Not a comment on this specific sofa, but we recently bought some Moran dining chairs from Costco thinking they were a bargain and that Moran was a reputable brand. Low and behold the quality was atrocious to the point it felt like you were sitting on the Iron Throne. It was easy to return them, but a couch is obviously a different story!

Well they did shift production to China many years ago…

      • -1

What is it to do with China? There are high quality products made in China.

        • +16

But you can’t deny the fact that Moran’s quality has gone downhill since they ceased production in Australia.

          • +4

@FrugalNotStingy: The business decided that it wanted to outsource its production.

If you're a business, businesses produce what you ask for.

If you contract them and define what you want, like how you expect it to be made, e.g, in Australia, that is what you should expect.

Now that the quality is shit, they've settled for less for more profit.

            • +4

@FIVEDOLLAR: Moran used to be great. Now they are just like any other sofas from cheap furniture stores. Most probably due to cost cutting. China (or any country) made products have different tiers of quality. Possibly Moran spec’ed it low to save costs. Some of their sofas seems to have priced cheaper than years ago too. I would be shocked to see a Moran sofa selling for under $4k 15 years ago.

I honestly won’t spend 10 grand for a Moran sofa like I would have 10-20 years ago. Same thing with Nutuzzi, quality has gone crap.

              • @FrugalNotStingy: Yes, there are certainly quality tiers for any product in China, a product for every price point, even out of the same factories. Our leather plush sofa was made in China and the quality seems pretty high to me.
from the comments here the Moran management did not do themselves a favour.

              • +1

@FrugalNotStingy: My supposedly good quality Australian branded but made in China sofa came with a bent steel frame that shouldn't have been possible assuming it was welded in a jig. It's like they missed a welding 101 lesson and then missed a QC check.

Aren't apple phones also made in china 🤷

        • A phone made by a robot is a lot different to a sofa which has to be made by hand.

          • -2

@abc: Who do you think made the robots?

          • @abc: Yeah, those phones are assembled painstakingly by hand - Don't delude yourself into thinking there aren't thousands of Chinese factory workers putting together your iPhones.

        • +2

Are you people really trying to argue that Chinese built products haven't earned the poor reputation they have? This splitting hairs nonsense about demanded quality vs achievable quality is tedious hand waving to appear enlightened. Its so tiring.

          • +3

@tetsuma: It comes down the the brand behind it - if its a established brand with QA then made in china is fine, if its a random bunch of uppercase letters brand on Amazon its pot luck.

            • @oznik: HEYMIX 'avin' a sale ….

      • +1

You’d have to be a serious Moran to buy one of these couches

  • No mention of warranty on these sofas though.

      • Thanks good to know.

      • +4

10 Years are for frames only. 5 years on INSERTS, 2 years on LEATHER/FABRIC COVERS, 2 years on LEGS.

        • you are right, thanks for clarifying.

        • In direct violation of consumer law. Who reasonably expects a sofa to only last 2 years?

        • 2 years on leather/fabric.

          • +2

@spy: Exactly .. should last much longer

I remember seeing somewhat similar prices for these same lounges a month back. They jacked up the price and put 50% on top of that.

  • if anyone has an account can they please see how much delivery is to postcode 0820 :)

    • It says price includes delivery, even before you put in your address so I assume it's Australia wide.

  • +3

I know that you can get a lot of quality from China, but reviews suggest that Moran quality has substantially dropped since production moved to China. Had been considering these, but can't find any reviews on the specific lounges on sale and not available to check on in store. Thinking it's best to pass, rather than risk getting angry every time you sit on a shitty lounge.

Happy to be corrected by anyone who actually owns one.

  • +1

Same prices as plush which is way better. Only good thing about this, is the lifetime return policy

    • The only annoying thing about Plush (apart from delivery time) is the permanent 50% off sale.

  • +3

3k for a sofa even after discount? No thanks

    • My kind of down to earth ozbargainer! I wouldn't buy their cheapest after the 50% off…. let alone at the "real" price.

  • +1

    These aint very pretty

  • +4

Moran is now owned by a Chinese company. It's not the old Moran from years ago.

  • +3

IKEA is the safest option for me .. at least you know you're getting reasonable and fair value for money .. and great returns

    • +1

This! When deciding on our new sofa the above points you mentioned is exactly why I went with Ikea

    • Each to their own but i find ikea sofas to be terrible and overpriced at the same time. When they were cheap years ago they were an ok option for budget conscious buyers but they are not even that cheap anymore.

      • Maybe not a bargain .. but it should be reasonable value for money .. between the different manufactuers, it's really hard to assess the quality of the materials, fabrics, springs, warranty, etc .., so I have doubts about your assessment of being overpriced against other options.

    • Can Ikea return after 10 years? If not, Costco wins.

I can provide my 2c as I bought a Moran couch from Costco. I was previously looking at couches from all over - Nick Scali, Plush (owned by Nick Scali), Natuzzi, Coco Republic, Freedom and other independents. There are low end couches, mid range (I would say Moran probably falls in upper mid), then some crazy high end italian ones that are like 20k+. All of the above I listed are mid range IMO.

Quality I suspect depends on the exact couch you pick and the leather they use, but the leather on the Moran couch that I picked is pretty good. Especially if you pick the top aniline leathers, you can tell that the quality is actually superior to those that I saw from couches with the same price range from the retailers I saw above. Do some research and look into the different types of leather, then go into retailers and look and feel at the different grades to understand it. Get samples even if you can.

To me the question is - what can you get for the same amount of money? At 50% off, I would say that these are unbeatable. For reference, check at what you can get for the same dollars at other retailers. The major factor to consider is design. Everyone has different tastes and likes so at the end of the day doesn't matter if the leather is top notch but you don't like the looks of it.

    • Thanks for this. Really insightful information.

In the market for a new lounge (2 + 3) as my current one is starting the fail. It's been repadded once and now the stitching and leather is starting to age making repair very costly. It's made in Italy and paid quite a bit about 15-20 years ago from a store that used to import his own stuff from Italy. While the leather is grain is pretty good, the frame itself was pretty sketchy. The timber looked like it was a cut with a bread knife and its was very suspect. Only noticed this when I turned it upside down and removed the black under-fabric to fix a section of panel that had come loose. Anyway, it survived the kids jumping on it so I guess it’s not that bad.

Knowing that most places are making their lounges in Asia I'm relucent to spend too much. Family have told me about leather lounges made in Australia. Places like Harvey Norman sell them and so do others. They seem to all have similar marketing info (warranty, foam used, etc) so I suspect it’s the same manufacturer making them for all stores…thing is, I don't know 'who’s' is making them, and if they are any good.

Like what you did I’m probably going to need to check out all the stores and try and get an understanding of the construction and quality of the grain. If I have to spend the money to get what I want, so be it. But for sure as hell I’m not dropping 20K on a lounge that’s only marginally better then something half that amount, or half that again.

    • +1

I completely disagree, and to rate these as "upper-mid" is a complete fallacy. Take the $3k you'll spend on this junk and go to Nick Scali (which actually currently has a sale on lounges!).

There is no way ANYONE would say Moran is as good Nick Scali.

Thanks for this info - ordered the Carson 3-suite with chaise and it arrived in good time. Everything about it seems to fit the premium category to us

Mr Moran of Moran Melbourne died in 2003 and by 2006 the company was sold to the Chinese. The Chinese then used a fantastic brand name and reputation to sell some pretty ordinary products. Please read reviews of recent "Moran" furniture compared to the original Melbourne made products.

  • +2

Good old brand rep trashed… do not buy Moran now thinking its ANYTHING like it once was. Go sit on this piece of junk in store, its not an exaggeration to compare it to Fantastic Furniture. It truly is cheap crap with a well overinflated price tag.
