paint ads weight as well.

  • Make sure you ask them to paint the rotor to match as well. Makes it even more sportier.

  • +1

    Neither. Why bother?

  • I was browsing Facebook Marketplace and saw a guy selling a Merc A200 with AMG upgrades. One of them was 'AMG brakes'… it was the standard single piston calliper painted red with a vinyl AMG logo lmao

  • Think I’m gonna paint my callipers one day. Just adds a little colour to an otherwise white and black car. I painted the rear shocks red before installing them - just because.

  • I painted rear drums red on an HQ Wagon once. Sure it went faster after that. I also had a 179 block bored to 190, Yella Terra stage 3 head, quarter race cam, extractors and a 350 Holley which may have helped as well. Bloody thing used more fuel than the 308 I had.
