SONY HTM7 7.2ch Muteki Home Theater System $789 @ Costco

510

After reading the other Costco deal and seeing all the negative votes for lack of pricing, i decided to head down and get a few items priced for the OZBargain community. And this is not a repost, its a stand alone deal that was not in enough detail in the previous costco thread.

The Sony HTM7 system is a pretty big powerful system, 2000watts, 2 Woofers, too many speakers, what else can you want??!?! expected to see it for around $950, but they had it listed for $789

Keep in mind the $65 membership fee, but this makes it still over $100 cheaper than anywhere else($985 shopbot)

a few other items i saw there i got the pricing for, mainly big ticket items

EDIT: as well as the HTM7, these prices are after the costco August discounts. http://cdn.costco.com.au/web/coupons/Costco2012Aug06.pdf

Sony Blu ray player $119
Sony Car Stereo & speakers $89
LG 47' Cinema TV $1799(jb currently $1796 on special)
Asus laptop $999
Asus pad 300 with dock $569(edit)
HP printer $179

other items to note
Samsung 64 inch PS64e8000 $2999
Kitchenaid heavy duty mixer $699
Casio cash register $199
samsung french door fridge/freezer $1599

If this deal is not acceptable then report it, instead of the hate

    Great job thank you :)

  • 2000 WATTTTTTTZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!! haha yep sure.

    • +2

Yeah Ive got the (many years older) 6.2 version that was advertised around the same wattage. It's PMPO.

My rule of thumb, divide by 5 and you get the rough RMS value.
(yeah I'm aware it has no logical basis but it works reasonably well)

Actually maybe that rule needs to be updated to divide by 7.5 :p

How does my old one sound? Good enough. Use it to fill out a room cheaply, you're getting what you pay for.

      • In my experience, it should be divided by 10 or even 11 to get RMS value.
But hey..as you said, there's no logical basis for PMPO. :)

      • They actually advertise 2012W RMS on the box (I owned one set and still have the box)

    • +1

i dont think its pmpo…..normally 2000 pmpo is for tiny systems , this would be 2 million pmpo…dont forget it is 7.2

      • +2

Correct. It is 2000W RMS: http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-m7

        • +1

Yep, 2000W RMS… but at 6 ohms, at a single frequency (1KHz) and with very poor distortion figures. Good bang for buck BUT really nothing special. I don't intend to be a kill-joy but it's best to consider everything before taking the plunge.

        • Always check the little sticker next to the mains input, and remember, you can't get more out than you put in. I have a receiver that draws 2000W, but I think it puts out 130 x 7, so 910W. Now that's believable.

  • Too many speakers? No such thing. That's like having an amp that only goes up to 10. ;-)

  • -2

people will say the sony is all about speakerz and powerz, but for the money. it sounds great.

  • +3

    "Asus touch pad thing $569"

Ay yes, the Asus thing, always wanted one of them.

    • Is the Asus thing better than the Asus thingymebob, perhaps a newer model? Thanks for posting.

      • +4

Fair enough, but watch out for the Asus Wichimajiggy, I heard they're not all that.

        • how does the rehash of the same joke get more votes? slightly better execution

        • that's the key to all good jokes…

        • +1

          …timing

        • -2

          not funny at all.

        • Why did the chicken cross the road?

        • …timing, slightly better execution, and stealing other peoples material.

also, don't forget the rule of 3.

        • Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to the fantastic Costco bargain.

Note - chickens aren't that smart.

32GB Tablet with 3G and Docking Keyboard

      I was being lazy :-(

      • You sure it is 3G,if so great price, bought one for $485 non 3G, damn

  • +1

That will be too loud - I only hope my neighbour does not have a Cosco card!

    • +1

Its not that loud. It's marketing BS. If you tried running it at that 2000W continuously, you'd blow the speakers. Also I expect the sound to distort heinously at high volume.

You dont get 2000w of quality at that price. It's decent value, but make no mistake: it's meant to be a cheap system.

      • just remember, 2000 watts RMS is 2 kW! That's like one of mark taylor's fujitsu air conditioners. Or maybe one of his plasavision tv's

      • -2

They measure the RMS per speaker so it "could" be accurate.

The subs might be 350 each and each of the 7 could be 200? Probably not though.

        • Rather per channel for each speaker.

  • +3

Keep in mind the $65 membership fee, but this makes it still over $100 cheaper than anywhere else

You can cancel your membership and get your $60 fee back, no obligation. ;)

  • +1

    "Total Power Output (1kHz, 6Ohms, 10%THD)"

Laughable. Even no-brand cheap Chinese Amps usually provide figures at 1% THD. These power output figures are overinflated which is normal for Sony marketing for the last 15 years or so. Not sure why they keep trying to pull the wool but anyway just don't believe it.

In saying that though, these ridiculous figures would probably translate to something more around the 50W per channel mark across all frequencies at much more reasonable distortion levels and at 8Ohms… and that IS actually pretty good for the standard lounge room and for that price, just not sure why Sony keep treating consumers like we're idiots :(

All in all this system will do exactly what people who buy it want it to do… make a hell of a noise and p*ss off the neighbours :P Buy it, crank it, then be prepared to buy another system in a couple of years time. Simple.

    • +1

How can "These power output figures are overinflated", but yet still "make a hell of a noise and p*ss off the neighbours". Does that not mean it does what it's suppose to do, be loud hurrr?

BTW those "no-brand cheap Chinese Amps" are actually all the rage these in the world of audiophiles, gives those snake oil European/American brands a serious run for their money.

    • Well depends on which chinese amps you're looking at. A lot of them have unsubstantiated claims of 1% THD. Why? Just because they can. It's like the HID kit that i purchased about 7 years back that was "Made in Germany". My friend purchased it directly from the factory in China. Right.

Obviously if you go for the better chinese stuff like audio-gd etc.. you do get good quality bits and true figures for a fraction of the cost of branded stuff but you do pay a bit more of a "premium", but WYSI-NOT-WYG from the really cheap no brand chinese stuff.

Also. Most consumers are "idiots". 95% of the people whom buy an item like this don't really know what Watts mean much less THD, SNR, etc. Even if they do.. those that buy an item like this DON'T CARE.

Sony is not the only one in the "wattage" race, pretty much most other disposable sound systems or AIO sound systems manufacturers are guilty of that as well.

      • I completely agree with you, but what does it matter if the wattage is in RMS or what have you, these speakers are loud, really loud, not fine music playback good, but it does what it's suppose to especially with a name "muteki" which means invincible in Japanese.

        • Plmko, you don't need much power or quality to make enough 'noise' to p*ss off the neighbours ;) Also, I think you'll find the Chinese 'Audiophile' Amps you're referring to DO actually have brands, it's the 'no-brand' generic badged stuff I was referring to ('Linkman' and the like).

I'm not saying these are bad (I even clicked green on this deal), I'm just sick of how Sony (& others) market their equipment when there's no need to stoop to those tactics. Look at any Receiver/Amp for example, even the $250-$300 cheapies from Denon & Pioneer previously listed on OzBargain. Both give relatively realistic power output ratings across ALL frequencies (not just 1KHz) with good (but not great) THD ratios. Why can't Sony do the same?

Oh, and use the Sony for a few years and see how 'Muteki' it ends up being, I dare you ;)

  • +2

Love Costco!! Renewed my membership today, can tell you it's still only $60 for a household card or $55 for anyone with an ABN.

  • $789 is a more reasonable price compared to $950 because although these speakers are loud, they aren't worth close to the $1000 mark.

  • iv seen it for $799 with the 15% store wide discount they had once… good price dont have costco in SA though

  • +2

Good job O.P.! I feel sorry for the "O.O.P." who copped all those negative votes by posting the catalogue…

    • I feel sorry for this OP, a well-researched bargain offer almost turned into an audiophile forum. I was in Costco at the weekend on someone else's membership - now that's a bargain. Full credit to berger for making a premeditated visit to the store on all OzBargainaholics' behalf

  • Hey man, more details on that asus for 999, is that the ultrabook?

    • Asus
      15.6" notebook with Core i7, 8G RaM, 750GB HDD and 2G Graphics.
      Includes subwoofer.

      It is not an ultrabook..

    Terrible speakers

    • Agree see below

  • "samsung french door fridge/freezer $1599"
Good name for a fridge, it lets you occupy its space without fighting back.

    • its actually a pretty good price. I was fridge shopping earlier in the year (ended up buying a whirlpool double door) but it was more like 2k then

      • -2

Oh come on, no one got that? :(

        • -2

Might have some issues with electrical resistance though!

  • Especially nice to see some prices for a post involving Costco. Thanks for making the effort.

  • Costco also has a warranty policy that made me buy a few electronics from there: They refund (or was it exchange) your item as long as you keep your membership with them.

  • -4

Ok, firstly I got these at JB Hifi for $840 and then sold them on for $777 to some unlucky fella on gumtree.

They are BAD SPEAKERS! (And that's why I sold them!)

So - I'm giving this a neg - 1 because it's more expensive than JB Hifi and 2 because they are really really bad speakers I couldn't believe that my Logitech Z623s were better sounding speakers…

Since then I bought 2 Dali Concepts which own the crap out of these speakers and deliver much smoother lows and highs with enough mid and they pump and do not distort.

    STAY AWAY FROM THESE SPEAKERS!!!

The HTDDW7000 series (previous model) are better sounding speakers (but still sound bad)

    Food for thought.

    • You are comparing Sony to Dali, why not compare BMW with Hyundai? Both do the same job, one still shits over the other. seriously what do you expect? Most people who buy this do it for the bassy boomy music. It's not an audiophile set of speakers. I would not buy this. I have a set of Nakamichi speakers, quite good, but paid heavily.

$840 is a bigger price than $789. JB have them on special at the moment for $1248. If you take into the price the membership it's $849, and if you sigh up to Costco, your not going to just buy this in the year, you will recoup membership costs on other items.

      • That's ok - I'm saying I got them at JB Hifi for $840. I have the receipt as proof. They are bad speakers and you can get them cheaper elsewhere so why bother going to Auburn and paying $849?

They were not bassy or boomy. I am comparing 2 bookshelf Dalis to a 7 speaker system with 2 subs and the little bookshelves demolish them.

        Did you own a set?

I did. Please listen to them and then comment.

  • Thanks for the prices! Does anyone know the model numbers for the Samsung Fridge and KitchenAid Mixer?

  • Hows it going everyone,
This is an absolutely brilliant price for this sound system,
But the thing is I can't decide whether to buy this system or not,
I currently have the Logitech z-5500,
So would buying this system be an upgrade or downgrade?
Thanks waiting for your replies mate :)

    • Downgrade. My Z623s were better. Even my mates who aren't into hifi said so because I threw some parties and they thought nothing of it. The z623s are a new version 2.1 of what you have. Actually the z623s sound better than the new z906 which is the update to your z5500 which actually sounded the best out of the lot even though they are older.

You will be dissapointed - but don't take my word for it… I only owned HTM7 package… It's not like I would really know… Right?

      • Thanks Mr.Michael for your reply since I am looking for a sound system that is under a thousand dollars which will make it so when I go to the toilet makes the water splash up to my balls because there is just too much bass so this is definitely the ideal system for me.

        • A hideously large crap dropped from a metre or so will also displace enough water to drench the testicles.

        • I already knew that but will the bass from the muteki make the water splash up to my balls mate?

  • And also does this coupon apply to the $789?
    http://cdn.costco.com.au/web/coupons/Costco2012Aug06.pdf
    So further off $110?

    • This price is the discounted price, i could not put that link in the URL, will edit my post for clarity.

      • Thanks Mr Goss for your reply :) Are you going to buy this sound system? I am absolutely interested.

  • I have an earlier model of this 7.2 system, and think it is great. I paid a little under $1000, so the price advertised here almost makes me want to buy another for the downstairs area…

Anyway, knowing a little about electronics I had to have a look-see inside the unit, and while I could not vouch for a 2000w continuous rating, I was reasonably impressed with the build quality for consumer gear.

And, actually, I think it sounds good. I only use it in 5.2 myself. (The 7.2 means 2 extra surround speakers, I just haven't got around to putting them up - 5.2 is enough surround to add spook-factor to the good movies.)

    • thanks for your comment now it makes me want to buy this system even more.

      • The earlier systems were better than the latest one. If my comment isn't enough warning - go buy it.

        • Thanks Mr.Michael for your comment I didn't really liked the older muteki systems because they were much more expensive and had a plastic look to it whereas these ones are absolutely brilliant and cheaper

  • what else can you want??!?!

    Quality sound?

  • Some pretty unfortunate comments on here regarding this system.

The Muteki is loud, the sound quality is pretty good for the price and for a Home Theater setup you could do plenty worse. What the Muteki has is good mid range sound and bass (for the price) which is something many 'pretty' HT systems lack - no doubt due to proper speaker cabinet design. Plenty of inputs and plenty of audio options to adjust the sound (factory settings are horrible).

Lets not get caught up on the 2000WRMS figure. My guess is that it does put out a lot of power and screaming through 6ohms those figures pick up quite a few more watts. Watts RMS are fairly meaningless over 50W, go listen in store and decide for yourself.

Don't take my word for it - take your favorite CD or Movie in store and try it out, play with the settings and adjust the sub woofer levels. On paper it should sound crap but in reality it ain't bad and it has plenty of power to fill out a large room or scare the crap out of you in those movie moments.

You can get far superior component systems but I challenge anyone in here to link to one that can be bought together as a set for sub $800. Its a bargain.

    • Hows it going hoxygt,
I am going down to Costco this weekend to give it a try with my Ipod,
I know this is an absolutely brilliant deal for under one grand,
You don't just judge systems by watts you have to try it in store mate,
      I can't wait :) i love bass

  • Well if you love bass this system shakes the gutters in my house!

Seriously though, play around with the settings, the settings are a bit confusing but set aside 20-30 mins and you will be rewarded with far better sound than the crappy factory settings :) Some would say for $1k you could get a nice amp and a couple of floor standers but that wouldn't give you a HT system nor a couple of decent active subs, I've always enjoyed my purchase - one day I'll move up :)

    • Your a top bloke for being very honest i really appreciate it mate,
what sony muteki system do you have mate?
and having the home theatre system already bundled is grouse mate,
we no longer have to worry about selecting the right speakers, amps, ohms, etc…

  • I've got the HTDDW1600. Yeah the HT system together is pretty good, with proper speaker box's you get better mid/ low sound compared to those flat 'sexy' HT systems that go for $500 odd and have pretty tinny sound.

Also with Muteki you get a proper discreet amp, even though the THD figures aren't all that great it sounds fine. What that means is you can easily upgrade the amp or speakers down the track rather than having to throw the whole system aside.

My Muteki really shines when fed a DTS 3/2.1 signal, one of my favorites - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_Faithless_–_The_Greatest_Hits

  • Haha that sony muteki system is soo old and that amp looks absolutely ridiculous,
what i love about sony muteki amps are that they look stunning exactly like pioneer amps,
absolutely brilliant home theatre systems sony has made,
this weekend i am going down to try it at costco you should come along too mate,
i am going to use the sony muteki for my ps3, led 3d tv, PC.

  • Hey folks if you want a reasonable HT system for around this price with floorstanding speakers head to ebay and grab a set of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271028890283.
Grab this AVR it will have more real power than the amp in the Muteki system http://www.rio.com.au/product/0/7/784/pioneer-vsx826/

It's an extra $100 but will be a much better all round system than the Muteki system is.

  • Just bought my HTM7 yesterday from Harvey Norman Bridge Rd on sale for $520 new, down from $1299. For $520 it was a steal, and I'm going halves with my flatmate.

    • Hows it going mate,
Can you please link me to harvey normans HTM7?
cheers mate because i bought mine at costco for $789 and now im shattered that its even cheaper

      • Hi, can't wait to have my HTM7 to be delivered on Saturday.

Harvey Normans didn't advertise the HTM7. I walked in off the street looking for a washing machine and ended up buying this home theatre as well. I had been looking for the HTM7 online for 2 weeks and eventually I was going to pay $985 delivered from Big Brown Box.

At HN the ticket price was $1299 and they had a 60% off sale on it. I asked how many they have in stock and they said 3. I was tempted to buy 2 but that would have been greedy (plus I needed to buy a washing machine). Lucky I bought the washing machine as well because the missus would have been more angry than she already was.

  • Thanks for the reply mate,
Yes I went to my local harvey norman today and they said only bridge road and ringwood had a clearance going on,
Was the $520 muteki BRAND NEW?
because i asked my local harvey norman and they said the $520 muteki were either refurbished, display or damaged,
thanks mate waiting for your reply,
also a heads up the muteki weigh in at 100kg all up! but they hit so hard lol when i have the system on and go for a piss the water splashes up to my balls :P

    • I am certain it is Brand New just that is on clearance -I saw a lot of clearance tickets on many products. I bought the Muteki yesterday 12/8, and they had 2 left at $520.

  • Oh shit :(
did you have to pay shipping for the speakers to be sent to your house on saturday?
or was $520 the total price? i will go down to harvey tomorrow
otherwise i am going to refund the $789 muteki costco and buy the harvey norman $520 muteki.
thanks mate waiting for your reply.

  • Shipping is $55 which is a little bit expensive but I bought a washing machine at the same time as well for combined the delivery. Otherwise I guess you can hire a taxi for $30 depending where you live, or book your own courier to pick up for around $20.

    • Did harvey norman deliver your speakers and washing machine mate?

  • Damn it i lost $269 you got a bargain for $520
