  • Ummmm, it seems pretty fuuckin top shelf for a gaming lappy?

  • I bought this recently and it's pretty good. Great keyboard - Cherry MX ULP, fast screen with good colour accuracy, sturdy chassis and good battery life. Downsides are, very large footprint and it needs to be in extreme mode for optimal gaming performance which in turn makes it a bit too loud.

Where's the half terabyte SSD? I don't trust this deal /s

This is one of those machines thats made by a company that shouldnt be making a laptop, with specs and overall design woefully underequipped for what it is designed to do as a 'streamer' laptop with a rrp all too high:

Starting with the specs, the gpu is a 6800m, its a decent laptop gpu based on the 6700xt die, no issues with that -ive used a strix ae for a short period and can say nothing but for the wonderful performance it offers at the price. But it being amd instead of nvidia naturally means you take a hit trying to encode your streams - sure radeon cards encoder got upgrades nowadays, but its not nearly enough compared to nvidia solutions.

And this which brings us to the second point - underpowered cpu for streaming as well, 6900HS isnt even stronger than a 5900HX, because not only is 6000 series a refresh of 5000 series with little performance gains, but also the HS is a 35w tdp cpu used for thin and light (zephyrus series) laptops. If it was alder lake, not only does that have much better multicore performance, for all the apps you will be running while streaming, but intel xe actually offers pretty good h.264 encoding if thats what you are after, neither of which the 6900hs offers.

If the choice of using a HS chip instead of HX is due to thermal concerns, thats even weirder, because this machine is nothing short of a full fledged gaming laptop in terms of how ridiculously big it is, with a vapor chamber as well and it uses a 35w tdp cpu - thats just sad. Back to the dimensions though, this thing is so big, and 2cm isnt extremely thin neither, but it only offers 1 usb a, which means you almost certainly needs to use usb hubs with this thing, and this leads to my last point:

Since this thing is underpowered, its big, not portable and still requires one to at least bring a usb hub to use other peripherals - You would have a far better time buying a normal gaming laptop and buy a streamdeck, offers better streaming & gaming experience at a cheaper price and no less portability, when you factor in everything you need to bring & set up a streaming station with you.

    • All the reviews seem to indicate this laptop was extremely overpriced at it's original RRP so it's no surprise that the price has dropped this far. Even then, don't just focus on the specs. Brrrrt pretty much sums it up. Not to mention the widely report fan noise issue. Spend your money on a better gaming/streaming laptop.

      This from Game Rant

To make matters worse, the Voyager is outmatched by weaker, cheaper hardware and is astoundingly loud even at its “Balanced” fan settings. Corsair is onto something good with the Voyager a1600, but unless users need the extra features or the laptop goes on a deep sale, most customers looking for a high-end gaming laptop can skip the Voyager and find something else or wait for a better iteration.

    • I saw this deal and was hoping you'd post your thoughts on it as I was considering pulling the trigger on this since it fits my budget (2-2.4k) and the spec to my layperson's take seems ok + a few youtube reviewers giving it a pretty solid review.

for the price right now would you say the Legion 5i / 5 pro would be better value for money?

@ChatGPT just posted a deal on the l5p. you wont regret it over this one

ram upgrade here for ~180 for two sticks

        • Yeah that looks like a pretty decent deal. Cheers, think I'll finally pull the trigger on that one

I have this laptop and my real-life experience is nowhere as bad as you make it out to be.

Most reviews are from when this first came out and there's been some of driver updates since which improved many aspects of this laptops. e.g. gpu switching delay etc.

The keyboard and build quality are particularly noteworthy as they're among the best in class.

I would also label this as an 'enthusiast' laptop rather than a run-of-the-mill laptop.

        im sorry but:

best in class build - because razer blades with cnc aluminium dont exist?

best in class keyboard - because no other premium laptops comes with mech keys ever?

for the rrp I wouldnt expect any less than perfect, for which this doesnt really provide. gaming laptops inevitably comes down to being good in one of several things:

        • performance, which the 6900HS and 6800M doesnt provide. corsiar didnt even bother giving us the 6850M xt - mind you that was on legion 7s and m17r5s with a better 6900HX cpu for 3.5 grand in sales

        • portability, if performance is lacklaster, you would expect some portability since its always a tradeoff as performance comes down to the cooling and you cant have good cooling if machine is small - for which this isnt any small in the slightest

        • build, this is fine for the price tag, but nothing out of what should be expected at this price

        • price: yeah not with that rrp. even at this price, its only made up with the ram and ssd, as the specs alone isnt quite worth the pricetag in 2023

Not trying to defend this laptop or anything but your reasoning isn't entirely accurate.

I had the Legion 7i before and this Corsair laptop is a lot thinner. It has a large physical footprint due to the integrated stream deck bar however it's not as beefy as most gaming laptops. Due to the thin form factor I dont think a 165W 6850M XT and a 45W 6900HX would work well in this chassis. Build quality of this is surprisingly solid, feels more robust than a MacBook Pro or Razer Blade which is a weird thing to say. The trackapd is also similar in size to a MacBook Pro 16" which is rare in the Windows world, it probably doesn't matter for most users though.

It's Corsair's first gaming laptop and I think they've done reasonably good job for a first attempt.

    • @Brrrrt you are the Jarrod's Tech of Ozbargain :-)

    • Why do you keep talking about streaming? Not seeing the relevance here.

      • corsair heavily advertised it as a streaming machine with that macro bar, and it being a content creator machine - neither of which this machine is particularly good at.
