  • King size for 279$???

    • +14

The true price, markup on this stuff is amazing

      • +3

It was $299 last year. Single is $149 and everything else is inbetween.

        • Any single this time? I clicked the link, and other options showing under the king are only queen $239, double $199, king single $179

          • +2
            • @ATangk: Thanks, can we still return if we don't like it? A bit a hassle but single probably still doable to bring it back

              • +12

@hanofee: I dont work for aldi but they have 60 days money back guarantee. Though a returned mattress ends up in the trash, probably not the best use of resources for the planet.

                • -7

@ATangk: That's not true. Sometimes those mattresses are sold as new. Maybe not boxed ones but standard do.

                  • +2

                    @cobknob: That seems hella dodgy.
                    Source?

                    • +1

@andresampras: My sister ordered a bed from bedshed and they had delivered a bed that had stains on it wrapped in plastic and all - like it was new. My sister isn't the kind of person you wanna stir trouble with so the business had to come back and pick it up and she got a refund. An insider told me something akin to this as well.

When your a business giving a trial period or a returns window for a tangible product - the product will be scrutinized somewhat and if deemed fit return to the shelf. It happens, I've had my fair share of issues - if you doubt me thats your opinion, I'm just being honest. I'm not here to single out any1 business either 😅

                      • +1

@cobknob: Now that you've related your experience, I have no reason to doubt you. Cheers for that post.

                        • @andresampras: Sometimes I just accept the outcome and keep the item otherwise I'll be forever preoccupied with returns and it can be an inconvenience anyway - big things matter the most.

                  • @cobknob: Aldi might donate returns to charity.

That’s what some of the companies like Emma sleep do as they offer returns within a certain period.

                    • @WhyAmICommenting:

Aldi might donate returns to charity.

Thats the issue there - we don't actually know with certainty

      • I suppose it would need to be, considering how rarely people replace theirs. Businesses would not be sustainable

        • +1

That's why most business models are now "subscription based". 😉😓

        • At $280 actual cost and how few people would bother returning it, I don't think it would be worth their while to repackage. Good luck getting the mattress back in the box.

    • +2

Who has a room big enough for a king size bed these days?

  • +2

Very curious if someone has experience with these. Even just if they are on the firm or soft end compared to other mattresses.

    • +5

Firm end in the middle. Nothing on the side cause it dips lol

    • +1

Think theyre fine. Closer to firm than soft but not a hard bed by any means.

      • Goldilocks will be happy!

    • +5

They are firm. But mine was quite shorter than standard size and stained from factory. So after a bit of back and forth I managed to get aldi to collect it and went into store to get refund.

All mattresses in a box tend to have less support on edges to allow the mattress to be rolled.

      • +2

All mattresses in a box tend to have less support on edges to allow the mattress to be rolled.

My premium and costly queen size mattress I use to sleep on has less edge support than my current (1st) boxed mattress. Surprisingly the non Aldi boxed mattress ($500 - made in Taiwan) has surpassed my expectations. Watch out for the recoil when unboxing!

        • +3

Watch out for the recoil when unboxing!

Lol I just pictured someone opening it up in an elevator

        • +1

Oooh mind sharing what was the brand of your boxed mattress?

          • @mamboism: Englander Montana I think. Will have to verify next time I change sheets. Only had the bed for 2xmonths - need a better pillow though.

        • +1

recoil? Did you cut the vacuum bag it comes in when opening the box or something?

          • @lulzenberg: It was out of the box. Comes wrapped in plastic and resembles a cylinder and you slowly unravel it but when it came to removing the plastic at a crucial point the mattress unfolded and pushed me to the wall a bit lol

            • @cobknob: Ah, fair, for some reason I thought you meant when you opened the box it came in, it just exploded out.

              • @lulzenberg: I was being cautious. First time with a boxed mattress and I had no idea what was gonna happen.

      • +8

Lucky you, I have to stain my own mattresses.

    • +4

We bought one some time ago now in this size, perhaps 4/5 years ago, certainly well before Covid. It's stood up well. We have it a solid plywood base as we found slats just didn't work reliably.

I'd rate it as Medium honestly which is fine for me and I'm a big guy 1.86M and 120 KG. My wife finds it a bit too soft for her liking and bought a firm mattress for the guest room and reckons that's too hard. You can't win. That mattress came rolled up too from memory.

Other suggestion would be an Ikea mattress - good quality and much better value than most out there.

    • +2

Not this one, but another box mattress. It was not as firm as our regular mattress. I guess they need to be a bit softer to compress into a box. Unfurling it was pretty scary, like an airbag going off.

      • Lol , like that airbag comment

    • I have a single and it is soft.

    • I bought four King singles for my kids last year.

They all love them. Nicely comfy top, and good support.

      Zero complaints over here.

But, I haven't spent a night on one myself

    • +1

Don’t quote me on this, but I heard Aldi might change suppliers/manufacturers so things bought it the past could be used as reference, but not necessary will reflect what will be sold next.

    • +2

I've got a queen. Not bad, but it does dip quite a lot on the edges. If you sleep too close to the edge, you may end up falling off lol

    • I found it to be on a softer side and less perky than Koala. I'm happy sleeping on it with my bad back. For this money it's fantastic.

  • is it firm Mattress..No detail showing up on product?

    • They are medium firm(if they haven't changed the product). Rotation and using a protector are essential to get best out of these.
Nice high quality product for the price.

    • We bought a single two hears ago, and its much firmer/supportive compared to the ZZZ Atlier one we have also purchased (which is unbearably soft/unsupportive on the sides).

  • Free shipping ?

    • +2

Pick up from your local aldi store at the 8am rush on saturday morning. Box has wheels but theyre very much a temporary solution

  • +8

I think it's ironic people would spend so little money on a very average mattress considering they spend at least 1/3 of their life on.
    False economy.

    • +3

maybe because if this can last 2-3 yrs, ur already ahead comparing to 1k+ matress that last 5-7 yrs. I know it's bad for the environment, but all matressed eventually will have sagging issue no matter the price

      • Why? There are materials that keep their form for longer.

        • +12

Biggest problem is figuring out which ones those are. You definitely don’t get what you pay for, my 4 year old $250 zzz atelier is holding up better than the $2k one I had from a bed store before it.

          • @freefall101: I guess it also depends on the user because my zzz atelier started sagging like crazy ~2 years in.

            • @ChillBro: Same mine would be just over two years old now and has serious depression on both sides. Only comfy spot is the middle now.

            • +1

@ChillBro: Yeah, I’m guessing quality control wouldn’t be a big part of their budget. Either that or you have a much better sex life than me?

          • @freefall101: Tbf there’s a chance they cost the same to make

        • +3

Bought a $4,000 mattress, was sagging after less than 5 years. I really don't think it's possible to not sag.

Would have been better off buying a new cheap mattress every year and still be ahead, and sleeping a lot better.

      • my $1k king mattress still going strong after 11 years

      • My queen mattress that was around $1500 at Harvey Norman 11 years ago is still firm as (to the point that I often, as a side sleeper, have a sore side from), I'm ~80kg and wife ~50kg, and we don't rotate it as often as we should because the mattress is f'kn heavy and has no straps to pick it up with

    • +4

What about people that use these for a spare room?
I slept on one of last year's ones in a friends spare room recently. I asked where it was from as it felt at least as good as the Koala mattress I spent 5x as much on.

      • Mhm I'm a youngin who be sleeping on the couch lately ,

my back is supported better but my neck is (profanity) from the armrest yet I breathe better than my pillow?

What should I buy I had a box single size before went back to some really really like atleast a decade old quedn size mattress but it's sparingly as hell and the sides r fucd.

        what do?

    • You have three mattress at one time. So you can have different sleep every now and then.

    • +2

      a) Not everyone has a couple of grand to spend on a mattress
      b) I spent ages the other year testing king single mattresses when I upgraded all my kids to them (4 of them), and these ones felt far better than many others I tested that were 2-3 times the cost

      • Interesting

    • +2

I bought a $4k mattress a few years ago due to the same mentality, but it's not any better than the cheap mattress. Never again.

    • I agree it's something I don't mind spending money on, but that is only is valid guideline is more expensive equals better quality. My last 1.5k mattress, with a 10 years warranty, became back pain inducing within 5 years. So that turned out to be false economy ;)

    • Spent $2000 on a Mattress and hated it….

    • +3

The issue is that price alone does not equal quality, comfort or longevity.

I've slept (as a guest) on expensive mattresses that were fantastic, then bought the newest version from the same brand and it was garbage in comparison. It doesn't help that comfort can be a very subjective experience.

Currently the most comfortable mattress I've owned is an eBay cheapy (originally bought for the spare room) that looks very similar to this Aldi model. The more expensive mattress has now been relegated to being a spare. I'm sure there are better mattresses, but for me it's been much better than ones 10x the price.

Realistically the biggest difference between many of the cheap and expensive mattresses is the profit margin. I think when buying cheap the tricky thing is to avoid any models that look decent but use ultra cheap materials that won't last. And probably the best way to do that is to go for a seller that sells in bulk, and makes profit from high volume. One would expect Aldi has decent buyers and quality control, and incentive to not have products that will give a bad name long term.

Or the other option is to go for one of the many Australian companies who get mattresses custom made in China and sell them here. Typically they are still 'cheap' when on sale compared to many mattresses, but certainly much more than these Aldi ones. Their profit margin is likely a lot higher, but a lot of that will go to things like the (up to) year long trial period where you can get a refund if not happy. And 10+ year warranties.

Some of those companies are now starting to offer some more innovative options and mattresses that are more fine tuned to specific types of sleepers, or have adjustable comfort levels.

      • How do I find mattresses? Around $300-750 for a queen size frame, I'm like 95kg 180cm male

        • The particular cheap brand I got a great mattress from is Giselle, via the eBay seller OzPlaza living.

They don't sell the same model anymore, but it was about $300, 5 years ago.

OzPlaza Living is a high volume seller with great feedback. They have been very friendly and helpful when I have had issues with other items bought from them in the past. I am not connected to them in any way, just a happy customer.

They have a huge range of Giselle mattresses. Including ones with better features than what I bought, such as foam edging around the pocket springs for better sidewall support. Really it comes down to what features / firmness you want.

          Link to eBay store.

If I was buying again, I'd probably opt for this one, which is about the most expensive. But still only $377 for a queen. But I have not tried this one, and it also depends on how firm you want it etc. That one is also a very tall mattress - there are others that are more normal height.

Or go for one of the many mattress in a box companies that offer 3 or 4 months trial period with free returns. Eva, Ecosa, Emma, Koala, Noa, Sleep Republic are some of the bigger names from memory. But I am sure there are plenty of others if you Google it.

They are more expensive than eBay mattresses, but often have pretty big sales that make them a lot cheaper. And being able to return the mattress if you are not happy is great.

This is the economy now we have dude.
      Mattress for $300, too expensive.
New iPhone for $1600, I gonna get it once its out.

      • Been around for decades.

Saw people smashing a Thai scuba diving shop over a $3 discount, after an hour of kicking their tires.
"Yeah, whatever, we'll do that price… where should we pick you up from"
        "Hilton, 3 streets away"

  • +1

And don't forget those airbnb/boarding house that will be better off using this type

  • +1

    Ahh the airbnb special.

Well, the nicer ones anyway. The dodgy ones just get an old mattress of facebook marketplace lol.

    • +1

Or the side of the road.

      • That way you can get the bedbugs to help carry it.

  • +1

Very good for young children or guest room. That's it.

  • Interesting.. What kind of vehicle do I need to transport one of these to a home?

    • Something that is long. Suv or something you can fold the pax seat flat

    • We got a queen squeezed into a hatch back once. Definitely a bit tight, but double. Might struggle with a sedan.

    • +5

      Size: 2.03m(L) x 1.82m(W) x 24cm(H)

One that can fit something with these dimensions

      • just the 2m length is relevant for transport.

They haven't provided the box dimensions

        • You’re right I just noticed it wasn’t box dimensions. But I guess it is still true haha

        • +2

The box length is the width of the mattress.

    • wagon / medium hatch / medium SUV or larger

The box is just over 2 metres long.

    • +1

Hatchback with the front seat down. It's not a huge bulky box, just long

    • Ask/pay someone who is also buying one to deliver yours if you can't fit your car. Lot of Aldi customers do that for bulk purchases.

      • do you happen to have the dimension of the box, for the double size ?

        • Box Weight: 36kg
          Size: 1.88m(L)x 1.38m(w) x 24cm(H)

          It's on the catalogue

          • @Sheng: That's the unrolled size. It's not 1.38m wide when it's vacuum packed into a tube

            • @crentist: He asked for the dimensions of the box…

              • @Sheng: and you've given the dimensions of the mattresss…

                • @reloxation: True. I just measured my old single I got last year. 100cm(L) x 40cm(W) x 35cm (H). I would assume it is around 110cm (L) x 45cm (W) x 40cm(H) for a double single. I would assume it just wide and taller. I could fit it laying down on back seats in sedan getting it through the door wells might be a challenge though.

A blog mentioned the Queen was 158 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 32 cm deep.

                  • @Sheng: so its actually roll on the longer side so its shorter in box. good to know. shall be easy to carry in a car then. Thanks!

  • Tempting, been meaning to make a twin-king-single bed for the new place. This will make it a cheaper endeavour hah.

  • one way purchase. I find it very hard someone will return if they're not happy with it.

    • +4

You are under estimating the aldi mob

  • Are these the same mattresses as the ZZZ atlier ones?
Edit: just noticed the pattern is different, so probably not

    • I bought the ZZZ once and they were very very thick and they looked almost weird on the bed.

      • +1

Or your bed frame just wasn't designed for a 34cm mattress.

    • Provided they haven't changed supplier, aldi much better than zzz atliers

  • Anyone found any good quality latex or latex mix ones out there. Happy with our current one but it's getting old >15y

  • anyone know if these hold up if used at an incline?
    (ie 15cm higher at head)
